One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he threw the ball at his mother’s favourite vase on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together discreetly and put the vase back to its place.
The mother soon noticed what had happened. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It ran around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, because all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea. Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he decided to keep the lie no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one. The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” The son was surprised. But before he could say anything, the mother continued, “This chocolate is a reward for your ability to repair the vase. Well done!” The mother made no mention of her son’s mistake, giving only encouragement and praise for what he did.
After the incident, life at home was the same as before. The only change was that the boy never lied again.
Whenever he thought of lying, the chocolates would flash before him at once.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (Don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other programs on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes”, but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features. The U.
S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace (更换) the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
38. Which statement about the Kolibree toothbrush is TRUE?
A. It can send information to your phone. B. It can clean teeth all by itself.
C. It looks like a dentist. D. It can talk with us.
39. Why did Serval decide to invent the toothbrush?
A. Because he could score points in games while brushing teeth.
B. Because he wanted to make sure his children could brush teeth well.
C. Because he wanted to replace the brush on the handle with a new one.
D. Because he wanted to invent an electric toothbrush for the market.
40. What can we know from the passage?
A. Only parents care about children’s teeth health.
B. The Kolibree toothbrush has a fixed price.
C. The toothbrush with a camera is already on the market.
