Most of us have lost our wallet at some stage in our lives. But few would imagine having it returned after a nearly seven-decade gap. Edward Parker dropped his wallet in 1950 into an inaccessible spot behind a bookshelf, while working as an electrician, repairing World War Two bomb damage in the palace. The wallet stayed there until this year when a builder, doing some restoration work, finally found it.
The wallet is a time capsule(时光胶囊). Its leather and webbing has long ago started to disintegrate. But it contains numerous pictures of family, invoices, receipts, old union cards, results of a chest X-ray (sent to him in 1948, the same year as the NHS was founded), a national service card dated 9 December 1944 and a medical insurance card. His business cards—E Parker, Electrical Contractor—seem almost original. Reflecting the typical methods of contact of the time, they have an address but no telephone number.
A month ago I was speaking a press officer Lambeth Palace and he mentioned that the wallet had just been handed in. We thought it might be nice to try and work out whose it was and give it back to the family. Edward Parker is a pretty common name, but his medical card contained two places of residence—Poets Road and Springdale Road in north London. From this, Islington Council were able to find details of a marriage between Edward Parker and Constance Butler in 1947.
That information was enough to work out that he was still alive and in a care home in Essex, so I went to visit him. Now 89, Edward has dementia (痴呆), but he was clearly happy to get the wallet and in particular, the photographs back. He pointed out pictures of his mother and father, his brother, his cousins and his wife Constance, who was with him when I visited. He hadn't seen a picture of his father since he lost the wallet, Constance, 90, says.
24. It can be inferred that Edward Parker ___________.
A. always lost his wallet B. once participated in World War II
C. once worked as a builder D. once worked as electrical technician

A. The producer of the wallet. B. The material of the wallet.
C. The contents of the wallet. D. The shape of the wallet.
26. What does the underlined word “disintegrate” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Keep B. Damage C. Disappear D. Destroy
27. What plays a key role in returning the wallet?
A. Medical card. B. Business card.
C. Old union card. D. National service card.

It was a winter day; the falling snow blocked out the sun. The wind challenged the car and joined other forces of winter — slippery roads and poor visibility to almost take our little car off course.
“Do you feel safe? Should I turn back?”
“No,” my wife Jennifer replied, “I really want to see this show in Toronto. I have faith in your driving.”
We were coming down the hill on the highway. Suddenly there was a noticeable increase in the force of snow. I felt the car stagger (摇晃)slightly to the left and then to the right. We were in the far left lane; the bus was in the middle. Our little Neon(美国克莱斯勒公司的新型车系) slid into the side of the bus at about midpoint. Suddenly Jennifer was cheek-to-cheek with the side of the bus. She screamed in horror. Bouncing (反弹)off the bus, our car then hit onto the barrier in the middle of the highway. Then from the barrier we rebounded back to the side of the bus. Jennifer screamed and then we were back to the barrier again.
Finally, the bus moved far enough ahead and we just caught the rear bumper (保险杠),which caused the car to spin 180 degrees so we were now facing oncoming traffic. There was nothing I could do but wait to be knocked down. Jennifer whispered, “I guess this is how it feels just before you die. I wonder if it hurts.” In that instant, I heard a voice inside my head. “Relax, let go and everything will be alright.” So I took my hand off the steering wheel, took a deep breath and just sat there.
Thankfully, we somehow ended up on the side of the road facing in the right direction in our now beat-up Neon. Since the car was not completely off the road, I restarted it and moved us safely. We were not hurt at all.

A. She headed for Toronto to hold a show. B. The experience almost frightened her to death.
C. Her cheeks were badly hurt in the accident. D. Her poor driving ability caused the accident.
30. How many times did the car hit the bus?
A. Once B. Twice C. Three times D. Four times
31. What saved the couple from danger?
A. The bus driver’s assistance. B. Their determination to survive.
C. The timely arrival of the police. D. The author’s being calm in danger.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected the next president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope(显微镜).
In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an extremely influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family.
She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.
There’s always going to be articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you.
Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five? If you just want to keep a stable(稳定的) nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right?
There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism(精英主义).They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest(投资)a large amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance. They encourage lifestyle makeovers: wine tasting classes and expensive trips overseas. They make you believe that if you do as they say, you can improve the quality of your life and join the elites (社会精英).
But what’s the downside of being ordinary? Do you really need to go to the gym five days a week unless you are a gym maniac(热衷者)? Do you need to take hundreds of selfies and Photoshop the selected ones to post on WeChat? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to enter high society later?
Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and comfortable life, why bother to chase(追逐)after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.
32. Why does Ivanka become a hit online?
A. She lives such a dream life that a million girls would like to kill her.
B. She together with her family have a lot of investigation(投资).
C. She is a role model frequently seen among ordinary people.
D. She gets what she has through personal efforts despite rich origin.
33. Which of the following are considered as a life belonging to the elites?
①Polish and post carefully- selected selfies on WeChat;
②Break your neck to earn your first pot of gold;
③Spare no effort to improve physical appearance;
④Sign up for wine tasting classes and oversea trips;
A. ①④ B. ②④ C.②③ D. ③④
34. It can be inferred from the text that ____________.
A. Ivanka sleeping five hours a day makes the majority of people guilty.
B. Keeping a stable(稳定的) nine-to- five job will be thought of as a loser.
C. Being elites is believed by more and more people nowadays.
D. Improving the quality of life will promote one’s social status(地位).
35. Which attitude towards life would the writer probably agree with?
A. Life is like a dogsled team. If you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.
B. There is only one success — to be able to spend your life in your own way.
C. Life is not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
D. The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.
第二节( 共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分 )
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence. However, setting goals doesn’t come naturally to your child, so helping him to learn the process should probably be one of your goals.
Explain the word “goal”. Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life. __36__
Listen to your child. Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are. __37__ Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks he needs to improve. If he’s stuck, you can provide some examples of your own personal goals.
Help keep goals achievable. Don’t throw cold water on your child. __38__ For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.
__39__ Help your child write down his goals in an easytofollow form. Being able to see and check off the steps on the way to his goal is key in keeping him motivated. A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级). __40__
A.Change goals every so often.
B.Make a visual goal reminder.
