Miss Lin of Singapore went to Hong Kong for a holiday. Soon after she got to Hong Kong, she went shopping
along Nathan Road. Suddenly a man came up to her and said, ”Hello, there, I haven’t seen you for a long time.” The
stranger continued talking to her for a while and then took out a small box from his pocket. ”Would you like to buy
some diamonds?” he asked, opening the box to show some shining stones. ”I’m willing to sell them to you
cheap ―only $300 for this diamond. How about it?” Miss Lin didn’t want to buy the diamond because she had heard
many stories of people being tricked (受骗). Also, at that moment a woman stopped and warned her, ”Don’t buy from

The man raised his voice at once, ”I’m honest. These diamonds are real.” In the end they took one of the diamonds

The thief went into the shop, and the policeman waited in the street for a long time. He began to worry. He thought

”Where’s that man who came in here to buy some bread?” asked the policeman.
”Oh, he went out by the back door,” said the shop-keeper.

3. Archimedes( 阿基米德) and the Crown
One day King Syrause called in Archimedes. ”Look at this crown, please,” he said. ”Is it made of different
metals? I want to know, because I paid a lot of money for it.”
Archimedes looked at the crown. It appeared to be made of gold, but perhaps there was a different metal
inside the gold. How could he find out? ”Go home and think,” said the King. ”Make some experiments. People
say that your experiments are very clever.”
He went home, and he went to the public baths. He stood beside his bath and looked at it. It was not quite full.
Then he got into it, and the water came up to the top.
While he was sitting in it, he suddenly had an idea. ”I’ve found it!” he cried.
He ran out into the street and went quickly home. The people in the street were surprised, because he was not
wearing any clothes. His mind was full of this wonderful idea, so he forgot to dress.
He made a few short experiments in his house, then he went straight to the King. ”Your Majesty(陛下), he
said, ”I’ve found the answer to your question. Allow me to show you an experiment.”
He put some gold and silver on the table, beside two pots. Then he began: ”Your crown weighs found pounds.
This bar of gold also weighs four pounds, and this bar of silver weighs the same amount. But gold is heavier than
silver, so the bar of silver must be larger. Is that correct?”
”Yes,” said the King.
”Good. Would you like to help me?” asked Archimedes. ”This big pot is full of water, if you put the gold in,
some water will go out into the small pot. Measure the amount of water. A mark inside the pot will be enough.
That’s right.”
Archimedes took out the gold. Then he filled the big pot again and emptied the small one. ” Next, put the
silver in. when some water goes out, measure it in the same way.”
The King did this. ”And now,” Archimedes continued, ”We shall put the crown in, if it is completely made of
gold, the water will reach the first mark. If it is made of silver, the water will reach the second mark.”
They watched, and the water came between the two marks.
”There!” cried Archimedes. ”There is the answer to your question. Your crown is not completely made of
gold. There is silver in it too.”

4.Hobbies
People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and relaxation. Sometimes
they even yield financial profit. Hobbies help people relax after periods of hard work, and provide a balance between work
and play. Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who have retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or
well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of his age, position, or income.
Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping
patients recover from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give bedridden(卧病在床的) or wheel-chair patients something to
do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take
up interesting hobbies or pastimes(消遣娱乐).
In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who were free did
enjoy hobbies. The ancient Egyptians played games with balls made of wood. Some Greeks and Romans collected
copper(铜) soldiers.
People today have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spend
on their jobs. Hobbies provide variety for workers who do the same monotonous(单调的)tasks all day long.
More people are retiring than ever before, and at an earlier age. Those who have developed hobbies never need to
worry about what to do with their newly-found free hours.
