How to improve oral English as a college student

Ⅰ.The importance of oral English
1. As far as we are concerned, English is widely used by most of people in the world .Nowadays, with the development of economic globalization, English, as an international communication tool, plays a more important role in our lives. In our life, the commodity we bought, the 3c products we used……too many things around are attached English introduction. So, English is playing a more and more important role in people’s life. 2. In human society we know of, speech precedes writing. Before we write something, we always are occurred that how we express it in spoken language. For example, the young child don’ know how to write, but he know how to say it. The spoken language is used for a wider range of purpose than the written, and carriers a larger load of communication than the written. So, spoken English is necessary.
3. Nowadays, international exchanges are no longer limited to reading and written form. But with the deepening of reform and opening up, especially economic and trade ties have been enhanced. We have chances to communicate with foreign friends face to face. Especially in business negotiations, in order to have a happy and successful negotiation, we have to be a master of English speaking, or our negotiation will become a failure .So from the point of this view, if we want to meet the social and economic development needs, learning oral English well is our first choice. And in everyday life, more and more people travel and study abroad, to make our life more convenient and well-off, we should improve our oral English. As a university student, we should be well-informed with international news, so we should improve our spoken English.
Ⅱ. The current situation of Chinese student’s spoken English
In our country, there are many college students who cannot speak English after having learned English for a long time. That is to say, their English is “dumb English”. The primary reasons are below:
1. Lack of language environment 
The most Chinese student use English only in the class. They don’t have English environment. In the class they spend the most time in writing their notes and listening teachers speak. After class they don’t speak English any more. So, they have little time to improve their oral English.
2. The negative impact of the current testing system
For the Chinese exam-oriented education, teachers ignore what won’t present in the exam. In most area, the spoken English and English listening is not the indispensable part. So, the current testing system affects the study of spoken English.
3. The students’ psychological barrier 
Most of students are often reluctant to express themselves in English. Because they are afraid of making mistakes, fear of criticism and losing face. Because their vocabulary and sentence patterns are limited, they often have nothing to say in English. Day after day, they become more and more silent. What’s worse, they do not dare to say English and they lack of the sense of English speaking ability. With the increasing difficulty of English, they are more reluctant to speak.
Ⅲ. Ways to improve students’ spoken English
1. Forget the fear
The main problem with most students who find it difficult to speak English well is that they lack confidence and they have a fear that they might go wrong and will be laughed at. But if you do not start practicing English communication how would you know where you are going wrong and where you need to improve. We all make mistakes and the only way to learn is to practice and have others correct us.
2. Think in English
When communicating in English language, many students tend to think in their mother tongue and speak in English. If you wish to improve your communication in English then first you need to start thinking in English. Doing like this reduce the effects that from translation. For the first time, maybe you will find that it’s hard to not to think in your mother tongue. But as soon as you are used to this, it’s save much time.
3. Create an English environment ourselves 
You can find a topic, give some limit to yourself and keep time. Then you can speak English facing mirror. You don’t need to be shy and worried about mistakes. There is all yourself. Not only you can improve oral English, but also you will shape your faith.
4. Use some words, and sentence pattern in your speech by purpose
Chinese students separate the speaking from writing. They can write the complicated words and sentences. But they always use the simple words and sentences in speech. So, if you can use the words and sentences new learned by purpose, you will combine your English writing and speaking.
5. Find your partner
If you can find a native speaker as your long-term partner, it’s for the best. But most of our college students haven’t such a person. We can turn to our friends. Try and find a friend who is also interested in improving English so that you can practice together, correct each other and learn together.
6. Use the media
Read English books, newspapers and magazines. Watch English news, TV shows, movies, preferably with subtitles. The more you hear the more exposure you get to new words to add on to your vocabulary and you get more familiar to the pronunciation and intonation of different words. Record your own voice and listen to it. This will help you gain confidence and work on your mistakes.

We all know that English is an international language. It is the most widely studied language in areas where it is not native. The use of English is widespread in international trade. Now that we have realized the importance of English, we should do our best to improve our English, especially spoken English.
