(2016·德州一中高三第二次月考)Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31, before All Saints Day. The word “Halloween” is a shortening of All Hallows Evening, also known as Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve.
Traditional activities include trickortreating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “ghost houses” and cutting jackolanterns.
Halloween has its origins in the ancient festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sahwin”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped (重叠) and the dead would come back to life and cause destruction such as sickness or damaged crops.
The festival frequently includes bonfire. It is believed that the fires attract the harmful insects to the area which attract bats to the area to eat them. These are additional features of the history of Halloween.Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to imitate the evil spirits.
Trickortreating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they go on from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as candies with the question, “Trick or treat?” Trickortreating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should buy treat in preparation for trickortreaters.
The history of Halloween has evolved. The activity is popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. Bad trickortreating has started to happen among children in many parts of Europe. In continental Europe, where the commercedriven importation of Halloween is seen with more illegal “tricks” and police warnings have further raised doubt about this game and Halloween in general.

“Made in China” has Changed
Many shoppers in the West still prize labels, boasting (吹嘘) a product was made in Italy without knowing that a growing number of Italian products come from factories that are Chineseowned and staffed. The products which were marked “Made in China” gave the buyer an impression of “low pride and low cost, low technology and development”. The statement used to be true, but now it has changed.
“Made in China” is becoming a leading part in the world market. China’s garment industry (制衣业) has been investing in producing technology and training for decades, and its workforce has collectively gotten better at sewing garments. As a result, the quality of Chinesemade clothes is rising fast. It has been home to a highlyskilled, highlyspecialized garment industry, one that supplies even some highend (高端的) labels and offers the best mix of price, speed, and quality.
“If I was to make a basic men’s jean, I’d make that in Pakistan,” said Edward Hertzman, coowner of the trade publication Sourcing Journal. “If I was going to make a fashionable women’s garment, I would move to China because their skill set is better, their hand is better, their finishing is better, and they can handle that type of fashion.”
Indeed, luxury fashion labels now routinely make things in China. Burberry, Armani, and Prada have all produced things there, because they’re still able to get good workmanship at a relatively low price. Even the Japanese brand Visvim, known for its crazy attention to detail, also produces highend, handmade footwear in China.
Despite the rising wages and costs of doing business in China, companies have not walked away. “China is viewed by people who make buying decisions as unique and hard to copy elsewhere,” says Josh Green, CEO of Panjiva.

(2016·青岛市高三统一质检)A teenager has published a study suggesting the federal government could save millions of dollars a year in printing costs by switching to a thinner font (字体) that uses less ink.
Suvir Mirchandani, 14, who lives in the Township of O’Hara, said he noticed there were plenty of talks at school about saving paper and he wondered about saving ink. Suvir said on Friday that the idea began when he was in middle school and he noticed that some teachers used heavier fonts for printing. He said he was already interested in graphic (印刷的) design and used a software program to estimate how much ink different fonts used.
He expanded the study to look at potential savings by the federal government, and a new essay on his research was published this month in the Journal of Emerging Investigators, a peerreviewed journal designed for creative middle and high school students. He found that the Office of Management and Budget had already estimated that federal agencies would spend about $1.8 billion in printing for this year and that ink was more expensive than paper on a perpage basis.
In his essay, “A Simple Printing Solution to Aid Deficit Reduction”, Suvir analyzed five documents produced by five U.S. government agencies and estimated how much ink would be used with four fonts: Garamond, Verdana, Times New Roman and Century Gothic. The analysis estimated that using 12point Garamond would save most, about 29 percent in ink costs.
Suvir said his school district looked at the idea but hasn’t been able to take the switch. “It didn’t really catch on,” he said. “I understand it’s hard to make the change.”
语篇解读:14岁少年Suvir Mirchandani经过研究发表了文章,建议联邦政府用改变字体的方式减少对油墨的使用以达到节约的目的。

B.By printing on both sides of the paper.
C.By using heavier fonts.
D.By turning to a thinner font.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据文章第一段的“suggesting the federal government could save millions of dollars a year in printing costs by switching to a thinner font (字体) that uses less ink”可知,Suvir认为联邦政府可以通过换用更细的字体达到节约印刷费用的目的,故D项正确。
10.It can be concluded that Suvir’s study is ________.
A.interesting B.popular
C.worthwhile D.unique
解析:选C 推理判断题。文章第三段提到了他的文章发表了,第四段讲述了他的文章中提到利用 12point Garamond将节约大概29%的油墨费用,故C项正确。
11.Which font does Suvir recommend in printing?
A.Garamond. B.Times New Roman.
C.Verdana. D.Century Gothic.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段的最后一句可知,Garamond最节省油墨,Suvir推荐这种字体进行印刷,故A项正确。
12.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.
A.Suvir feels regretful that the school district shows no interest in his idea
B.Suvir is uncertain whether the school district will accept his idea
C.Suvir believes that the school district will agree with him
D.Suvir is unhappy that the school district refused him

(2016·洛阳市高三模拟)Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.
“Shoes convey a thin but useful piece of information about their wearer,” the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. “Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues (非语言暗示) with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”
Medical Daily notes that the detailed personality information detected in the study includes a person’s general age, gender, income, political ideas, and other personality, including someone’s emotional stability.
Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone’s shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study’s participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.
Some of the results were expected: people with higher income most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people.
However, some results are funny and interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “agreeable” people, while ankle boots were more closely aligned_with the “aggressive” personality. The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have the “calm” personality.
The researchers noted that some people would choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality information, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personality.
13.According to Paragraph 2, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The shoes people wear may reflect the information of the wearer.
B.People would always look at strangers’ shoes with a practical purpose.
C.Shoes are so funny and interesting that they attract people’s much attention.
D.People pay attention to shoes in order to know the information of the shoes.
解析:选A 细节理解题。文章第二段的“Shoes convey a thin but useful piece of information about their wearer”告诉我们:鞋子可能传达穿戴者的一些信息,故A项正确。
14.According to the text, the researchers did the study by ________.
A.doing casual interviews
B.carrying out lab experiments
C.analyzing the data from the participants
D.observing the participants
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据文章第四段的最后一句以及第五段可推断出,研究者们是根据分析参与者的资料进行研究的,故C项正确。
15.The underlined part “aligned with” probably means “________”.
A.familiar with B.related to
C.provided with D.devoted to
解析:选B 词义猜测题。根据文章倒数第二段的“’practical and functional’ shoes were generally worn by more ’agreeable’ people, while ankle boots ...’aggressive’ personality”可知,讨人喜欢的人穿实用的鞋子,而有攻击性的人喜欢穿短靴,由此可知be aligned with = be related to,意为“与……有关”。故B项正确。
