Though most of his life has been limited to a wheel-chair, he has done at least one race a year since 2011. It was about a decade ago that his mother, Jaime, was training for a race in Puerto Rico, and Sebastian asked if he could accompany her. She'd have to push him in the wheelchair because his arm functions are limited, and she was okay with that. However, the race wouldn't allow it. Then, Sebastian's family decided to make a special race for children like Sebastian. The race gives them a chance to prove that despite being told from a young age that they might not be able to do some things in their lives, they can also become what they wish to be in life. Sebastian has run it every year using a special walker. Each year, he tries to outdo his previous goal. Instead of just 5 km in 2020, he wanted to attempt to run 21 km over 30 days. Sebastian's plan is to complete the distance by May 9, accounting for completing 1 km, at most, in a day. Sebastian used to train in a track and field facility close to home, and it's amazing to hear runners telling him things like, "Wow , sometimes I don't have the strength to train but when I see you doing this, I feel that I have no excuse," 62 swimmers are joining Sebastian's challenge this month by swimming 800 meters each one. Sebastian has a saying that your disability is not in your body, but in your mind. It's really powerful. If you promise yourself you'll do something, you can achieve it by using your mind. 4. What is the Rosados' purpose of setting up a special race? A. To collect money for medical research. B. To realize Sebastian's wish to run in a formal race. C. To encourage disabled children to make a difference. D. To allow Sebastian to accompany his mother in races. 5. How does Sebastian run the special race? A. His mother pushes him. B. He runs in a wheelchair. C. He finishes 21 km in one go. D. He runs with special equipment. 6. Which of the following words can best describe Sebastian? A. Humourous. B. Inspiring. C. Helpful. D. Talented. 7. What does Sebastian think of disability? A. There is no disability at all. B. Mind can cure any disability. C. Real disability exists mentally. D. The disability is very powerful. C Crocodiles today look very similar to ones from 200 million years ago. There are also very few species alive today---just 25. Other animals such as lizards(蜥蜴)and birds have achieved a diversity of many thousands of species in the same amount of time or less. Prehistory also saw types of crocodile we don't see today, including giants as big as dinosaurs, plant-eaters, fast runners and snake-like forms that lived in the sea. The rate of their evolution is generally slow, but occasionally they evolve more quickly because the environment has changed. In particular, their evolution speeds up when the climate is warmer, and their body size increases. The body size of crocodiles is important because it interacts with how fast animals grow, how much food they need, how big their populations are and how likely they are to become extinct. The limited diversity of crocodiles and their apparent lack of evolution is a result of a slow evolutionary rate. It seems the crocodiles arrived at a body plan that was very efficient and perfect enough that they didn't need to change it in order to survive. This perfection could be one explanation why crocodiles survived Cretaceous period(白垩纪), in which the dinosaurs died out. Crocodiles generally develop better in warm conditions because they cannot control their body temperature and require warmth from the environment. The climate during the age of dinosaurs was warmer than it is today, and that may explain why there were many more varieties of crocodiles than we see now. Being able to draw energy from the sun means they do not need to eat as much as a warm-blooded animal like a bird or a mammal(哺乳动物). 8. What influenced the evolution of crocodiles most? A. Their number. B. The climate. C. Their habits. D. Food resources. 9. Why did crocodiles go slowly in evolution? A. As a result of their good appetite. B. Because of their perfect body type. C. Owing to so many dinosaurs around. D. Due to their limited ability to reproduce. 10. We can infer from the last paragraph that crocodiles ________. A. are warm-blooded animals B. like cold living conditions C. eat less than mammals D. are fiercer than dinosaurs 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The history of crocodiles, B. Ancient animals' evolution. C. Residents of the Cretaceous period. D. The "stop-start" pattern of crocodiles' evolution. D A researching team analyzed data from long-running studies conducted in Brazil and South Africa to assess whether children exposed to early adversities(逆境), such as extreme poverty, low birth weight, and pre-term birth, could reach their full learning potential by experiencing responsive caregiving and opportunities to learn in their home. They found that early life adversities matter throughout life. Teenagers who had been exposed to multiple adversities early in life had lower IQ scores, were more likely to have difficulties adjusting socially and psychologically, and achieved a lower physical height compared to teenagers exposed to fewer adversities. They also found that being raised in a nurturing(培育)environment could significantly counteract the negative effect of early adversities on IQ and help children achieve their full potential of intelligence. Globally, more than 250 million children younger than 5 years are at risk of not reaching their developmental potential because of adversities that co-occur early in life and worsen with age. In the US, almost one in five children are raised in poverty and 15 percent do not complete high school. Exposing these children to a nurturing environment, whether at home or in daycare or pre-school settings, can lead to cognitive(认知的)benefits that last into teenage and beyond. Parents should provide nurturing environments, which include interacting with young children in a positive way such as reading children's books from the library, singing songs together, and playing games with numbers and letters. Children who join in age-matched housework like picking up toys and clearing the table gain skills and feel good about helping. Get children involved in friendly activities as much as possible rather than park them in front of a screen. Children love to learn and in a nurturing environment, they can grow into teenagers and adults with the abilities to care for themselves, their families, and their communities. 12. What is the purpose of the study? A. To explore the ways of improving children's IQ. B. To discover what adversities children can suffer. C. To compare IQ of children from all over the world. D. To find out how to deal with adversities' effects on IQ. 13. What does the underlined word "counteract" in paragraph 1 mean? A. Weaken. B. Target. C. Enhance. D. Simplify. 14. What does the author advise parents to do with children affected by early adversities? A. Create the best possible living environment. B. Encourage kids to play as much as possible. C. Try to provide a better nurturing environment. D. Teach kids to adjust physically and psychologically. 15. Which is the best title for the text? A. Early Adversities and IQ B. The Best Nurturing Environment C. The Intellectual Potential of Children D.
