The first alert my husband, Jimmy and I got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The wind began to roar, the bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We need to reach the strongest place—the closet on the first floor, which is wedged underneath a brick staircase. I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I held the banister tightly and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place, with everything rattling and moving. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out and the back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside. By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy’s arm, trying to bring Jimmy with the never-fully-shut door. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay. “Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. The storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured and we didn’t lose any neighbor. 1、The occurrence of the tornado was confirmed through ________. A.some scrolling text B.the local Pensacola Florida station C.a relative D.observing the top of their house 2、Why couldn’t Jimmy get inside? A.Because he had to push his wife. B.Because he has run out of all the strengths. C.Because the door didn’t shut. D.Because the wind was too strong. 3、Which word can best describe the author’s feeling during the tornado? A.grateful B.frightened C.upset D.unexpected 4、What can we infer form the passage? A.The tornadoes took place at midnight. B.People in tornadoes like to lift off their feet in the movie. C.There was a bay in front of the couple’s house. D.The disaster caused property loss but no death. 23.(8分) Have you ever spent an afternoon in the backyard, maybe grilling or enjoying a basketball game, when suddenly you notice that everything goes quiet? There is an old phrase “calm before the storm",often used in a situation—a quiet period just before a great activity or. excitement. According to our own experience, we know there is actually calm before the storm. But what causes this calm? And is it always calm before the storm? Let's hear what scientists have to say.. A period of calm happens in a particular kind of storm, the simplest kind of storm—a single-cell thunderstorm. In this type of thunderstorm, there is usually only one main updraft, which is warm, damp air and drawn from places near the ground. Storms need warm and damp air as fuel, so they typically draw that air in from surrounding environment. Storms can draw in the air that fit their need from all directions—even from the direction in which the storm is traveling. As the warm, damp air is pulled into a storm system, it leaves a low-pressure vacuum(真 空)coming after. The rising air meets the cold dry air that has already existed in the storm clouds, thus the temperature of the warm, damp air drops, and the water vapour(水蒸汽)in it changes into tiny drops that are a precondition of rain. These drops accumulate and build on larger particles like dust, until they grow large enough to form raindrops. This warm, damp air keeps moving upwards, but it becomes cooler and drier during its trip through cloud. When it reaches the top of the cloud, the air gets spit out(被挤出)at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big thunderclouds. From there, the air goes down. Warm and dry air is relatively stable, and once it covers a region, that air, in turn, causes the calm before a storm. Most thunderstorms, though, don't start with calm. That's because most are actually groups of storms with complex wind patterns. There's so much air moving up and down storm groups that the calm before the storm never happens. Instead, before the storm,让 might be really windy! 1、Which best fits the description of a particular kind of storm? A.A thunderstorm with a single shape. B.A thunderstorm without strong winds. C.A storm with air drawn from every directi on. D.A storm fueled by moving air from the ground. 2、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Cold and dry air. B.Warm and dry air. C.Cold and damp air. D.Warm and damp air. 3、Which does the writer most likely agree to? A.Presence of the calm relies on stable air. B.Not all thunderstorms start with the calm. C.The drier the air is, the bigger the storm will be. D.Storm happens without air moving up and down. 4、What is the passage mainly about? A.Causes and effects of a heavy storm. B.A brief description of a peaceful storm. C.A personal experience of a heavy storm. D.An explanation of the calm before a storm. 24.(8分)A European Union program is letting blind people experience famous paintings for the first time. It uses three dimensional (3-D) printing to re-create famous paintings so they can be touched. One painting printed with the new technology is Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss.” It is a popular attraction at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in a field filled with flowers. They are wearing gold robes and have their arms around each other. The man leans down to kiss the woman. Klimt finished the painting in 1908. Until now, people who had trouble seeing could not appreciate the artwork. But thanks to the reproduction they can touch the piece and feel the ridges and depressions. Andreas Reichinger started making 3-D versions of artwork in 2010. He said this reproduction was his most difficult project because the couple’s robes are so detailed. Dominika Raditsch is a blind museum visitor. She touched the reproduction. As she moved her hands around it she said, ”Exactly, can you see these? There are so many details.“ Raditsch said she can imagine what the original painting looks like when she touches the reproduction. “It’s somehow round. You can feel it. It comes with it. And in many places it’s so smooth. And then I think to myself: it probably shines too!” Raditsch said. The Belvedere is not the only museum to have 3-D versions of its artwork. Some of the pieces at the Prado, in Madrid, Spain, have reproductions that can be touched. But the piece in Vienna has one special part: it is made with widely available 3-D printing technology. That means one day, blind art fans anywhere in the world could download the source files and print the reproductions themselves. 1、What is ”The kiss”? A.A European Union project. B.A popular painting. C.A 3-D technology. D.A famous museum. 2、Why did Reichinger say this reproduction was difficult to finish? A.The painting was reproduced detailedly. B.The original artwork was made in 1908. C.Blind art fans can’t download the source. D.The 3-D technology is not available. 3、How did Raditsch feel when she first touched the reproduction? A.Awkward. B.Puzzled. C.Excited. D.Nervous. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.A European Union Program for Museum Visitors B.3-D Printing Lets Blind Experience Famous Painting C.How to Reproduce the World-famous Paintings D.A Special Museum for Art Fans in Vienna, Austria 25.(10分)The Mokoko tribe (部落) lived on the wrong side of the island of two faces. The two sides, separated by a great cliff (悬崖), were like night and day. The good side was watered by rivers and was filled with trees and abundant food, while on the wrong side there was hardly any water or plants, and wild beasts crowded together. The Mokoko had the misfortune of having always lived there, with no way to cross to the other side. Their life was hard and they lived in permanent terror of the beasts. Along the edge of the cliff separating the two sides, a skinny but strong tree grew, with which they could build two poles. There was no doubt that the tribe would choose the great chief and doctor to use the poles. But when the two of them were given their chance to make the jump, they didn’t dare to. They thought that the pole could break or it would not be long enough. They put so much energy into these thoughts that they gave in. But into that tribe were born Nam and Ariki, a pair of young hearts. One day, they decided to take up the poles. Nobody stopped them, but everyone did try to discourage them, trying to present how dangerous the jumping was, using a thousand explanations. “And what if what they say is true?” wondered the young Naru. “Don’t worry. I am a bit scared too, but it doesn’t look so difficult,” replied Ariki, ever determined. “But if it goes wrong, it will be a terrible end,” continued Naru, undecided. “Perhaps the jump will go badly.
