As the summer holiday is here, are you planning a trip to relax after working so hard for a half year? Traveling, just like reading, is a refreshing journey, and a temporary retreat (逃避) from the busy world. Here are 4 books we recommend that you take on your trip. 1. Destination: Central Europe Recommended book: Life is Elsewhere, 1969, by Milan Kundera Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.” The book describes a young artist’s romantic but miserable life, about how he reads, dreams and has a relationship. Helene Simon, 99, was recently photographed as one of beauty brand Saie’s latest faces. In the campaign images, she is seen wearing a crisp white blouse and a beaded necklace along with the cosmetic company’s newest products. She’s also seen showing a joyful smile and great model poses. “I loved being on set (在片场) ,” Simon said. “The photographer was incredible and so fun. It definitely was a treat to get my hair and make-up done.” Simon actually happens to be Saie’s founder Laney Crowell’s great-grandmother, and Laney decided to ask Simon to model after her Instagram community responded with an overwhelming “yes” when she asked if her great-grandmother should be Saie’s next model. This was Simon’s first-ever modeling performance, and when initially approached she said “absolutely not”. “I think I laughed it off. Then my great-granddaughter persisted and encouraged me to show the world that 99-year-old women should still be represented.” Since making her modeling debut (首次亮相) , Saie has received lots of feedback. “Aw, this brought tears to my eyes!” “Hi Nanna, you are my goal,” someone commented. Another chimed in demanding, “More Nanna please!” another commenter said, “I love this post with all my heart. May she live to 120 !” Many others echoed the words with similar sentiments. After receiving all the positive feedback from her first major make-up modeling performance, Simon said “It is such a thrill.” and she is so surprised by all of the people sending notes and messages that they have seen her images and are inspired by them. You should never set limits on yourself. D. Your defeat now is your victory tomorrow. C Deep beneath the frozen surface of the Arctic swims a whale with a spiral tusk(螺旋角) growing on its head—the narwhal(独角鲸). Biologists have long debated the purpose of male narwhals’ tusks. The tusks, like those of elephants, are actually thin long teeth. And since narwhals are usually below the sea ice, it’s tough to see how they use their tusks. Zackary Graham, a graduate student in evolutionary biology from Arizona State University, wondered if the tusk was a sign showing the male’s position in the group. Comparing the tusk size to the whale’s overall body size could provide evidence. “One of the main trends that have been documented in over 100 different animals is disproportionate(不成比例的) growth. We called that hyperallometry,” said Graham. So Graham and his team turned to measurements of the tusks collected from 250 adult male narwhals over 35 years. It turned out the length of the tusks can vary widely even for males the same size, ranging from a foot and a half to more than eight feet. The top tusks thus appear to be like a billboard that shouts, “Look at me. I’m the biggest.” After all, only the strongest, best-fed individuals can afford to produce such a superb decoration. Of course, tusks can do more than just say, “Hey, how are you doing?” According to the team, the male’s tusks are sexual signals used to scare off male competitors and attract females. This is because many sexual characteristics are highly sensitive to nutrients and body condition, so only the strongest individuals have the energy to produce the largest ones. “Overall, our evidence supports the assumption that the tusk functions as a symbol of status. However, further evaluations of the narwhal’s ecology are necessary,” Graham said. 28. Why did Graham conduct the study? A. To explore the living habits of narwhals. B. To research the evolution of narwhals. C. To figure out the male narwhals’ status. D. To examine the function of narwhals’ tusks. 29. What does the underlined word “hyperallometry” refer to in paragraph 3? A. A research method. B. A habit of narwhals. C. A growth phenomenon. D. A kind of sea creature. 30. What is the author’s tone in paragraph 4? A. Serious. B. Surprised. C. Questioning. D. Humorous. 31. What does Graham think of the story? A. It gets unexpected results. B. It requires more information. C. It explores all potential factors. D. It fails to prove his assumption. D When I was younger, I thought science would make good things for everybody. It was obviously useful; it was good. But then during the war when I worked on the atomic bomb, this result of science was obviously very serious-it represented the destruction (摧毁) of people and put our future at risk. I had to ask myself, “Is some evil involved in science?” I thought long and hard about this question, and I will try to answer it in this talk. The first way in which science is of value is familiar to everyone: Scientific knowledge is an enabling power to do either good or bad, but it does not carry instructions on how to apply it. Such a power has obvious value, even though the power may be denied by what one does with it. Another value of science is the intellectual enjoyment it can provide us with. When we look at any question deeply enough, we feel the excitement and mystery coming into us again and again. With more knowledge comes a deeper and more wonderful mystery, inspiring one to look deeper still. Never concerned that the answer may let us down, with pleasure and confidence we turn over each new stone to find unimagined strangeness, just like opening a box of chocolate. I would now like to turn to a third value that science has. A scientist has a lot of experience with ignorance and doubt and uncertainty, and this experience is of great importance. When a scientist doesn’t know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has an idea as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt. Our freedom to doubt was born out of the deep and strong struggle against authority in the early days of science. In order to progress, we must not forget the importance of this struggle; we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Permit us to question, to doubt, to be not sure. 32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To criticize a common view. B. To introduce the topic. C. To explain a viewpoint. D. To prove an argument. 33. What do we know about the author as to the value of science? A. He thinks science always does harm to all. B. He never doubts the goodness of science. C. He interprets it from various perspectives. D. He thinks deeply but gets no answers to it. 34. Which of the following does the value of science mentioned in the passage NOT include? A. Power to offer help. B. Pleasure of deep thinking. C. Progress from questioning. D. Ignorance of authority. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Value of Science B. The Uncertainty of Science C. The Power of Science D. The Destruction of Science 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Artistic activities like taking a painting class or visiting a gallery are becoming increasingly popular today. 36 However, scientific studies have shown that art plays a critical role in promoting health and well-being. Art is found to be effective in relieving stress. This applies to both children and adults. Activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpting have been linked to lower stress and mental calmness. They take participants’ mind off busy daily work. 37 Another great benefit of art is that it encourages both kids and adults in imagination and creative thinking. It helps develop and improve problem-solving skills. 38 That allows people to imagine different solutions to problems. This type of creative thinking allows the brain to perform complicated functions in ways that learning a new language does. 39 It drives the brain to produce a hormone(激素) that makes people feel good about themselves, improves concentration, and increases motivation, providing a s
