Some Phrases That Defined 20xx
For the first time since 2004, when Oxford Languages the publisher of the O.E.D.. started
choosing a Word of the Year 20xx, it declined to pick just one. We couldn't pick one, either. But here
are some words and phrases that we think capture what it felt like to be alive in 20xx.
a Blursday
The passage of time itself became seemingly unreliable this year, as some days fell like a week
while some months flew by in an instant. Our friends even launched a newsletter called What Day Is
It?〞
Remote learning
Farah Miller, an editor, shares her family's experience with remote learning this year. u Schools
shuttered without a plan for how 〔o 〔each homebound kids. My preschooler was given five worksheets
and a list of activities she couldn't possibly do on her own. Or are 〔hey really remotely learning? That
was the question I, along with parents across the US found myself asking in the spring."
ASocial distancing
As experts learned more about the spread of the virus, "6 feet" became the golden number: the
distance we should stay away from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19, yes, but also a
shorthand for how to navigate socialization in the new world.
Zoom
Up until around March of this year, Zoom was unknown to the public. Then the home became the
office for millions of Americans, and our social lives moved entirely online. Almost overnight Zoom
emerged as the go-to platform for private citizens, religious services and universities. "We Live in
Zoom Now, 〞 The Times even declared.
In what situation can the word " blursday 〞 be used according to the passage?
One is anxious about humans' future.

In the first days of my honeymoon, I travelled to Vasto, a small town with its beautiful landscape
in central Italy, to retrace the same steps my great-grandmother Filomena walked after her own
wedding, almost 100 years earlier.
Vasto wasn't on my radar in the early stages of planning my honeymoon, but when learning that it
wasn't far from the month-long route, I considered a visit. How could I be so close and not see where
Filomena came from? Anyway, I'd been so busy planning my own wedding that I didn't have much
time to think about what it meant to be married. As I was trying to figure out what a new family might
look like, it also made sense to turn to the past.
The story of my family I knew started when Filomena set foot in New York by ship in 1922. But
after I travelled to Vasto where she grew up, the starting point of her story shifted. I began to consider
Filomena as a young, adventurous woman planning a new life far from home. Her husband,
Domenico, had already gone ahead to work there. She had no other family in the US, and yet she was
prepared to get on a boat in Naples and sail into the unknown. Her willingness to see what could
remind me of marriage: you don't have to know what's coining next, you just need to want to go.
Then we visited (he edge of a valley near Filomena's house. In 1956, part of the world Filomena
grew up in almost disappeared during a landslide. When she returned for visits later in life, she saw a
landscape different from what she had remembered. Even the things wc expect to be permanent aren't
always so.
A few days spent walking in Filomena's footsteps, knowing all the unexpected turns that life
threw at her over five decades of marriage, I realized that you can never plan for life's uncertainties or
crave an outline for the future. If that kind of anxiety somehow creeps back in, I'll think of Filomena
on the deck of a steam ship, uncertain, but moving forward anyway.
Why did the author go to Vasto during her honeymoon?
To find out what (he lifestyle was like there.
To explore the true meaning of marriage
To reunite with her great-grandmother there
To enjoy the scenic beauty of Italy
What did the author find about her great-grandmother?
She never expected a life abroad.
She felt scared of the marriage
She dared to challenge a new life ahead.
She knew well what her future was like
What inspiration did the changed landscape bring to the author?
Humans need to protect the nature.
The power of nature is hard to control.
Things always go smoothly as expected.
Life is always full of uncertainties.
How will the author react to the misfortunes in her life after the visit to Vasto?
Check the situation and make plans for it
Follow Filomena's footsteps and keep going.
Predict how things will go and avoid the bad.
Evaluate the uncertainties and change them.

China launched a large robotic spacecraft on Nov. 24, 20xx at (he Wenchang Space Launch
Center in South China's Hainan province, tasking it with landing on the moon and bringing back lunar
samples, 44 years after the last time such substances were brought back to Earth.
If everything proceeds smoothly, about 2 kilograms of stones and soil will be collected and
packed in a vacuum metal container. The entire mission is scheduled to last about 23 days, according
to the China National Space Administration. Considering these highly so—histicatcd operations,
Chang'e 5 will be more difficult and challenging than previous Chinese lunar expeditions, designers
have said
According to a statement published by the space administration, the Chang'e 5 mission is intended
to fulfill several objectives. In terms of space engineering, it will demonstrate technical plans and
apparatus for autonomous lunar sampling and packing and moon-based launching, as well as lunar
orbital docking. In the scientific field, it will investigate the landing site's features, and enable
scientists to analyze the lunar samples' structure and physical traits so (hey can deepen their research
into lhe moon's origin and evolution. It added that (he mission also will help to foster the country's
knowledge technology and talent pool for its future manned missions to the moon and other
deep-space expeditions.

community, pave the way for the country's future lunar expeditions and boost its space science, and
will offer more opportunities to lunar researchers around the world. Scientists around the world are
welcome to participate in the research related to the lunar samples brought back by the mission. China
will publish a set of guidelines about the use and distribution of the samples after the mission.

It was decades ago, but it's still one of the most memorable conversations of my life. On a long,
slow train rattling north, with nothing to do but watch the rain, the guy sitting opposite began trying to
talk to me. Like most young women who have learned the hard way to be cautious of strangers, I
reacted coldly. But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.
So that's what we did, for hours and hours, since he turned out to be very talkative. When the train
eventually pulled in, we didn't swap numbers—it was a conversation strictly of its time—but I still
think about it occasionally on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently
like everyone else. Rarely can a person cheerfully break the social taboo 〔禁忌〕about talking to
strangers without any trace of ill intention but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how
to do it.
And that's why I feel it ridiculous about a campaign launched this week to heal bitter national
divides by encouraging Britons to talk to each other. Obviously, i〔 takes more than a small talk over
garden fences to unite a divided nation now. More people live alone than they did a generation ago,
and we socialise increasingly through screens instead of bothering to call. In reality? social media
platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division.
It is true that the44 tube chat "campaign of a few years back failed in its attempt to make Londoners
talk to each other on public transport. But even city residents who would normally die rather than make
eye contact with strangers still happily join the large crowds of people by the Thames for the New
Year's Eve fireworks. They would gel a far belter view at home on TV—it's not really about the
fireworks? but being part of social engagement.
There's no guarantee that this latest attempt to reconnect will succeed, but 1 hope that my
temporary train friend then is still talking, wherever he is now.
What led the author to start the talk with the guy on the train?
Her growing interest in communication.
Her typical easygoing personality
Her habit of chatting with strangers.
The intention of the train journey.
What has made talking to strangers a social taboo among the Britons?
A lack of basic communicating skills.
The absence of common topics.
The concern for personal safety.
The addiction to social media
How does technology affect people's mutual connection?
It is bringing people together in a larger sense.
It is positively helping break the national boundaries.
It has made people more divided than connected.
It is the key driving force of removing divisions .
What does the highly-attended firework show indicate?
Tube chat campaign can never make it.
TV programs al home are not appealing.
The charm of the fireworks is hard to resist.
People's desire to connect is still alive.

We all do it. We put off that annoying task for five more minutes, then for thirty minutes, then fbr
hours, until it doesn't get done at all. 16 We spend so much time stressing over the unfinished
task. Caught up in the cycle of procrastination 〔拖延〕,we almost forget how to effectively tackle hard
tasks. However, there is something you can do 〔o nip procrastination in the bud and take back control
over your daily life.
17 We only have a limited supply of willpower. Once it's been used up for the day, chances
of us tackling hard tasks are pretty slim. Dive into your hardest task when your energy level is at its
highest. This will ensure the best results.
Divide the task into smaller tasks. We tend to get overwhelmed when a giant project comes ahead

unable to take down a whole forest at once, you could certainly start with one tree or even a branch

Schedule your tasks on the calender. 19 To avoid〔his, create a practical plan. It will help
