Target Language (1) Words and expressions: distinguish, case, occasionally, teenager, confidence, temper, introduce, decision, either, miserable, unchangeable, blame, suffering, (2) Phrases: distinguish between, at a loss, fall into a …habit, relate to, be involved in, anything like that, gain weight, lose confidence in, have trouble in, make a decision, live a miserable life, be careful of, make the difference (3) Sentences: I think it is hard for a teenager to find someone to relate to. If I were you, I would give it up easily within two weeks. 2. Language Skills (1) Help students to improve the reading ability by finding out details of the text. (2) Help students to write a short paragraph with they have learned about friends and friendship. 3. Emotional targets Students will learn how to make a proper choice when making friends. l Teaching Procedures Step 1: Check homework 1. Ask some students to tell the class what they think of the following saying about friendship. ² A man should keep his friendship in constant repair. 只有经常“浇灌”,方能保持友谊天长地久。 ² Be slow in choosing a friend, slower in changing. 择友要慎重,弃友更要慎重。 ² Don't try to win a friend by presenting gifts. You should instead contribute your sincere love and learn how to win others' heart through appropriate ways. 不要靠馈赠获得朋友,你必须奉献你诚挚的爱,学会怎样用正当的方法赢得别人的心。 2. Ask students to add some sayings on friendship. ² A life without a friend is a life without a sun. 人生没有了朋友就犹如失去了阳光。 ² A friend is a second self. 朋友是第二个自我。 ² Both together do best of all. 二人同心,无往不胜。 Step 2: Lead in Guess: Look at the title of the text. What do you think the choices that are made in the text are? What choices do you usually make in everyday life? Step 3: First Reading Task 1: Read the text quickly. What is the main idea of the text? Key: It is very important to make a right choice while making friends. Task 2: Decide whether the following statements are true or false. 1. People often make wrong choices. 2. Choosing good friends is not easy for middle school students. 3. The writer began to lose his temper easily because he did not have friends. 4. As an adult, the writer has already given up taking drugs and drinking alcohol. 5. From the text, we know that a bad friend will have a bad effect on our life. Key: 1. T 2. T 3. F 4. F 5. T Step 4: Second Reading Task: Read the text again and answer the following questions. 1. What is the difficult thing for us to do? 2. Why did the writer go to a new family? 3. Who introduced the writer to drugs and alcohol? 4. Does the writer think it easy to give up drugs and alcohol? 5. What are the writer’s suggestions on making friends? Key: 1. The difficult thing for us to do is to decide the right thing. 2. The writer went to a new family because his parents wanted the family to help him out of a problem. 3. The two children in this family introduced the writer to drugs and alcohol. 4. No, he doesn’t. 5. The writer suggested that we should be careful of the friends we choose and be careful of the choices we make in life. Step 5: Oral practice Discuss the following questions in groups. 1. What friends are good friends? 2. How do you make friends? 3. What should you be careful about? Step 6: Writing Write paragraph about making friends and keeping friendship. The main ideas in the above questions should be included. A sample: Friendship is one of the greatest pleasures that people can enjoy. It is very difficult to find a better definition of friendship. They help each other when they are in trouble, and cheer each other up when they are sad. The most important thing is that a friend always understands you. In conclusion, when you have made a good friend, don’t forget him or her. She doesn’t relate very well to her mother. 她和她母亲关系不太融洽。 4. be involved in涉及到(包含于) This country was involved in war. 这个国家卷入战争。 She was involved in working out a puzzle. 她在聚精会神地解一道难题。 5. introduce 介绍 She introduced me to her friend. 她把我介绍给她的朋友。 6. if I hadn’t made such friends, what would have been of my life? 本句是与过去事实相反的虚拟语气。与过去事实相反的虚拟语气的形式为: 条件从句 主句 过去完成时 should / would / could / might have +过去分词 例如:if he had come yesterday, I would have told him about it. 如果他昨天来的话,我会把这件事告诉他的。 含义:He did not come yesterday, so I did not tell him about it. 7. If I were you, I would give it up easily within two weeks. 条件从句 主句 一般过去时(be用were) should / would / could / might +动词原形 例如:If they were here, they would help you. 如果他们在这儿,会帮助你的。 含义:They are not here, so they can’t help you. 8. be careful of 当心 We must be careful of public property. 我们必须爱护公共财物。 Be careful of what you are doing. 注意你的所作所为。 辨析:be careful about 讲究;小心;当心 She is too careful about her dress. 她过分讲究衣着。 Be careful about what you say. 要当心你说的话。 9. make the difference 区别对待,起(重要)作用,有影响make a / no / some difference 对某人(某事物)有(没有,有一些)作用或影响 The rain didn’t make much difference to the game. 这场雨对比赛没多大影响。 Step 8: Exercises 1.
