the same academic topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.,11,Sample,Reading,12,Role distancing,People play many different roles all through their lives, such as sons, husbands and fathers. However, under certain circumstances, people may want to adapt to new social roles rather than keep the roles they are currently playing. In the field of social-psychology,this interesting conflict between roles people wish for and roles people possess is called“role distancing”.,13,Only in very rare cases, people would express their reluctance to play current social roles directly.Normally, they would still keep playing the roles bestowed by their surrounding environments on one hand, but on the other hand, they would release some emotional clues that imply their unwillingness to accept the roles.,14,Role distancing,(what to read?),People, play many different roles, all through their lives, such to a lecture on this topic in a psychology class.,19,20,That is the definition of the phenomenon which we call,er“Role Distancing”.To help you understand this phenomenon better, here is an,example,.,Suppose you were a,13-year-old boy,and you were playing with your friends in the living room. Now your mom came in and asked you to finish your kitchen duty, that is,to,wash dishes, piled up in the sink.,What to listen?,21,What did you feel then? You knew that you should obey your moms words and do the dishes. But you felt you were an adult already and thus it was so“uncool”if you did what your mom asked you, especially in front of your friends. So what would you do?,22,You still had to wash the dishes for sure, but you did not want your friends thinking that you were a nice, good kid. Then you, walked into the kitchen slowly,or you, dragged yourself out of,the living room,so that all your friends would know that you were, unwilling to accept your social role as a kid anymore,.,23,Sample notes,13 male, wash dishes, walked into the kitchen slowly, unwilling to accept his social role as a kid anymore,24,Sample pattern 1,The reading passage explain,s,/give,s,a definition of _.It state,s,that _.,In the listening passage, the professor take,s,_ for example to,further illustrate this,._.,By these means,he proves that,_,which is related in the reading passage.,25,Sample pattern 2,The reading passage explain,s,a definition of_,which means that_.,In the lecture, the professor give,s,two examples to,reinforce the theory,.The first one is that,_.,The other one is that,_.,And these are the two examples the professor present,s,to explain,(,定义,),which is described in the reading passage.,26,The question will then appear on your computer screen and will also be read by the narrator.,The professor takes one example to illustrate the phenomenon of“Role Distancing”.Explain how this example is related to the reading passage.,preparation time:30 seconds, response time:60 seconds,27,The reading passage explains a definition of,role distancing, which is a conflict between roles people wish for and roles people possess.,It states that, people would occasionally express their reluctance of playing current social roles directly.,28,In the lecture, the professor gives an example to further illustrate this.,A 13-year-old boy was playing with his friends in the living room when his mom came in and asked him to wash dishes. He knew very clearly that he should obey his mom and do the dishes.,29,But,on the other hand,he did not want his friends to have the idea that he was just a nice, good kid.,So he showed his reluctance by dragging out of the living room and walking into the kitchen slowly. Thus he balanced one of his roles as a son and another role as a friend.,30,By these means, the professor proves that, people would like to adapt to new social roles, but would release some emotional clues to express their unwillingness, which is related in the reading passage.,31,Ex.1,Reading,32,Self-fulfilling Prophecies,The self-fulfilling prophecy is a psychological phenomenon whereby a person believes something to be true, acts on that belief and by his actions causes the belief to become true eventually.,33,Normally,people all live under certain expectations from others.Once an individual accepts the social expectations toward him as true and realistic,he will first take these social beliefs and then formulate them into his own confidence.,34,After that,he starts to respond to his beliefs by taking practical actions. Finally, the social expectations on the individual become true,as a result of his continual efforts.,35,Self-fulfilling Prophecies,(what to read?),The self-fulfilling prophecy is a psychological phenomenon, whereby,a person, believes, something to be true, acts,on that belief and by his actions causes the belief to,become,true,eventually.,36,Normally,people all live under certain expectations from others.Once an individual accepts the social expectations toward him as true and realistic,he will, first, take these social beliefs and, then, formulate,(develop),them into his own confidence.,37,After that,he starts under certain expectations,.,1,),believe,2,),act,3,),true,39,Listening,40,Lecture:,(what to listen?),Interesting enough,ha?Self-fulfilling propheciessound like a sort of magic.Think about this:it first, starts an,expectation, which can be either, higher,or,lower, than the reality. However, after a psychological process called“self-suggestion”,the participants start to firmly, believe in,that expectation,.Soon after that,it becomes, true, because it has been,41,believed to be true.,There is an example of,self-fulfilling prophecies, which I often show to my students:,in the 1960s,a group of researchers in,North America, had conducted a series of experiments in order,to test,to what extent self-fulfilling prophecies could, make a change to peoples lives,.,First,a,42,group of,kids, were, randomly selected, from many different primary schools.Because the sample was from plenty of different areas and big enough,we could comfortably assume that this group of American kids were simply,as normal as,any other group of American kids.,After that, the researchers sent this group of children,to receive academic,43,education in a training group,.No educators involved in this program had any idea of what kind of kids they were going to teach. But,as part of the plan, the educators were all instructed carefully that these kids were, the top students, from all over the country and thus they should be,educated as geniuses,.Therefore, contrary to the normal education,44,encouragement and praise, were widely applied to these students in the process of education.,Five years later, when the researchers went back to finish the follow-up survey, they were surprised to notice that most kids educated and encouraged as geniuses demonstrated, hint,s of apparently, higher IQ,than normal kids.,45,By these means, the professor proves the importance of,scent marketing in shopping.,46,
