Woody Guthrie The original folk singer/songwriter, Woody Guthrieset the precedent (先例) for the breadth of issues about what an American folk singer could sing. His lyrics told us about many important issues of his time, and of America in general . They were told in plain and simple language that put what so many people were thinking and feeling into words . Bob Dylan Bob Dylan innovated (革新) the modern music world by including old folk, blues, and other forms of Americana into songs that were both timely and timeless . He was the darling of the folk revivalists in the early 1960s; but after using an electric guitar in his performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, his reputation came under fire from the folkies. It was a small matter , though一Dylan had along career that included music, books, movies, and a radio show . Joni Mitchell The Canadian female singer probably never meant to be as popular as she eventually became . Originally a painter and poet, Mitchell created an incredible career for herself in the late1960s and early 1970s. Her sweet melodies inspired numerous women to enter the folk singer/songwriter community and continue to do so today. Bill Monroe Bill Monroe led the bluegrass movement of the 1950s. Along with his Blue Grass Boys,he set a precedent for all bluegrass ers. He mixed some aesthetics(美学) of country-western music with vocal harmonies , bluegrass instruments, and his high lonesome voice . She published her new book at a tourist spot and received high praise from some important officials . “I hope that through her writing we are able to stimulate the young people in our school systems to read and write more . One of our challenges is reading and writing abilities and it is clear that the talent is there , so it's only a matter of exploring it. I'm very impressed and also grateful to her parents for giving her support in taking this important step of publishing ,”said Jeffrey Lloyd, Minister of Education during a face-to-face conversation. Sierra caught media attention last year after publishing her first book on Amazon . The newest and independently published children 's book Roman and the Pink Flamingos was inspired by Sierra 's three-year-old brother ,Roman. “It's scary(可怕的) to bring something to the public that you 've put a lot of work into and someone could easily damage it and say, ‘It's not good enough .' Luckily,I have my family and others in my corner to meet people in power and I can get positive feedback(反馈) from them, which makes me feel like I'm on the right path,”said Sierra . During the conversation , the Governor General Dame Pindling asked about the book and the creative process involved in bringing works to life . She hoped Sierra would not only write children 's novels but work deeper into the construction of the nation one day, writing down what she observed .“She encouraged me in my creative interest and praised me for being independent in my professional development .I deeply enjoyed our conversation , said Sierra . Sierra wasn't the only one to be visited by the Governor General. 24.What does the underlined word“stimulate”in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Force. B.Warm. C.Allow. C.An interview from another reporter . D.A visit to another person by the Governor General . C You can 't buy your10-year-old daughter a smart phone because you are scared of her becoming a social outcast. Sometimes as the parent, you have to make the hard decisions and be the backbone . But you need to be confident in your decision ,and to do that you have to think it through and discuss it. It's possible for children to have smart phones and not become addicted, which means they can use theirs smartphones reasonably . They can have one and also read a lot and even play outside . It's not black or white. You may ask me what I would do as a parent. I have never been addicted to technology , but I don't refuse it. I haven't and wouldn't buy my daughter a smartphone ,but I have given her my old ones with rules attached . And it's important for parent to understand their children 's phones and how they work. But parental decisions made with no discussion don't harvest respect and understanding , only hostility. And there will be the seeds of anger later . It's interesting that you see the smartphone as more of an issue than social media . I am the opposite. A smartphone can be an amazing tool to help your children communicate with others and discover new things ,but it can also become a tool that brings school life and its problems home .That 's what I would oppose most because we all need switch -off time. Think of some rules for using smartphones , but they need to be discussed and work for you . For example, no phones upstairs, minimal use at home,no social media sites, or only certain , no independent app-buying,etc. A smartphone shouldn't be a byword for“do what you want”. This will be the first of many things your daughter feels passionate(热情的)about and you may not agree with. She needs to listen to you and you also need to listen to her. As an adult, you are in charge and are supposed to build a good relationship with her. And it's your job to take the long view at times when her vision can see only what's right in front of her. 28. As for children's smartphone ownership, many parents_________ A.are confident in their decisions B. have difficulty making a decision C. usually respect their children's ideas D.often ignore their children's requirements 29. What does the author mean by saying“It's not black or white”? A. White or black smartphones are all practical. B. 10-year-old kids can not tell right from wrong. C. Smartphones can be properly owned by children. D. It's unnecessary for children to have smartphones. 30. What can be learned from Paragraph 3? A. The smartphone is an issue rather than social media. B. Rules for using smartphones are useless for chidren. C. Children can use smartphones under certain conditions. D. Children can do everything they want with a smart-phone. 31. How do parents deal with the smartphone issue with children effectively? A. By asking teachers to help persuade their children. B. By communicating with children about their choices. C. By giving children complete freedom to make their own decisions. D. By allowing children to use smartphones and checking their secrets regularly. D People who are able to effectively go through the highs and lows of life have what is called resilience(坚韧) or the ability to effectively recover from adversity(逆境) .Whenever you come across a difficult situation, you have two choices:you can either let your emotions get the best of you and be defeated by fear, or you can uplift yourself from the negative and change pain into possibility . I think life is like a roller-coaster(过山车) ride. Even if you consider yourself to be a happy person, it's unavoidable that you will run into challenges at some point along your journey . Sometimes it isn't until you hit your emotional rock bottom that you are able to develop your resilience . This is how I came to discover my strength . I once survived a deadly car accident that left me with a backbone and brain injury . The doctor told me I may never walk again. At that moment,I just wanted to give up,but I didn't . Regardless of my doctor 's orders, I continued my master 's degree, while lying in bed for 6 months. I was determined to keep feeding my brain with new knowledge . Falling into discouragement wasn't my choice; instead ,I took action to create a new reality for myself and my resilience worked . Now I've become a new self , one that is stronger and wiser. When you unleash your inner power , there is no challenge that you can not conquer . In a study started by Vodafone nearly 100 percent of the participants mentioned resilience as a factor in job success . Numbers don't lie. Resilience is the secret to success .When they get knocked down, they are still able to move forward , meaning that they are able to use life 's greatest adversities as springboards for success . The next time life throws you a curveball (曲线球) ,trust that you are strong enough to stay in the game . Adversity may bend you,but doesn't break you .It doesn't matter how many times you fall;all that matters is that you get up and keep moving forward . In the words of the famous Japanese saying, “Fall seven times, and stand up eight.” 32.Why does the author compare life to a rollercoaster ride? A.He loves riding a roller- coaster . B. Life is full of difficult choices . C.He wants to act as a happy person . D. Life is going with unexpected challenges . 33. The author uses the example of himself to show______ A.how resilience benefitted him B.a master's degree is hard to get C. the doctor’s orders were unreasonable D.how he discovered his lack of knowledge 34. What does the underlined word “unleash” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Ignore. B.Take in. C.Bring out. D.Overcome. 35. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph ? A.Practice makes perfect. B. Failure is the mother of success . C. Avoid falling in the same place . D.Face adversities with confidence . 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Being teenagers isn't easy.36 Luckily, teenagers who want to be responsible can find help in different places.Being a responsible teenager is all about finding who you are and following some simple rules. Here are some tips for you.
