21.(6分) Solar energy systems/power plants do not produce air pollution, water pollution, or greenhouse gases. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment, when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment.
However, some poisonous materials and chemicals are used to make the photovoltaic (光电池的) cells that convert sunlight into electricity. Some solar thermal (保热的) systems use potentially hazardous liquids to transfer heat. Leaks of these materials could be harmful to the environment. U. S. environmental laws regulate the use and settlement of these types of materials.
As with any type of power plant, large solar power plants can affect the environment near their locations. The placement of the power plant may have long-term effects on the habitats of native plants and animals. Some solar power plant-s may require water for cleaning solar collectors and concentrators or for cooling turbine generators. Using large volumes of ground water or surface water in some dry locations may affect the ecosystems that depend on these water resources. In addition, the beam of concentrated sunlight a solar power tower creates can kill birds and insects that fly into the beam.
The amount of solar energy that the earth receives each day is many times greater than the total amount of all energy that people consume each day. However, on the sur~ace of the earth, solar energy is a variable and irregular energy source. The amount of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight varies by time of day and location. Weather and climate conditions affect the availability of sunlight daily and on a seasonal basis. The type and size of a soIar energy collection and conversion system determines how much of the available solar energy we can convert into useful energy.
1、Which of the following best explains "hazardous" underlined in paragraph 2?
A.inexpensive B.dangerous
C.ineffective D.abnormal
2、What influence can large solar power plants have on the locations?
A.Polluting the ground water.
B.Protecting the habitats of plants and animals.
C.Damaging the local natural balance.
D.Attracting birds and insects to the area.
3、What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Different areas receive different amount of solar energy.
B.How to convert solar energy into useful energy.
C.The relationship between solar energy collection and the sunlight.
D.Some factors that influence the amount of solar energy collection.
4、What does the author think of the solar energy systems?
A.They are totally environment-friendly.
B.They have both advantages and disadvantages.
C.They should be forbidden in the future.
D.They shouId be encouraged in quantities.
22.(8分) On September 10, 2018, Jack Ma, founder and chairman of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, announced his successor(继任者)at the company he founded 19 years ago. Surprisingly, in a country where 70 to 80 percent of private companies are still family run, Mr. Ma did not name a family member. Rather, one of the world’s largest e-commerce companies will be led by Daniel Zhang, an 11-year Alibaba old hand chosen only for his “professional talent.”
The history of many countries can be marked by a trend away from dependence on family succession in business, or the belief that qualities of leadership flow through bloodlines. Ma is a true innovator(创新者)in many ways, most famously for building an innovative online shopping market worth more than the economies of most countries. But his legacy(遗产)may lie in showing how China as well as much of Asia can produce founders of successful organizations unwilling to pass the torch to relatives.
“Alibaba was never about Jack Ma,” he stated in announcing his succession plan. Instead, the former schoolteacher who came from lowly origins is stepping back from day-to-day operations because he has built a system that takes root in a company culture based on innovation, transparency, and responsibility. “For the last 10 years, we kept working on these ingredients,” he stated.
The company’s future will depend on developing a wealth of talent that drives innovation, he said. And in a society with a long tradition of cautious distrust toward those outside the family circle, Ma has built an “architecture of trust” with customers, who number over half a billion. Chinese now readily rely on Alibaba’s online payment system, its ratings of products and services, and other trust-building systems or methods pioneered by the company.
China’s rapid growth now produces a new billionaire almost every day. Many of them, like Ma, have favored systems of management based on talent and honesty. As many countries have discovered as they progress, it is better to swim in a talent pool, not a gene(基因)pool.
1、What do we know about Daniel Zhang from the passage?
A.He’s a talented professor.
B.He’s an experienced manager.
C.He’s a successful founder.
D.He’s Chairman of Alibaba.
2、Where does Ma’s legacy lie in?
A.Becoming a successful innovative founder.
B.Casting doubt on traditional succession plan.
C.Providing creative answers to succession problems.
D.Representing trends towards non-family-run companies.
3、What seems to be the recipe for the company’s future success?
A.Trust-building methods.
B.The “architecture of trust”.
C.A culture of talent development.
D.The latest successful innovations.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Prefer Qualities to Blood.
B.Train a Potential Successor.
C.Favor Genes over Talents.
D.Provide New Management.
23.(8分) Connecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology. Tasks that once required a postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on your screen, and you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught up in a dilemma by violating certain new rules for communicating. A big one for some: Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call. But that’s just the beginning.
“I’m usually pretty mild and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle, a 29-year-old office manager from White Plains, New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message — “K.” “At the very least reply with, Got it.” he said “At least give me a few words here. You’re not that busy.”
There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of others who have taken Lo social media to express their distaste for people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.
“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James Ivory, professor of communication a Virginia Tech. In the same way that generations and small groups of friends have their own slang and customs, internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings that have their own unique set of routine.
But not everyone gets the point. Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (线索、迹象) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.
“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness of the body language,” Ivory said, “People immediately fill that gap by using emoji (表情符号) to sum up a feeling in seconds.
“There's great potential for danger,” Ivory warned. “What's considered polite in one form might be inappropriate or rude in another occasion.”
1、What can you infer about Mark from Paragraph 2?
A.He is a businessman with a bad temper.
B.He complains about social manners.
C.He can’t bear one- word messages.
D.He dislike a busy business life.
2、According to the text, which of the following breaks the rules for communicating?
A.John says “I got it.” to his boss face to face.
B.Jim calls Bill without confirming in advance.
C.Mary texts Lily to make sure if she can call her.
D.Jack sends “Thanks a lot” to his business friends.
3、Why may people misunderstand each other during digital communication?
A.Emoji cannot sum up feelings.
B.People use their own slang and customs.
C.There are large quantities of written rules.
D.People gets wrong messages without clear clues.
4、What are people expected to do after reading tie passage?
A.To obey their own digital communication rules.
B.To be aware of rules during digital communication.
C.To use advancing technology even with disadvantages.
D.To keep pace with digital communication development.
24.(8分)A new study shows that rising levels of planet-warming gases may reduce important nutrients(营养物质)in food crops
Researchers studied the effects of carbon dioxide on rice, In the experiment, scientists grew 18 kinds of rice in fields in China and Japan. They set carbon dioxide levels to what scientists are predicting for our planet by the end of the century.Rice grown under high carbon dioxide conditions had,on average,13 t0 30 percent lower levels of four B vitamins and 10 percent less protein(蛋白质)The crops also had 8 percent less iron and 5 percent less zinc than rice grown under normal conditions However, vitamin E leveLs increased by about 13 percent on average.
The researchers said the effects of planet-warming gases would be most sevcre for the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries. These people generally eat the most rice and have the least complex diets. That includes abour 600 million people in Indonesia, Cambodia,Myanmar,Bangladesh,Laos and other nations, mainly in Southeast Asia.
Other studies have shown that higher temperatures from climate change and weather extremes will reduce food production. But scientists are finding that rising levcls of carbon dioxide and other planet-warming gases threaten food quality.
Earlier studies showed that wheat, rice, field peas and soybeans grown under high carbon dioxide conditions all had Iower levels of protein and mincrais.Scientists predicted that almost 150 million people might be at risk of having too little protein or zinc in their diet by 2050.
The new study suggests a way to lower the nutritional harm of climate change. That is to grow different forms of rice that can adapt to higher carbon dioxide levels.
1、Growing rice under high carbon dioxide conditions may____.
A.increase iron in the rice
B.make it less nutritious
C.cause losses of Vitamin E
D.make it more delicious
2、How can people reduce the nutritional harm of climate change?
A.By importing rice from China and Japan.
B.By taking other kinds of food instead of rice.
C.By avoiding eating rice from Southeast Asia.
D.By growing rice suitable for the environment.
3、What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To infom readers what nurrients food crops contain.
B.To call on people to care for the planet they live on.
C.To share the results of some studies on people’s diets.
D.To tell readers where food crops are mainly produced.
4、In which part of a magazine can you read the text?
A.Advertisements. B.Arts and culture.
