I believe in taking action to solve problems around me. Passively accepting the status quo (现状) is something that doesn't event cross my mind.
My mother wrote poetry, books, and letters to the editor to try to change the world - some were published; others remained manuscripts that she worked and reworked with comments from authors she respected. She did not sit still.
When, at ninety-three, illness left her only a short time to live, she told me that she had submitted her recent book of poetry to a publisher but hadn't received a response from them. So I called the publisher, only to learn that the company had stopped operating for lack of money. As my mother's health was slipping quickly, there wasn't time to find a different publisher. After a few weeks of feeling helpless, I began to look for another solution.
Luckily, I found a printer, who was touched by my mother's story and quickly moved into action with me. We worked together to complete the book just a few days before I left to see my mother for the last time. I handed it to her gift-wrapped. Her pain medication made it hard for her to see and think clearly, and she struggled to read the title of the book I had given her. When she finally recognized her title, her face softened into a smile. "You remembered," she said and then passed away with no regret. And then I knew - she had expected all along that I wouldn't sit on my hands when in trouble and take action actively.
Not finding a solution wasn't an option. And this has guided me through so much of my life. I live in the world of education and opportunity. This is a daily challenge. When faced with a problem, I can't simply shrug my shoulders and say, "I don't know." While I can't change the world alone, I can't accept the status quo, and I need to take action.

Lucas Mwanzia, 17, is using assistive technology to search the Internet for information now. Today's class is on biology. Mwanzia is in eighth grade, having started school at a later age because he can hardly see anything. But before the new technology came into being, blind students like him in Kenya were still using Braille books for their studies.
He says the technology has opened up new frontiers that were once inaccessible. "Braille books are not cheap and you have to use quite a sum to purchase one," Mwanzia explained. "But now since we have computers we get the books at virtually no cost. So we can download various books to read and then just close the program."
The school adopted "assistive technology" six years ago, enabling blind students to access information from computers and iPads.
Zachary Muasya, one of the school's teachers, was born blind. He has been teaching the students how to use the technology for about two years now. He says the technology presents opportunities that can level the playing field for his students. "Assistive technology equips the learners with very many skills that really make them independent in life," he said. "They can read materials like books, magazines, newspapers by themselves. And apart from that一assistive technology equips them with employable skills."
The assistive technology costs $1,000 for a school to install. But an NGO called InAble has provided it to the schools at no cost. So far, four out of Kenya's 11 schools for the blind have adopted the technology. InAble says it will provide the funding for the remaining schools to come on board.
Peter Okeyo, the program manager at InAble, says, "The fact is that they learnt that technology in primary and high school, but when they move to university, they realize there is not that technology, they have to go back to Braille."

In New York, students at 18 schools participate in a program called We Future Cycle. Started by Anna Giordano in 2014 } it teaches kids to recycle, compost(制成堆肥)，and reduce food waste.
Lunch areas at the participating schools are equipped with three clearly marked bins - compost, recycle and share. While the first two are common in schools, the third is rare, where kids can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. Items in the container are available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the food bank. Giordano says the three bins have helped reduce the number of trash bags from an average of 22 to just 2!
To ensure kids adopt similar habits at home, the non-profit has created extensive curriculum to educate families about the importance of sorting waste into the proper streams of recycling, composting, trash and food to donate. They also urge parents to have open conversations with their kids about food choices.
But, as we're all aware, kids aren't the only ones that waste food -- adults are equally bad, if not worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supperclub in 2014. The occasionally organized dinners promise people a tasty multi-course meal for a mere $50 USD per person. It is also a plan to save waste because the delicious food is made from vegetables that are past their prime and, therefore, headed for the trash bin.
The other catch? Customers have to eat their meals inside a dumpster(大型垃圾装卸车)! The place, of course, is totally clean. It is just a symbolic gesture. In addition to helping people rethink their actions, Treuhaft also helps them do good by donating part of the profits to non-profits devoted to fighting against food waste.
