Teaching Plan for M5U5 Unit 5 First Aid 主备教师:赵艳萍 Teaching goals: Knowledge goals To master the important words and sentences patterns of this unit through this period: injury, bleed, organ, poison, swell, damage, wound, mild, squeeze, symptom, etc. Ability goals Enable the Ss to have the ability to use what they’ve learnt to do first aid treatment for burns correctly and make a first-aid-kit. Let the Ss learn the reading skill of getting the main idea of each part and each passage Moral goals Increase the Ss’ awareness of the importance of knowing about first aid. Key teaching points and difficult points Teaching important and difficult points: How to tell different burn degrees and offer right first aid Dos and Don’ts for first aid for burns Teaching Methods: Individual, pair or group work in order to motivate every student to work in class. Teaching Aids: The blackboard and the multi-media. Teaching Procedures: Period 1: Warming Up & Pre-reading &Speaking 每日谚语:天有不测风云,人有旦夕祸福。 1. Nothing is so certain as the unexpected 2. Accidents will happen. Step I. Greetings and lead-in. 1. What is the most important in our life? Car, house, money, job or life? (life). 【T: As we know, accidents may happen at any time. Many people died because they were not treated in time. If we knew how to give first aid, more lives would be saved.】 2. What’s first aid is and why is it important? First aid is the first kind of help given to someone who suddenly falls ill or gets injured before a doctor can be found. Often the illness or injury is not serious, but there are other times when giving first aid quickly will save one’s life. Step II. First aid quiz: 1. The best way to treat a hurt ankle is to (A) A. Put an ice pack on your ankle. B. Put a heating pad(垫子)around your ankle. C. Keep on walking and jumping. 2. If you get a nosebleed, gently let your head back to stop the bleeding. (B) A. True B. You may become a first aid expert in the near future. 4~6: You have some knowledge of first aid, but you should work harder and learn more about it. 0~3: It seems that you are not interested in first aid. If an emergency happens to the people around you, you will have some trouble in helping them. Step III. (Page 33, Warming Up) Discuss in groups about these pictures: What happened in the picture? What kind of first aid should you give? Picture 1: a snake bite (He is holding onto the lower part of his leg. A snake has bitten him on his leg.) Lay the victim down and keep him/her still. Don’t try to suck out the venom (毒液); Don’t apply a tourniquet (止血带). Apply pressure to the bitten area with your hands and then with a bandage firmly over the bite. Do not move the victim. Call medical help. Picture 2: Bleeding (She has cut her arm with some broken glass and bleeding badly.) Put a bandage on the wound and apply pressure to reduce the bleeding. Picture 3: a sprained ankle (He is holding on to his ankle. He has badly sprained his ankle.) Have the victim sit down and elevate(抬高) the foot. Put an ice pack on the ankle to reduce the swelling(肿胀). Put a firm bandage around the foot and ankle. Picture 4: choking (She is clutching her throat. She is choking on a piece of food.) If the person can cough, don’t do anything. If he/she can’t cough and is turning blue in the face, make him/her spit by patting him/her on the back. Picture 5: a broken arm (She has fallen down some stairs and has broken her arm.) Don’t move the broken bone if possible. Keep the arm still using a sling(吊腕带).Get medical help immediately. Picture 6: a bloody nose (He has a bleeding nose. The blood dripping out onto his hand.) Get the person to sit down, tilt(倾斜) his/her head forward slightly and gently pinch(捏) the soft part of the nose below the bridge (鼻梁). Step IV. Pre-reading by looking and saying 1. Work in pairs. Look at the picture on page 33, at the bottom of right corner, and tell us what has happened in the picture. The child has pulled boiling water onto herself. She will have bad burns. 2. What kind of first aid would you perform in this situation? Cool the area of skin; wash it under the cold running water. Cover the wound with bandage/ clean cloth. See a doctor if necessary. Step V. Speaking (Page 39-40) Using the following instructions to make a dialogue. Watch out for … Look out for … and … Don’t … because … Be careful (not) to … Make sure that … Mind you do / don’t … Take care to … Cover … with … If it is … go to the hospital. Never … Step VI. Greetings and lead-in. So first aid is important for the victims(受害者), and necessary for us to learn about. Step 2. Fast reading 1. Skim for general idea. How many parts are the text and what are they? It is about first aid for burns and the information is organized according to causes, types, characteristics and first aid treatment for burns. 1). The purpose of skin 2). Cause of burns 3). Types of burns 4). Characteristics/Symptoms(症状)of burns 5). First aid treatment 2. In which order are these topics covered in the text? Number them from 1 to 5. (35Ex1) Step III. Careful reading 1.What can skin do for our body ? Protect you against diseases, poisons and the sun’s harmful rays. Keep you warm or cool. Prevent you from losing water. Give you sense of touch. 2.Causes of burns You can get burnt by: hot liquids; steam; fire radiation; the sun electricity and chemicals . 3.Types of burn First degree burns: (the top and the second layer of the skin) Second degree burns: (the top and the second layer of the skin) Third degree burns: (all three layers of the skin) 4. Label these pictures first, second and third degree burns.(P35 Ex2) 5. Fill in the blanks about characteristics of burns 1).First degree burns.: dry, red and mildly swollen… 2) Second degree burns: rough, red and swollen with blisters… 3).Third degree burns : black and white and charred 6. Summarize the dos and don’s for burns First aid for burns Dos Don’ts Take clothing off; take off other clothing and jewelry; place burns under gently running water; use cool, clean and wet clothes to cover the burned areas; cover the burned area with dry and clean bandage; keep the burned areas higher than the heart; go to see a doctor if necessary. Don’t use icy water; never rub burned areas; never put butter, oil or ointments on burns 7.Answer the questions (Page 35, Ex3) 8. Decide whether the first aid treatment is Right (R) or Wrong (W). (Page35 Ex4) 9. Reading comprehension exercises《赢在课堂》(Page 66). Step IV. Role play by giving a special situation of burns Step V. Summary From the passage, the Ss will have a clear idea about First Aid for Burns and they can do first aid treatment for burns correctly. They also learn to make a first-aid-kit and place an emergency call for help. Through the passage, the Ss’ thinking ability and acting ability are improved. At last, they will be told to remember the following: First aid knowledge is very helpful, but the awareness of prevention(预防) is far more important. Step VI. Homework 1. Get more about first aid from the newspaper, magazine or the Internet. 2. Review the text carefully and recite the important words and phrases. 3. finish exercise on page .赢在课堂.
