Yasmin and Dad went back home. Let's unpack the shopping. A vest! Milk! A pump! That's odd! 3-3 Gran is cross The twins go to visit Gran. Flick brings a pram. Fred brings his frog. Queen Anneena had a feast. Fifteen queens came to the feast. Queen Jean had heaps of meat. Queen Nelly had heaps of jelly. But Queen Teeny Weeny did not eat. "What do you want to eat then?" said Queen Anneena. "One green leaf," said Queen Teeny Weeny. But was not a leaf to be seen! Queen Anneena sent King Kareem to the shop. He came back with one green leaf. Queen Anneena was happy to see Queen Teeny Weeny eat the leaf. "Do you want some tea and a sweet?" she said. "No," said Queen Teeny Weeny. "I am going home to clean my teeth." 4-2 Spike says Spike is five. Spike says he can run for miles and miles. Spike says he has nine bikes. Spike says he can dive. He says he wins prizes for diving. Spike says he can drive. He says he wins prizes for driving. Spike says he can fight fires and feed wild lions. Spike says his mum is a spy and his dad rides a crocodile. Spike says he can fly. He says he eats a pie in the sky every night. Spike says that he never, ever tells a lie. 4-3 The wrong kind of knight Nasim was a knight. But he didn't like to ride and he didn't like to fight. Nasim liked to read and write, and he liked to knit. One night, there was a knock at the door. "I need you to fight a dragon!" cried King Kareem. "But I'm the wrong kind of knight!" said Nasim. "I don't like fighting!" "Never mind!" cried the king. "Hurry up!" "The dragon is in my bed!" said the king. Nasim's knees were knocking. He lifted the blanked and saw... a tiny dragon. The dragon's knees were knocking too. "I'm freezing," he said. "Fight him!" cried the king. "No. I'm the wrong kind of knight," said Nasim, and he began to knit. Nasim was very quick at knitting. He knitted a vest, some socks and some long knickers. The dragon was delighted. "Thank you!" he said, and off he went. "I think you were the right kind of knight!" said the king. 4-4 Moan moan moan My goldfish never moans at me. She never says, "Don't climb that tree." She never tells me, "Don't throw stones." But Mum just moans and moans and moans. Don't dig holes. Don't pick that rose. Don't untie your sister's bows. Hang that coat up. Dry that bowl. Don't mix jam with soap and coal. Come on, slowcoach, hurry up. Eat that toast. Don't drop that cup. Fold those clothes up. Blow your nose. Did you dry between your toes? Hold my hand to cross the road. Don't eat that - you might explode! Go to bed. Don't suck your thumb. I wish my goldfish was my mum. 4-5 The snake and the drake A duck and a drake had a nest by a lake. One rainy day, a snake came to the nest. The duck got away but the snake got the drake. "Let go of my tail," said the drake. "No," said the snake. "I am going to eat you." "Will you eat me with some cake?" said the drake. "That is best way to eat drake." "I can't make cake," said the snake. "But Raven can make cake," said the drake. I will wait," said the snake, and he let the drake get away. Snake lay and waited. He waited all day. But the drake did not come back. Snake is still waiting. 4-6 Tadpoles What can you see in this lake? Can you see some blobs of jelly? Can you see some black dots inside the jelly? Those dots are tiny eggs. The dots grow. The jelly shrinks. The dots are growing tails. They are baby tadpoles! The tadpoles are tiny. They stick to the weeds. Then they begin to swim. Quick, tadpoles, swim away! Here comes a big fish! The fish eats some of the tadpoles. The rest swim away. They hide in the weeds. Can you see some bumps on this tadpole? Those bumps will be legs. These tadpoles only have back legs. This tadpole has all its legs. Its tail is shrinking. This tadpole has no tail. The tadpole kicks with its legs. It jumps out of the lake. But is it a tadpole? No, it's a frog! 5-1 Sue Kangaroo This is school and this is Sue and this is Mummy Kangaroo. The teacher's name is Mrs Drew. She says hello to Mum and Sue. "This is Sue," says Mrs Drew. "Do be kind to her. She's new." "Time to paint," says Mrs Drew. Sue says, "I like red and blue." "Time to glue," says Mrs Drew. "Sue can glue a kangaroo!" "Dinner time," says Mrs Drew. "This is yummy stew," says Sue. "Music time," says Mrs Drew. "I can play the spoons!" says Sue. Toot! Toot! Boom! Boom! "Home time soon," says Mrs Drew. "But what is in your pocket, Sue?" Sue takes out a tube of glue. She takes some spoons and paint out too. "The school has rules," said Mrs Drew. "You can't take those things home with you." Sue is sad. "Don't cry," says Prue. "Play with them tomorrow, Sue." "Is there school tomorrow too?" "Is that true? Hooray!" says Sue. Here is Mummy Kangaroo. "Hi, Mum! School is cool!" says Sue. 5-2 The Cinderella Play The twins were in a play. It was a play of Cinderella. Mum and Dad came to see it. Gran came too. Fred was the prince. He had to sing a song. Flick was a goose. She had to hiss at the urly sisters. The ugly sisters were bossy. They made Cinderella do the dusting. Cinderella had an old dress and a duster. But then she got a nice new dress. She got some sliver slippers too. Cinderella went to the palace. She danced with the prince. But then she ran away. She dropped a sliver slipper. The prince picked it up. Cinderella ran home. Her ugly sisters went home too. Cinderella had her old dress on. The prince had to knock on the door. He had to try the slipper on Cinderella annd her sisters. But Fred had lost the slipper! "Have my boot!" said Miss Hill. The ugly sisters tried on the boot. It was too loose. But they said, "It's too tight!" Cinderella tried on the boot. It was too loose. But she said, "It fits!" Mum and Dad liked the play. "It was better than the cinema!" said Gran. 5-3 Usmans Books My name is Usman. This is my bookshelf. I like reading my books. I wish I could step into a book! If I could step into this book... I would meet a cook. I could put a hat on too and we would cook a good pudding. If I could step into this book... I could meet Red Riding Hood. I could help her carry her basket and I could help the woodcutter rescue her. If I could step into this book... I would meet Puss in Boots. I could pull on some boots too and I would chase mice with him. If I could fly into this book... I would meet a spaceman. I could put on a helmet too and we would whoosh to the moon in a rocket. If I could run into this book... I would meet a football team. We would play football and I would kick the ball into the goal. And if you could step into this book... you would meet me! 5-4 The Upside-down Browns Mr and Mrs Brown read the paper upside down. Mr and Mrs Brown have a teapot with two spouts and coffee comes out of their taps. Mr and Mrs Brown have a funny round house. It spins round and round like a roundabout. Mr Brown puts on his trousers to have a shower. He blows his nose on a towel. He puts on his sun hat when it is cloudy. He takes it off when the sun comes out. Mrs Brown is funny too. She bounces around in a crown. She puts flour on her nose and she puts powder in the cakes. Mr and Mrs Brown go to town in their dressin
