The winter holiday is coming. What are the students going to do during the winter holiday? We did a survey and this is what we learned. All the students like the winter holiday because there is an important festival—the Spring Festival.
Most students say they are going to finish their homework first. After finishing homework, they can have a good time. During the Spring Festival, they are going to visit their friends and relatives(亲戚). They are going to buy some new clothes and good food. Most students are going to watch TV with their families. Some are going to play computer games with friends. Li Lei is going to travel with his parents. They are going to Hainan Island because it’s very warm in winter. Huang Jing is going to the countryside to see her grandparents with her parents. Yang Fan is going to take guitar lessons. He loves to play the guitar. Lin Juan is going to play ping-pong every day in the winter holiday. She wants to have a healthy body. I hope all of them can enjoy themselves during the holiday.

What will our life be like in 100 years? No one can truly know the answer, but we are sure that it will be very different from the life today. My brother David makes some predictions. Here are some of his ideas.
First, people will have less work to do. People will spend most of their time playing sports and traveling. So people will become stronger and healthier, and they will live longer as well.
Second, computers will control the cars and people don’t need to drive. So there will be fewer and fewer traffic accidents on the road. Planes will be very popular, and most people would like to take a plane for their trips. As for robots, they’ll be very popular with human beings. Every family will have a robot. Robots will do dangerous and heavy work for people.
Third, people will be able to live in the sea, on the moon or on other planets. The earth won’t be crowded or noisy any more. So there will be much space for people to plant trees. There will be less pollution, and the air will become much fresher.
Finally, water shortage (短缺) will become one of the most serious problems. If we don’t save water now, people will start wars for water in 100 years.

How many of you like to buy a hamburger for lunch or eat some cookies between classes? But remember to have a look, is there any trans fatty acid (反式脂肪酸)?
People make trans fatty acids by adding hydrogen (氢) to vegetable oil (油). If the food has trans fatty acids, it will taste more delicious and be kept for a longer time.
However, research finds that trans fatty acids are very unhealthy. Many countries, such as Denmark, have stopped the use of trans fatty acids. The US also makes law about it. There is no such a rule in China. It is mainly because Chinese diets have much fewer trans fatty acids than those in the West, according to food safety experts.
But young people should be careful, because cakes and cookies often have trans fatty acids. Some fast food restaurants also use oil with trans fatty acids to fry because they make food last longer.
In recent years, many food companies have started to use fewer trans fatty acids. For example, KFC in China said in 2006 that their food had no trans fatty acids.
How many trans fatty acids are safe for people? The World Health Organization says that a grown-up should eat no more than l% of his diet a day. If people take 5 grams of trans fatty acids a day, the risk of heart disease will increase by 25%.

Most people drink tea in the world. But tea does not mean the same thing to different people. In different countries, people have different ideas about drinking tea.
In China, for example, tea is often served when people get together. Chinese people drink it at home or in teahouses at any time of the day. They often use hot water to boil (煮) tea leaves.
Tea is also important in other Asian countries. People in these countries have a special way of serving tea. They hold a tea ceremony (仪式) in their houses when important guests come. It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in their houses.
In the United States, people usually drink tea at breakfast or they drink it after meals. Americans usually use tea bags to make tea. This way is faster and easier than the way of making tea in teapots. In summer, most Americans drink iced tea. They like to put some ice in their tea.

A party is a good way to have fun and get to know the people around you. Americans like to have different kinds of parties, such as birthday parties, surprise parties, tea parties and house-warming parties. Now pajama (睡衣) parties are one of the most popular kinds of parties in the US. If the weather is nice, many people like to have the party outside. However, at a pajama party, a group of friends spend the night at a person’s house. It is a great way for children or teenagers to get together and have a good time. To hold a pajama party, the host (主人) needs to plan some fun activities, such as watching moves, playing board games or video games and so on. He or she should also prepare some delicious snacks and popular food like pizza. Guests at a pajama party should bring their own pajamas, toothbrushes, pillows and blankets. But if they forget something, they don’t need to worry. Because the host will give them what they need.
While a pajama party is mainly for fun, a prom (毕业舞会) is no doubt a very important thing in most American schools. A prom is a formal dance party that is held at a high school. The party is usually held near the end of the senior year, so it is often called graduation dance. Students should wear formal clothes at the prom. A Prom Queen and a Prom King may, also be crowned at many schools' proms.

Asking people to a party is an art. You must think about what kind of party you’re going to have first. If it is a small party you can just give a call to your friends and ask them to the party. You can even e-mail them or just leave a message for them.
Now, calling someone is an art too. First, give a call to your friend, and then begin the talk by asking them about their life and family. Ask them about their schedules on the day of the party. If they say they are free you can ask them to the party directly (直接地). If the friend is not free then ask him to try to find time for your party.
If you’re going to have a big party, and need to ask lots of people to your party, you must decide how many people you want at your party. Then you can write a list of them and send them beautiful invitation cards, because you may not have so much time to give them a call each. You must send the cards a few days before the party so that they can have enough time to prepare for it.

I’m Dr. Martin. A few days ago, I made a survey (调查) on children in Shanghai. The result shows that 18% of the young students in Shanghai have mental (心理的) problems. They often have a lot of worries and feel very unhappy. Some students feel worried because they have problems with their schoolwork. Others have problems getting on well with their parents or classmates. Here are two examples of them. Su Mei, a 14-year-old school girl, is very afraid of exams. Though she studies the hardest in her class, she can’t pass the exams. She can’t think of anything while she is having an exam. Now she is so worried about the coming exam that she can’t fall asleep for days.
Lucy is a middle school student who comes from a poor family. She does well in her studies. But she doesn’t have enough money to buy beautiful clothes and
