A Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn’t easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn’t exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin’s work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer. One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room. Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin. On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was astonished to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He rolled on and on. Suddenly, he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. Down fell the mirror, breaking to pieces. Nobody forgot Merlin’s grand entrance for a long time! 1. The text is mainly about_________. A. a strange man B. an unusual party C. how roller skating began D. how people enjoyed themselves in the 18th century 2. People thought Merlin was a dreamer because he________. A. often gave others surprises B. was a gifted musician C. invented the roller skates D. was full of imagination 3. Merlin put wheels under his shoes in order to_______. A. impress the party guests B. arrive at the party sooner C. test his invention D. show his skill in walking on wheels 4. What is the main point the writer is trying to make in the last paragraph? A. The roller skates needed further improvement. B. The party guests took Merlin for a fool. C. Merlin succeeded beyond expectation. D. Merlin got himself into trouble. B What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, especially the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they bee weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to have no hair. 5. What does the passage mainly tells us? A. Man’s life will be different in the future. B. Future man will look quite different from us. C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes. D. The functions of man’s organs will change. 6. What serves as the evidence that man is changing? A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had. B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner. C. Man’s arms and legs have bee lighter and weaker. D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years. 7. Why does man’s size of the forehead probably change? A. He makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity. B. His brain has grown larger over the past centuries. C. He will use his brain more and more as time goes on. D. The other 80% of his brain will grow in due time. 8. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future? A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful. B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses. C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them. D. He thinks and feels in a different way. C Everyone has got two personalities (性格) —the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control yourself, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by new ideas. You don’t like to make people unhappy, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a person who likes to keep secrets. You worry a lot and you’re always easily being sad. You never want to change your ideas, but you are satisfied with your life the way it is. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. If you sleep on curled up (蜷缩), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and often protect yourself from being hurt, so you are very defensive. You’re shy and you don’t usually like meeting people. You like to be on your own. If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced (平衡的) personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get unhappy. 9. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Two personalities. B. Proper sleeping positions. C. Sleeping positions and personalities. D. Ways to tell your real personalities. 10. According to the text, you naturally show your secret personality when_______. A. you are awake B. you are asleep C. you can’t control your behavior D. you change your sleeping position 11. Tom is used to sleeping on his side. Which of the following can NOT describe him? A. Well-balanced. B. Careful. C. Selfish. D. Anxious sometimes. 12. If you are shy and often defensive, you are used to sleeping _______? A. on your back B. curled up B. on your stomach D. on your side D Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person’s heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal(致命的). It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies. What to do? l If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don’t touch them! l If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock (e.g. a hair dryer), turn off the power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand! l If you can’t turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper. l The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck injuries unless it is absolutely necessary. l It is essential to keep the victim’s body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(恢复呼吸). Keep the victim’s head low until professional help arrives. 13. What kind of passage is it? A. An advertisement. B. When a person has got an electric shock, you should .
