His risks have paid off in great success and fame, and he was awarded Time magazine’s Man of the Year for 1991. In his youth, Turner found himself following in the footsteps of his father, a millionaire in the advertising business. When Ted was in his twenties, he took over his father’s business and made it more profitable than ever. In 1976, Turner bought a struggling baseball team, and turned it into the second best in America. This baseball team brought him profits rather than continuing to spend his money. In 1986, Turner put himself into millions of dollars of debt by buying a movie studio, but he has since made millions from the purchase. Turner’s ability to read the market and take “smart risks” was envied by many ambitious investors. They are extremely jealous of his capability of predicting what the future will bring and investing in it. (Adapted from “Ted Turner” from Basic Training Two page 55) 泰德·特纳 美国商人泰德·特纳的一生体现了一句话:“要么做个领导,要么被领导,要么就出局。” Unit 2 Telephone Communication Dialogue 1 Asking about New Products on the phone (In Jennie Wang’s office.)T Jennie: Marcus, you mentioned that you would like to buy a few sets of office furniture. Do you already know what models you would like? Here are our catalogues, brochures and suggested retail price lists. T Marcus: Thank you. Yes, I’m interested in the P120 Series and the J310 series. T Jennie: The P120 series is made of stainless steel . The pieces are durable yet heavy. Our J310 series are new products made out of a type of polymer . They’re lighter and quite easy to move about.T Marcus: The P120 series attracts me mainly because its price. We have the same kind of office furniture made in America. Yet the price is about 120 % higher than yours.T Jennie: Yes, our office furniture does have price advantages . Even the suggested retail price is much lower than the wholesale price of the American products.T Marcus: Can you give me the wholesale price?T Jennie: That depends on how much you order. T Marcus: I’m thinking of ordering 20 sets of the P120 series this time. If sales go well, I’ll order more.T Jennie: Anticipating further purchases , I’ll give you the wholesale price, even though you are only ordering 20 sets. That’s the price we give to our agents.T Marcus: Thank you. But I want to remind you that I need to pay custom duty and the cost advertisement is also rather high.T Jennie: I understand. We’ll give you an additional 2% discount from our wholesale price if you order a large quantity next time.T Marcus: That’s good. As for your J310 series, which is less expensive than the P120 series, I feel uncertain about the material you use in making this furniture. Is it a kind of plastic? T Jennie: I’m not sure. I only know that the J310 series is made out of polymer. It is firm, durable and lightweight.T Marcus: I’m curious how you assemble the parts when you use polymer as the main material.T Jennie: I’m afraid we need to ask Joseph Liu about such details. Let me contact him.T Mary: Hello, Joseph Liu’s office. May I help you?T Jennie: Hi, This is Jennie Wang. I’d like to speak to Joseph Liu.T Mary: I’m afraid he is not available at the moment. He’s attending a board meeting . Would you like to speak to someone else in the company? T Jennie: Well, in fact, I want some information about the J310 series. Do you think there is anyone else who can help?T Mary: Chen Feng, our senior engineer knows all the details of the J310 series. However, he’s on a business trip . Could I ask Joseph Liu to return your call?T Jennie: O.K. That’s very kind of you.T Mary: May I have your phone number?T Jennie: 025-84357843 extension 115. I’m the sales manager from Thompson Nanjing. Joseph knows me very well. Ask him to contact me as soon as possible. T Mary: I’ll make a note of that. T Jennie: Thank you very much. T Unit 2 CNN and “The King of Media” The development of the Cable News Network (CNN) was Ted Turner’s most important business move. When Ted began CNN in 1980, he had a vision that the future world would be linked though telecommunications . Previously , television news and newspapers had been broadcast or sold in only one country. Therefore they focused on events in that country and often reported events from that country’s point of view. When media companies become international , they break down national borders and the same information becomes available at the same moment to people around the world. This internationalization of the media has already had a great effect on world politics , culture and economics . T When Turner first proposed the idea of an international news network, most of his colleagues thought he was crazy and told him that a 24-hour channel featuring only news reports would never be profitable or popular. Turner pushed forward anyway, and in a few years, CNN was making almost $200 million a year in profit, changing the way people saw the world and the way leaders ran the world. Because many of CNN’s programs are live, people around the globe can witness events as they happen and base their decisions on this information. T The success of CNN has started a whole new age in telecommunications; from now on, all successful forms of communication media will have to become international, giving countries access to the world. Some people call Turner “The King of Media,” and his kingdom now spans the world.T Unit 3 Booking Dialogue 1 Booking Flight Tickets (Jennie Wang asks Tina, a staff member in the Sales Department to book two flight tickets. Tina telephones East China Airlines Ticket Office.)T Reservations Agent: East China Airlines. Good morning. T Reservations Agent: Do you want the morning or the afternoon flight?T Tina: There is a flight leaving Lukou International Airport at 8:10 in the morning. That would be the most convenient .T Reservations Agent: I’m afraid that flight is fully booked. I’ll just check to see if there have been any cancellations … No. It’s fully booked at the moment. T Tina: Could you check other flights leaving Nanjing for Shenzhen around noon, please?T Reservations Agent: Let me see. There are only two flights in the afternoon. The earlier one departs Nanjing at 15:50 and arrives in Shenzhen at 17:40. The later one takes off from Lukou Airport at 17:30.T Tina: Well, in that case, the 15:50 flight is better. Can I book two seats on it, please? T Reservations Agent: May I have your name, please?T Tina: My name is Tina. But I am booking the flight tickets for Jennie Wang and Marcus Rodgers.T Reservations Agent: Could you spell these names for me please?T Tina: J-e-n-n-i-e, W-a-n-g.T Reservation: I am sorry. What is the second letter of the last name?T Tina: A as in Andrew .T Reservations Agent: How do you spell Marcus Rodgers?T Tina: M-a-r-c-u-s, R-o-d-g-e-r-s.T Reservations Agent: First-class or economy ?T Tina: Economy, please.T Reservations Agent: One way or round trip T Tina: One way.T Reservations Agent: One moment, let me confirm the information . Unit 3 The American Attitude Toward Manual Labor The self-made man is glorified in America. People respect those who rise to the top through their own effort , usually beginning by working with their hands. Most of the people who settled in the United States were poor. The country they came to was a wilderness . Land had to be cleared of trees in order to make farms ; mines had to be developed ; houses, shops, and public buildings had to be built. Everyone had to help build them. Manual labor was highly valued . T This attitude toward manual labor is seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at home that is not only comfortable but even luxuriously furnished . This family is well off, yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself. She will serve it herself, and will wash the dishes afterward . Furthermore , the dinner will not merely consist of something quickly and easily assembled from the contents of various cans and a cake or pie bought at the nearby bakery . On the contrary , the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. In addition , she does most of her other household work. And even though her husband may be a professional man, he talks about washing the car, digging in his flower beds, or painting the house. His wife may even help him with these things, just as he often helps her with the dish-washing . The son who is away at college may wait on tables and wash dishes in a restaur
