In Europe, there is no escape for those who do not appreciate art and architecture(建筑). It is a heaven for people who want to feel like they have been transported to famous historical time periods from America. For me, Europe was a complete contrast from America. London and France had a more royal feel than New York, and Rome felt more ancient. I wasn’t just on a different continent; it felt like I was in a different century.
My parents and I visited London, Paris and Rome this summer in celebration of the end of my high school experience. It was supposed to be a break from a life as busy as a bee in New York, the constant stress, the crowded subway rides, and the weary body that had accompanied me for the last four years. It was an opportunity to appreciate Europe the way I couldn’t do it just by reading history books.
My favourite parts of London were the Tower of London and the Churchill War Rooms. As a site of past executions(刑场), the Tower of London displayed punishing devices from the 16th and 17th century and told stories of various members of the royal family who had ever been imprisoned in the tower, some even imprisoned by their own family members when they were seen as a threat to the crown. Besides that, I also got to see the royal family’s crown jewels, amazingly beautiful.
The Churchill War Rooms, though very different from the Tower of London, were also spellbinding from a historic perspective. I am not a history fan, but I enjoy museums, and I took a fancy to the Churchill Museum inside the War Rooms that detailed the events of Churchill’s life and World War Ⅱ. Everything I saw in it built up his life from his childhood to his last years, creating a three-dimensional Churchill in my mind who was a person just like myself. He longed for more. He made mistakes. He experienced loneliness and sadness. But he had also done some remarkable things like uniting Britain during World War Ⅱ.
Our rewarding trip ended in Rome a couple of days later.

Little boys don’t like reading any more and even little girls don’t enjoy it as much as they once did: this is the accepted wisdom inside the book industry—and in many British families, too. Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and hand-held games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.
Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.
“Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their child is going to read,” said Norris. “It is turning children off.”
The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American booksellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books.
One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a bookseller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks him/her what he/she likes to read, we have found that the child will give an answer he/she thinks his/her parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer he/she would give alone, said Norris.
Norris said, “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If it is children’s favourite book, then let them take it.” “Children,” added Norris, “often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young, which, I think, was totally wrong, and I have never read another Clancy since.”
( )28. What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?
A.Children’s interest in hand-held games.
B.The declining market of the book industry.
C.Parents’ influence on children’s book selection.
D.The growing popularity of online entertainment.
( )29. What do we know about the new study?
A.It is meaningless.
B.It mainly focuses on British families.
C.It is published to improve book sales.
D.It is mainly carried out by Norris.
( )30. What should parents do to help kids get their favourite books at bookstore?
A.Introduce new books regularly.
B.Discuss popular books with their children.
C.Let children choose books for themselves.
D.Often seek expert advice from booksellers.
( )31. What did Norris think of his father’s act?
A.It showed parents’ worries about kids.
B.It made him love reading.
C.It was quite necessary.
D.It was totally wrong.

Germans have a word “wanderlust” which translated into English would be “the desire to wander”. Nowadays the chance to travel is endless. Thanks to cheap air tickets, travelling abroad is very easy and sometimes it’s even cheaper to fly out of the country than to travel within your own. So, yes, travelling is cheap but there have to be other reasons to travel and you’re right—there are plenty!
I have always had this feeling of wanderlust. It started from me wanting to explore my local woods at the back of my garden as a young girl and as I have grown, so has my sense of adventure. And I found my local woods being replaced with the Brazil wetland,Pantanal, where I went last summer in search of jaguars, snakes and crocodiles. The thing with travelling is that it’s always different. Even if you went to the same country, to the same town and stayed in the exact same hotel it would be a completely different experience. The people you meet will be different, and they will tell you their own travelling stories: stories of holiday romance, holiday worries and stories that seem so outrageous that you can hardly believe them until something similar happens to you.
Or maybe the difference is you? Maybe you have changed since last time you were there? And that’s the thing with travelling—it changes you. When you travel you are forced to experience a new culture. Whether it’s eating a guinea pig,or staying with a family where neither of you speak a common language and you have to communicate through hand actions and smiles, the experience gives me itchy feet to do it all again. And although wanderlust is a German word, the English idiom “to have itchy feet” has a similar idea. Someone who has itchy feet needs to leave or travel. This desire to explore is found not only in language but in us.
( )32.According to Paragraph 2,what is the most important part of travelling?
A. You can have different experiences.
B. You can hear many travelling stories.
C. You will experience holiday romance.
D. You are able to take more adventures.
( )33.The underlined word “outrageous” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.
A. interesting B. surprising
C. moving D. disappointing
( )34.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Staying with a family without common languages.
B. Communicating through hand actions and smiles.
C. Eating a guinea pig.
D. Experiencing a different culture.
( )35.The writer wrote the passage in order to .
A. give various reasons for travelling
B. encourage people to travel abroad
C. explain the German word “wanderlust”
D. share his/her travelling experiences
