Here are a few of 2019’s winning entries. Red Night Photographed by Roberto Garcia Roa, it was declared last year’s overall winner. The image captures both the beauty of the magnificent snake and its fear of human threats like fires. The ecologist says, “During my visit to Madagascar, I had the pleasure of finding this snake and photographing it. To offer a dramatic scene reflecting the conditions that these snakes are suffering, I used an external red light as a source of light to capture the environment.” The Rhino’s Annual Haircut It was photographed by ecologist Molly Penny. The ongoing demand for rhino (犀牛) horns has reduced the population to just 30,000 globally. To try to save the species, ecologists in South Africa, home to over 20,000 southern white rhinos, have decided to saw off (锯掉) it part of the animals’ horns, which regrow every year. “The Rhino’s Annual Haircut,” captured beautifully in the black-and-white photo by Molly Penny from the University of the West of England, reduces the risk of the animals being cruelly murdered. For the Love of Flamingos Photographed by Peter Hudson, it captures a heart-shaped cloud of pink flamingos in Kenya, which is truly a sight like none other. The ecologist says, “Flamingos are all legs and necks but meanwhile beautiful and fascinating and I admit I have a deep passion for them, so I was thrilled when, flying high over Lake Magadi, I watched this flock from themselves into a heart shape.”. Flames in Flumes Photographed by Nilanjan Chatterjee, it captures a water redstart waiting to catch an insect near a small waterfall. It was the best overall student submission. The photographer wanted to show the struggle the river birds are likely to face from the slowdown in water flow due to planned dams in rivers across India. 36. What can we know about “Red Night”? A. Roberto Garcia Roa suffered a lot to take it. B. It describes a snake’s suffering in the fires. C. It won the first place in 2019 BES’ photography competition. D. Roberto Garcia Roa was very frightened when he took it. 37. What may be the topic of “The Rhino’s Annual Haircut”? A. The tips on saving an endangered rhino. B. The cruelty of killing an endangered rhino. C. The scene of taking part of a horn from a rhino. D. The method of helping a rhino to grow a horn again. 38. Where was “For the Love of Flamingos” photographed? A. In South Africa. B. In Kenya. C. In India. D. In Madagascar. 39. How is “Flames in Flumes” different from the other pictures? A. To introduce a photography competition. B. To remind us to protect some animals. C. To warn us of worsening nature. D. To introduce some winning photos. B My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard a “rock garden”. There the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. Very often when we have more flowers, Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to bring some color to the area. Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediately recognize. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could find out what it was. Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. It looked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed (除草) around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun. If a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth. We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other things will begin to support us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to realize our goals. 41. The family planted flowers in the yard ________. A. to attract visitors B. to remove the rocks C. to please their neighbors D. to make the area colorful 42. The author let the tiny plant continue growing ________ . A. to see how long it could live B. to see how big it could grow C. to find out what it actually was D. to know if his wife had planted it 43. The author think the sunflower was unusual because ________. A. it was very thin and tall B. it had only one head on it C. it grew on top of a big rock D. it began to grow under a rock 44. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A. rocks cannot prevent us from success B. we can get over difficulties if we trust ourselves C. we should take good care of the rock gardens D. sunflowers are able to grow everywhere 45. Which is the best title of the passage? A. Stand Tall Like the Sunflower B. The Sunflower and My Family C. Being Proud of the Sunflower D. The Secret of the Sunflower C Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles(微粒) in almost 80% of the people tested. The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may live in organs. The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year. Huge amounts of plastic waste are left in the environment and microplastics now pollute the entire planet, from the top of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces (排泄物) of babies and adults. The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made. “Our study is the first indication that we have polymer particles(聚合物颗粒) in our blood — it’s a breakthrough result,” said Prof Dick Vethaak, an expert at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “But we have to extend the research and increase the sample sizes, the number of polymers assessed, etc.” Further studies by a number of groups are already under way, he said. “It is certainly reasonable to be concerned,” Vethaak said. “The particles are there and are transported throughout the body.” He said previous work had shown that microplastics were 10 times higher in the faeces of babies compared with adults and that babies fed with plastic bottles are taking millions of microplastic particles a day. Vethaak acknowledged that the amount and type of plastic varied considerably between the blood samples. “But this is a pioneering study,” he said, with more work now needed. He said the differences might reflect short-term exposure before the blood samples were taken, such as drinking from a plastic-lined coffee cup, or wearing a plastic face mask. “The big question is what is happening in our body?” Vethaak said. “Are the particles retained in the body? Are they transported to certain organs, such as getting past the blood-brain barrier? And are these levels sufficiently high to cause disease? We urgently need to fund further research so we can find out.” 46. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2? A. Air Pollution particles can cause death eventually. B. Microplastics can be deadly to humans. C. There is no evidence that microplastics harm human cells. D. Microplastics can travel throughout body and damage organs. 47. What can we learn about microplastics from Paragraph 4? A. They are found in most people. B. Polyethylene found in blood samples might be taken from drinks bottles. C. A quarter of the blood samples contained PET particles. D. Half of the microplastics in the blood samples were likely introduced by drinking from plastic containers. 48. According to Paragraph 5, what was Prof Dick Vethaak’s attitude towards their findings? A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Excited. D. Depressed. 49. The underlined part “this is a pioneering study” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________. A. we are the pioneers in the field of plastic research B. we need more blood examples and more work to do C. we are entering a whole new field of research D. this is an extremely important study 50. In which section of the newspaper may this article appear? A. Political. B. Fashion. C. Food. D. Environment. D We are all born social and company to live
