the ideology of Communism which values equality, sense of common that everything is own by society.,THREE REASONS,Katherine Anne Porter is a communist in the early 20,th,century because of the Mexican revolution and her inborn passion of rebel. And the Sacco-Vanzetti affair is another cause fired her political indignation in the 1920s.But the failed Mexican revolution and injustice of the Sacco-Vanzetti affair coalesced in Porters mind as the annihilation of her idealistic faith.,Influenced and affected by such, ideology, the heroine created by Porter take no care of her possession, both the tangible(money and property)ones and intangible ones(kinship, friendship, love and happiness of life, etc.),“Let it go”is the only conclusion she made for the unpleasant experiences she came across.,Reason NO.2,Q:Why the heroines name never mentioned?,The three men,The interactions with these three men,Camilo,Roger, and Bill, demonstrate how entangled the protagonist is in the patriarchal world where men are expected and do control the women around them.,These men each have a name unlike the female protagonist who is only referred to as she.,This further establishes the inferred power they possess because a name separates them from anyone else. The unnamed protagonist,on the other hand, could be anyoneshe lacks an identity. The subject“requires a unique identity;however, since the protagonist lacks this quality she is confined to the position of other”.,Supporting Plots,Camilo,by a series of compromises had managed to make effective a fairly complete set of smaller courtesies, ignoring the larger and more troublesome ones(59).,While society expects that women allow men to pay for such things, she feels that this small courtesy masks,Camilos, other, larger actions that control her life.,Supporting Plots,In watching this action, she feels like, she had betrayed him,by seeing, because he would have been humiliated if he thought she even expected him of trying to save his hat.,In this respect, she robs him of his secrethis vanity over his clothing. Her new knowledge gives her power over,Camilo,;however, she does not want this power, she only wanted to pay her fare.In attempting to regain her feminine independence, she,in her opinion, betrays a friend.,Supporting Plots,The more it skids the calmer I feel,so I really must be drunk(60).,While this could simply be inebriation,it also shows some deeper meaning.,Her life keeps deviating from her intentions, like the taxi skidding on the road.,It is important to note that in both of these representations-the changes in her life and the skidding taxi-the protagonist is not the one in control. She allows people to affect her life, just as she is allowing the taxi driver to drive her home.,Supporting Plots,As she reaches her apartment building she runs into, another male friend,Bill, who invites her up for a drink. As they share drinks,Bill laments over his financial hardships caused by his wifes extravagances;,Yet,at the same time he admits that he purchased an extravagant rug that once belonged to Marie Dressier. He claims that with the stain on the corner of the rug,it was a good price. As he is discussing his financial situation, the protagonist knows that she too faces difficulties because she would not receive her pay for a few more days. She knows that she must ask for payment from Bill for the work she performed for him, even if he too does not have much money:Its no time to speak of it,but Ive been hoping you would have by now that fifty dollars you promised for my scene in the third act.Even if it doesnt play. You were to pay me for the work anyhow out of your advance.,Supporting Plots,The protagonist again attempts to take control of her own life, this time more directly than with,Camilo,as she tells Bill that she needs the money owed to her.Yet,the statement is still weak as she begins by saying its no time to speak of it.So when Bill asks her to forget about it as he cannot because of the fix hes in,she replies let it go then.almost in spite of herself“.Here it is evident that she cannot claim a status of subject but must instead remain in a lower status, allowing others to control her.,Reason NO.3,1920-1930 America,Peoples crazy pursuit of material gains.,Two symbols,Purse:money,Hat:fame,LOST,Purse is traditionally even a,metonym, for money.Just like the description in the great Gatsby, the American society then prevailed materialism.,When the purse was stolen, the narrator began to review her past behaviors. She found that materialism is evil and suppress the spiritual. But when she decided to give up the purse, she felt perplexed and aimless. She lost her faith in the society.,With all these beliefs and background of the society interwoven in the protagonists mind, she feel disillusioned, treating life with an“let it go”attitude.,THE OPEN ENDING,Reviewing her life, the heroine realized that it had been her carelessness and indifference that made her lose everything and her“LET IT GO”attitude towards life is more terrible than a theft.“I was right not to be afraid of any theft but myself, who will end by leaving me nothing.”,(,只有我才能够让我自己一无所有),Thank you!,
