21.(6分)NEW LIFE ON CAMPUS
Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made; your future begins here. However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily confused by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.
The following you may find of use about life on campus:
Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and became familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.
If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer or a computer data book), get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory.
Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kind can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can/can’t you do in your student residence? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?
Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of your bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this—you are paying thousands of dollars for your course. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.
Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do in the future. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices about it.
1、According to the passage, why is it exciting to begin college life?
A.Because you will have more freedom at college.
B.Because you prepare for your future career and life there.
C.Because everything is totally different from what it used to be.

A.should know what they have to fight for on campus
B.are allowed to repeat or replace at least one course

D.dislike to learn from those who went to college before them
3、What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To offer advice on college life.
B.To persuade you to go to college.
C.To explain why college life is exciting
D.To describe the importance of college life.
22.(8分) This is the most exciting kayaking expedition(皮划艇探险)possible for beginner kayakers. You can expect to experience a whole range of different conditions and scenery. This expedition is a total of 8. 27 km in distance and it actually enters the streams in the North of Ubin and exits in the South.
Three and a half kilometers of pure mangroves(红树林), makes this the longest pure mangrove kayaking expedition in Singapore. The distance spent inside the mangrove gives you the maximum opportunity to witness wildlife within the mangrove ecosystem. Come experience the challenge of operating your kayak through the labyrinth(迷宫)of waterways and be amazed at the calm and quiet beauty of the wetlands. This last corner of natural wilderness in Singapore is so inaccessible, that very, very few have ever experienced it-which makes this a truly special program.
Most Recent Traveler Reviews
Traveler A: Traveled from bottom to top of Singapore in rush hour traffic in order to get to Ubin for a 9:30 start—only to find no guide there. Although, once he arrived, the guide was lovely—offering a very knowledgeable tour and lots of enthusiasm around a beautiful part of the world—our 6-hour kayaking trip was actually over before 2:30 pm, despite only hitting the water at 12 noon.
Traveler B: The guides were nice, however the biggest disappointment was the timing. We thought we were going for a 4-hour kayak but were back in 2 hours and that included the prekayak safety talk. The mangroves are lovely but we were told that a storm was near. We felt that there had never been any intention of going out for longer.

23.(8分)Shortly after my fourth birthday, my parents and I arrived from China in Sydney, Australia. It was 1991 and my mother had left behind everything she knew-family, friends and career.
Yet within two years, my parents’ marriage had broken down. After one particularly unpleasant fight, my mother left my father, taking me with her. With no family or friends, and in a country where she couldn’t even communicate, she took me to Chinatown, the only area of Sydney she was familiar with. That night she laid me on a bench in Dixon Street, packing suitcases around us for security. I will never forget the despair in her face that night.
At around 4 am, a group of four young Chinese men noisily exited a club nearby. I remember them falling silent as they saw us. They approached and asked my mother why she was sleeping on the streets with such a young child. My mum burst into tears as she told them our story. Without hesitating, they bundled me up, took our suitcases, and drove us to their students housing.
In the weeks that followed, the men looked after us with a youthful enthusiasm. Being poor students living on their own for the first time, they simply knew how to cook in a clumsy way. However, they insisted that a child should have homemade meals. They quickly adjusted their lives around us, buying fresh food, cooking, teasing me to make me laugh, and advising my mum on how to sort out her life.
Eventually, Mum reconciled (和解) with Dad and we moved back in with him, although they continued to split and make up several times.
Gradually we lost touch with the men as we all moved on. But at every milestone of my life-graduations, entering university, getting a good job-I never forget that all of this was made possible because 22 years ago, a group of complete strangers took us in and shared everything they had to save us from life on the street.
1、Why did Mom and I stay in Dixon Street that night?
A.We were waiting for the Chinese men.
B.Mom knew nobody in Australia at all.
C.It was safe to slay there for night.
D.We had no other place to go.
2、How did the students feel the moment they saw us in the street?
A.Ashamed. B.Shocked.
C.Amused. D.Nervous.
3、What message is conveyed in the passage?
A.There is no perfect husband or wife in marriage.
B.It’s the timely help to someone in need that counts.
C.It’s a great challenge for the Chinese to study abroad.
D.Childhood memory functions to guide present behavior.

25.(10分)In a country where many girls are still discouraged from going to school, Sushma Verma is having anything but a typical childhood.
The 13-year-old girl from a poor family in north India has enrolled in (入学登记) a master’s degree in microbiology, after her father sold his land to pay for some of his daughter’s tuition to help her to be part of India’s growing middle class.
Verma finished high school at 7 and earned an undergraduate degree at age 13 with the encouragement of her uneducated and poor parents. “They allowed me to do what I wanted to do,” Verma said, “I hope that other parents don’t make their children accept their choices.”
Sushma lives with her family in a crowded single-room apartment in Lucknow. Their only income is her father’s daily wage of up to 200 rupees (less than $3. 50) for laboring on construction sites. Their most precious possessions include a study table and a second-hand computer. It is not a great atmosphere for studying, she admitted. But having no television and little else at home has advantages, she said. “There is nothing to do but study.”
Her first choice was to become a doctor, but she cannot take the test to qualify for medical school until she is 18. “So I chose the master’s of science and then I will do a doctor’s degree,” she said.
In another family, Sushma might not have been able to receive higher education. Millions of Indian children are still not enrolled in grade school, and many of them are girls whose parents choose to
