The man was Jack Ma (Ma Yun) . Later that year, he set up Alibaba, which would become China’s largest e-commerce (电子商业) company.
After 15 years, Alibaba went public - selling shares (股份) of a private company to new investors(投资者) - on Sept 19. The 50-year-old became Chinese mainland’s richest man with a fortune of 150 billion yuan.

Of course we made many mistakes, but we never gave up hope.” Ma said.
Ma’s business is not only focused on e-commerce. Alibaba has a large stake(股份) in Sina Weibo and Youku Tudou. He’s also on the board of China’s most successful soccer club, Guangzhou Evergrande.

To many students, joining social media (社交媒体) is more important than making new friends in real life.
And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download apps such as Sina Weibo, WeChat(微信) and QQ.
“I love checking my friends’ updates(更新). I also enjoy sharing news on social media,” said Wu Wei, 14, from Hongling Middle School in Shenzhen. Because of enjoying these, Wu distance himself from real life. “I love playing games on WeChat, but have no interest in playing with my classmates,” said Wu.
Deng Yunyun, 14, from Jianfeng Middle School in Shanghai, said that social media had influenced their life. Recently his school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg. Instead of giving him some help, students were busy updating micro blogs about the accident.
What makes parents and teachers worried is safety. “Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media‘friends’. Such information could bring them danger.” said Han Songjun, a teacher at Hongling Middle School.
For example, WeChat’s shake-shake function allows users to connect to other users close by. But the police warn about the danger of making friends in this way.

He was an old man who fished alone in a small boat on the sea and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone with another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty. The sail looked like the flag of failure forever.
The old man was thin with deep wrinkles (皱纹) in the back of his neck. His face was terribly brown because of the strong sunlight on the sea every day and his hands had the deep scars (伤疤) from dealing with heavy fish on the lines. But none of these scars were fresh. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from the sea. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.”
The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.
“No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.”
“But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.”
“I remember,” the old man said.
“It was papa who made me leave. I am a boy and I must follow him.”
“I know,” the old man said. “It is quite normal.”
“He hasn’t much faith (信心).”

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied
shyness in different countries. They found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget---if you are shy, you are not the only one.
( )42. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Most little babies are born shy and quiet. B. If you are shy now, you will be shy forever.
C. Many shy children have older brothers and sisters. D. Most Israeli people are shy of expressing opinions.

A. genetics, grown--ups and birthplace B. genetics, family size and birthplace
C. family size, grown--ups and failure D. genetics, family size and freedom
