21.(6分) Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international competitions encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred (憎恨). There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident including the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by incidents caused mainly by smaller national contests.
One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were sure that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension (停赛) of the team for at least three years.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).
1、According to the author, recently the Olympic Games have ________.
A.created goodwill between the nations
B.brought about only false national pride
C.showed little international friendship
D.put an end to misunderstanding and hatred

A.The current organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.
B.Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.
C.A game should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.
D.More and more athletes will compete for their own honor
22.(8分)When was the last time you sent a postcard? The UK’s family-owned oldest postcard firm, which has been publishing postcards and calendars since 1880, will close this December. The reason? It says instead of penning a card, people are putting photos up on Facebook or Instagram or using WhatsApp to show friends arid family at home just how much fun they’re having.
If you get a postcard from someone who’s away somewhere, it’s as much the thought that they’ve gone through the hassle(麻烦)of choosing a postcard, working out where to get a stamp from, finding a postbox and then the postcard making that journey through to you. That’s the value of the postcard. But that time has gone.
Brothers Charles and Harry Salmon, the fifth generation of the family to run the firm, said the popularity of social media had had a huge impact on the business. People are also tending to take shorter holidays, meaning they are likely to have arrived home long before their postcards. As a result the business was no longer viable.
“Increasingly challenging trading conditions and changes to the nature and size of the market for its publications have resulted in uncertainty over the future of its trade,” the brothers wrote in a letter to suppliers and newsagents.
As a result they were announcing a proposal to withdraw from publishing. The number of postcards sold each year is reported to have seen a sharp decline to about five million from 20 million just 25 years ago. But the firm said that as well as the drop in the number of postcards sent. “we have also had to consider that there are no more members of the family who wish to join the business."

23.(8分) Babbage, born in London in 1791, was a great mathematical genius. He was a natural inventor.
When he finished school, he went to study mathematics at Cambridge University. Later, he got a job teaching at the university. While working there, he designed his “first difference engine”. This was, basically, a hand-operated mechanical calculator.
He took nine years to build a part of the machine. This machine can make complex mathematical calculations. It’s a basic mechanical computer.
Babbage dreamed, however, of more complicated machines. In fact, he didn’t only dream; he began to design them. The result was a series of “analytical engines” which were in fact powerful computers!
His designs contained processors, control units, a memory, and an input/output system. These are the four essential parts of a modern mathematical computer!
Alas! His “second difference engine” couldn’t use electricity since this hadn’t yet become a usable source of power, so Babbage had to make do with mechanical systems. For this reason, the machine was big, complicated and expensive. Though Babbage produced complete plans for the machine, he couldn’t build it. It was too advanced for its age!
It was not until almost 160 years later that Babbage’s “second difference engine” was finally manufactured. The first working version of this machine was built by the Science Museum in London, for the Babbage bicentenary in 1991. A second machine was then built for an American high-tech millionaire, who put it in the Computer History Museum, in California.
Babbage’s analytical engines would have used “programs” like those used in the textile(纺织)industry to make complicated patterns, but they were never built. This brilliant mathematician really was too far ahead of his time!
1、Where did Babbage plan his “first difference engine”?
A.In London
B.At high school
C.At Cambridge
D.In Science Museum
2、What do we know about his “second difference engine”?
A.It took him nine years to build it
B.It was far ahead of its time
C.Its deign came out in his dreams
D.Its power source was electricity
3、The “second difference engine” was built to work in 1991 ____________.
A.for an American millionaire
B.in memory of Babbage
C.to test its ability to use electricity
D.for textile industry to make patterns
4、What can we infer from the text?
A.Babbage’s engines didn’t run on programs
B.Textile patterns are produced with programs
C.Babbage can be seen as the father of computers
D.Babbage’s analytical engines were never built
24.(8分)Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not strong and healthy under sunlight, and require frequent re-check and lots of relatively fixed setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To ease the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, stable, hand-held and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids (格) the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence computational procedure is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.
1、Who will benefit from the newly-developed App?
A.ALS victims.
B.people with eye disabilities.
C.smartphone addicts.
D.technology researchers.
2、What are not the basic elements used in the App?
A.Artificial intelligence.
B.A smart phone’s camera.
C.User’s eye movements.
D.Hand-written letters.
3、What did the researchers do to improve the current eye-tracking input systems?
A.To check the eye signals twice to make it fixed.
B.To create a stable and convenient eye-gesture communication system.
C.To point the smartphone at the speaker.
D.To look up, down, left or right.
25.(10分)Many people may have watched the film “March of the Penguins”, which shows a real group of birds in Antarctica. Imagine a group of fat black and white birds walking in a line. Suddenly, one penguin loses his balance and falls on the ice. Every time penguins fall down, people laugh. The animals are cute!
People like the film very much. So much, in fact, that police in England think that it may be the reason behind a crime. A man went to a zoo in London and stole a baby penguin. Authorities think that the man stole the penguin after seeing the film and believe he wanted to give it away as a Christmas gift.
Michael Gauthier-Clerc, an expert studying penguins, thinks that many people like penguins but some people do not understand them. He told The New York Times newspaper, “People love the penguin’s colors, its way of standing straight upright and the way it walks.”
These things make penguins seem cute to people, but there are good reasons for all of these things. For example, penguins move from side to side when they walk and may seem to be out of balance. But Doctor Gauthier-Clerc says that the penguins waddle to save energy. The penguin’s colour also has a special purpose. It protects the penguins when they are swimming. From below, larger animals cannot see the penguin’s white underside because it looks the same as the bright sky or ice. And from above, other animals cannot see the penguin’s black back against the dark ocean floor.
The penguins’ colors protect them in nature. But scientists have found that some of these physical details also have an effect on humans. They make animals seem cute to people. Scientists believe that humans are very sensitive to things that are cute, such as human baby and even objects that may look like parts of a baby.
Recent studies show that cute images affect the brain in a special way. A study done at the University of Michigan tested young people’s reactions to images. It found that young people believed a message more if the message
