The loons1.Background knowledgeChanges of Piquettes characterPiquette s FateThe Relation between The loons&Piquettes FateCauses of Piquettes FateConclusion2.The touching story tells of the plight(困境)of Piquette Tonnerre,a Mtis girl who struggled very hard in her life to find a place in the white dominate society.By describing this story, the author Margaret Laurence presented the situation of Indian people in Canada-Background Knowledge3.Marginalized by the white-dominating society.Unable to exist independently in a respectable, decent and dignified way.Impossible to fit into the main currents of culture and difficult to be assimilated comfortably.4.Changes of Piquettes CharacterWhen Piquette was a little girlnot very friendly to the writercold, taciturn, hostile, emotionless her face:stolid and expressionless. She dressed in plain clothes and seemed to be every bit as ordinary as possible.5.Several years laterHer face:animated with extreme happinessPut on make-ups Had a slender body to wear beautiful clothes.Became talkative and outgoing.Dressed well and talked very loudly and joyfully with the boys around her6.Piquette FateAt school,Piquette felt out of place and ill at ease with the white children. When she had grown up she didnt have any chance to improve her life.In fact her situation became more and more messed up.In the end she was killed in a fire.7.The Relation between The loons&Piquettes FateHer death is like the disappearance of the loons on Diamond Lake.Just as the narrators father had predicted, the loons would go away when more cottages were built at the lake with more people moving in.The loons disappeared as nature was ruined by civilization. In a similar way,Piquette and her people failed to find their position in modern society.8.Causes of Piquettes FatePiquette Tonnerre accumulates the society disadvantage of poverty, illness, ethnic discrimination and being female. As for Piquettes character and destiny, external factors play a leading role.9.Three stages of the changes of Piquettes characterAt first, she is frosty and silence. Then she is lovely and rebellious(反叛的),finally she is depressed and pessimistic.10.REASONSThe Tonnerres are ever supposed to get out of their shanty(简陋的小木屋)town where they are always being put down by others.Piquettes mother is driven off by it,leaving Piquette to do all the cooking and cleaning for the family.11.These hardships drive them into a dark hole alcoholism and poverty.People are consistently putting the family down, making false assumption about them,as well as calling them names.12.Her harsh life teaches her to be harsh towards others. The effect of the ignorance and hatred suffered by the Tonnerres totally shape their lives.13.Vanessa tries to understand Piquette.Although Piquette senses this, she refuses to open up to Vanessa by rejecting her friendly acts since Vanessa cant relate to Piquettes suffering even when some of her scars are visible due to her tuberculosis of the bone.14.She has been hurt so many times before, and as a result, she feels she cant trust anyone, anymore. All of Vanessas attempts to win her trust will fail.Like the loons, which sing on only at night,so does Piquette hide her feelings and wishes from others.15.REASONS Finally Piquette attempts to adapt to the dominating lifestyle.By marrying an Englishman with a“classy name”,she feels like her life beginning to fall into place.16.REASONSUnfortunately,her fate is one with that of the loons. Her vision is quickly shattered, but this time with two small children. She soon falls back into her family pattern of drinking and bad behavior, and like the loons, shes snuffed out.17.Even Vanessas mother doesnt respect Piquette,by bringing up unpleasant details even after Piquettes death.“She was up in court a couple of times-drunk and disorderly,of course”By adding“of course”at the end,the readers know that its not an honest mistake that Vanessas mother mentioned all of those sordid(肮脏的,堕落的)details, and it also confirms her attitude toward Piquette. The author accomplishes her intent to allow the readers to understand how cruel the society of the time was towards Piquette and her kind.18.Only years later, after Piquettes death does Vanessa come to understand, although not totally:“Piquette might have been the only one, after all,who had heard the crying of the loons. But again, she doesnt seem to be too sure, and Laurence chooses to use“might”,in order to allow the readers to feel Vanessas dilemma, who unfortunately will never fully understand Piquettes loneliness and sorrow.19.ConclusionPiquette reflects the stereotype of the doomed minority figure. She accumulates an extraordinary number of handicaps, all of which are seen to be indirectly related to her Mtis origins.Piquettes tragedy is that, like the loons, she belongs to a more authentic heritage which has been destroyed.20.Yet,we also see a more tenacious(坚持的,顽强的,固执的)Piquette;in her silence, rejections, and refusals, she is a character who is fighting for her own survival in a world clearly divided along class lines and this tenacity is seen principally in her rejection of Vanessas self-satisfaction and sense of superiority.Piquette seeks to fit into the main currents of culture but is marginalized by the white-determinate society. Its the external causes that determines Piquettes firm character and her tragic lot.21.Thank you!08师范英语A班 张先捷 钟沁 周菁 周蕾 周婷婷 朱丹丹 徐云22.
