Unit 5 First Aid

Teaching goals:
Knowledge goals
To master the important words and sentences patterns of this unit through this period: injury, bleed, organ, poison, swell, damage, wound, mild, squeeze, symptom, etc.
Ability goals
Enable the Ss to have the ability to use what they’ve learnt to do first aid treatment for burns correctly and make a first-aid-kit.
Let the Ss learn the reading skill of getting the main idea of each part and each passage
Moral goals
Increase the Ss’ awareness of the importance of knowing about first aid.

【T: As we know, accidents may happen at any time. Many people died because they were not treated in time. If we knew how to give first aid, more lives would be saved.】
2. What’s first aid is and why is it important?
First aid is the first kind of help given to someone who suddenly falls ill or gets injured before a doctor can be found. Often the illness or injury is not serious, but there are other times when giving first aid quickly will save one’s life.

Step III. (Page 33, Warming Up)
Discuss in groups about these pictures:
What happened in the picture? What kind of first aid should you give?
Picture 1: a snake bite (He is holding onto the lower part of his leg. A snake has bitten him on his leg.)
Lay the victim down and keep him/her still. Don’t try to suck out the venom (毒液); Don’t apply a tourniquet (止血带). Apply pressure to the bitten area with your hands and then with a bandage firmly over the bite. Do not move the victim. Call medical help.
Picture 2: Bleeding (She has cut her arm with some broken glass and bleeding badly.)
Put a bandage on the wound and apply pressure to reduce the bleeding.
Picture 3: a sprained ankle (He is holding on to his ankle. He has badly sprained his ankle.)
Have the victim sit down and elevate(抬高) the foot. Put an ice pack on the ankle to reduce the swelling(肿胀). Put a firm bandage around the foot and ankle.
Picture 4: choking (She is clutching her throat. She is choking on a piece of food.)
If the person can cough, don’t do anything. If he/she can’t cough and is turning blue in the face, make him/her spit by patting him/her on the back.
Picture 5: a broken arm (She has fallen down some stairs and has broken her arm.)
Don’t move the broken bone if possible. Keep the arm still using a sling(吊腕带).Get medical help immediately.
Picture 6: a bloody nose (He has a bleeding nose. The blood dripping out onto his hand.)
Get the person to sit down, tilt(倾斜) his/her head forward slightly and gently pinch(捏) the soft part of the nose below the bridge (鼻梁).
Step IV. Pre-reading by looking and saying
1. Work in pairs. Look at the picture on page 33, at the bottom of right corner, and tell us what has happened in the picture.
The child has pulled boiling water onto herself. She will have bad burns.
2. What kind of first aid would you perform in this situation?
Cool the area of skin; wash it under the cold running water.
Cover the wound with bandage/ clean cloth.
See a doctor if necessary.

Step I. Greetings and lead-in.
So first aid is important for the victims(受害者), and necessary for us to learn about.
Step 2. Fast reading
1. Skim for general idea. How many parts are the text and what are they?
It is about first aid for burns and the information is organized according to causes, types, characteristics and first aid treatment for burns.

Step III. Careful reading
1.What can skin do for our body ?
Protect you against diseases, poisons and the sun’s harmful rays.

2.Causes of burns
You can get burnt by: hot liquids; steam; fire radiation; the sun electricity and chemicals .
3.Types of burn
First degree burns: (the top and the second layer of the skin)
Second degree burns: (the top and the second layer of the skin)
Third degree burns: (all three layers of the skin)

Step V. Summary
From the passage, the Ss will have a clear idea about First Aid for Burns and they can do first aid treatment for burns correctly. They also learn to make a first-aid-kit and place an emergency call for help. Through the passage, the Ss’ thinking ability and acting ability are improved. At last, they will be told to remember the following: First aid knowledge is very helpful, but the awareness of prevention(预防) is far more important.
