A cosmopolite in a cafe
The new term is starting. In the first English class, our English teacher introduced us a novel ‘A Cosmopolite in a Cafe’ written by the famous American writer O·Henry. He is the one of the world's three short story master. His novels mainly to satire the society. Of course this novel is no exception.
It told us a story that the hero met a cosmopolite in a cafe at midnight. The cosmopolite showed off his international experience as a citizen of the world. However, the man who took the whole world in his hand did not allow anyone say that his hometown.
Although I seldom read English novel ,I still feel the charm of English. For a example, when the writer describe the cosmopolite. He used ‘his conversation rang along parallels of latitude and longitude.’ ‘He took the great, round world in his hand, so to speak ,familiarly, contemptuously,’ these words showed him looked down upon the whole word. In addition, ’He spoke disrespectfully of the equator,he skipped from continent to continent, he derided the zones,he mopped up the high seas with his napkin. He used a exaggerated approach highlighting the the image of the cosmopolite. Also,Showing his contemptuous attitude towards the world.
The cosmopolite declared warmly that’A relic of the stone age.’He thought that we can’t judge someone through their birthplace. Since the hero almost believed that he was a true citizen of the world. However, at the end of the novel he fought with the one who spoke his hometown’s bum sidewalks and water supply. The dramatic end raised readers thinking of the novel. I tried to search for the information of the writing background. But I did not find it.I always believe that a novel is the product of the times. The author tries to show that pose as a person of high morals of society, many senior people is a liar, a successful liar.
The novel has the magic that the front seems to appear trite and insignificant description, imperceptibly into the author carefully set up, until at last, give the reader a final surprise.
