Beautiful lakes have begun to appear on the top of the ice. They look like islands of deep blue in an ocean of white. These lakes are called supraglacial or meltwater lakes. Beautiful as the lakes are,the ones scientists studied indicate trouble.Amber Leeson,a scientist with Lancaster University in England, said,“Antarctica has always had supraglacial lakes appearing on the ice during the summer months. But we really weren’t expecting to find lakes as far inland as 20 kilometers.” An ice shelf is a thick floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier(冰川) or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. The lakes form where a glacier or ice sheet reaches a coastline and into the sea.Water from the lakes can drip(滴下) down through the glacier, causing the huge river of ice and snow to weaken. If the lakes form on grounded ice, which is the bit of the ice sheet that sits on the solid rock in the ground, then the water that they contain can drain(排走) away through the ice to the base, which can augment the flow of the ice.If they form on the floating part of the ice, which is where the ice shelf extends over the sea and begins to float on the sea,by repeatedly filling and draining they can actually weaken the ice shelf. And as temperatures rise, the team expects to see more and more lakes appearing on the continent. The scientists fear that meltwater lakes could raise the world’s sea level. 1.What do Leeson’s words indicate? A.The meltwater lakes are too dangerous to approach. B.It’s a slim chance to see so many lakes in Antarctica. C.It’s really difficult to confirm the number of the lakes. D.High temperatures make the furthest inland lakes form. 2.What does the underlined word “augment” in Paragraph 5 mean? A.Increase. B.Show. C.Reach. D.Guarantee. 3.What can meltwater lakes lead to? A.The quick disappearance of a coastline. B.The instability of Antarctica’s ice shelves. C.The increase in the number of ice shelves. D.The decrease in the number of grounded ice. 4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To tell us lakes appear on Antarctica’s ice shelves. B.To tell us the temperatures in Antarctica are changing. C.To tell us meltwater lakes in Antarctica can spell trouble. D.To tell us how the lakes on Antarctica’s ice shelves form. 语篇解读:南极冰架上远到内陆20千米的地方出现了不少美丽的湖泊,然而这美丽的背后隐藏的却是巨大的危机。 答案及剖析: 1.D 推理判断题。根据But we really weren’t expecting to find lakes as far inland as 20 kilometers.可知,高气温导致最远的内陆湖泊形成。 2.A 词义猜测题。根据前文the water that they contain can drain away through the ice to the base可知,冰的流动会加快,故augment与increase意思相近。 3.B 推理判断题。根据第五段中的If they form on the floating part of the ice, which is where the ice shelf extends over the sea and begins to float on the sea,by repeatedly filling and draining they can actually weaken the ice shelf. What is your favourite colour?Do you like yellow, orange or red?1. Do you prefer grey or blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist (悲观主义者).At least, this is what psychologists tell us,and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference,as well as the effect that colours have on human beings.2. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes,or at least as soon as you could see clearly.  3. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one,and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day.  4. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area—until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply.Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.  5. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.  A.On the other hand, black is depressing. B.They tell us,among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite colour as we grow up—we are born with our preference. C.The rooms are painted in different colours as you like. D.If you do,you must be an optimist,a leader,an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. E.Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active.
