I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. get a general idea of what New York is like;
2. use the new words and phrases correctly;
3. give a brief introduction to New York.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: guide, Asia, Africa, Europe, America, world-famous, trade, southern, international, huge, island, several, relax, hard, so much for sth., bottom, pick, play, website
2. New structures: Wall Street, the world-famous trade centre, is here at the southern end of Manhattan Island.
It’s exciting to see the huge glass ball falling through the darkness!
With several lakes, hills and a large green pawn, it’s a good place to relax after a hard day’s work.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
1. To give a brief introduction to New York.
2. To use the new words and phrases correctly.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Be prepared to go to New York
T: Life is a journey. Today we’ll visit one of the biggest cities in the world, New York. Would you show me around the city?
2. Learn to use the word “pick”

Step 2 Presentation
1. The journey to New York
T: Where is New York? It is in North America. It is in the northwest of the USA.
T: What attractions will you show the visitors around? You can show them around Wall Street, Times Square, Central Park and Broadway.

2. Visiting Wall Street
T: First, we’ll go to Wall Street. Here we can experience the world-famous trade centre. It is at the southern end of Manhattan Island.
Here is a map of China. Where is Inner Mongolia? It is in the northern part of China. Where is Yunnan? It is in the southern part of China. It is also at the bottom of the map. Where is Xinjiang? It is in the northwest of China.
T: Wall Street is famous for the international banks. In the word “international”, “nation” means “country”; the prefix “inter” means “among”; the suffix “al” means “of”.
Brainstorming: Words with prefixes; words with suffixes.
Exercise: Complete the sentences with the correct forms of the words in the brackets.

3. Visiting Times Square
T: Next, let’s go to the Times Square. On New Year’s Eve, people gather in the square. It’s exciting to see the huge glass balls falling through the darkness.
(1) Differences between big, large, little, small and huge.
(2) Group discussion: What safety tips should we know when attending some big events? Use the structures and phrases provided.

4. Visiting Central Park
T: Here is Central Park. It is made up of several lakes, hills and a large green lawn.
(1) Pair work: What can we do in Central Park?
(2) Exercise: Translate the sentences into English.

5. Visiting Broadway
T: Broadway is famous for theatres in the world. Here, you can enjoy the famous musical Cats. It is a play filled with many beautiful songs. You can hear the famous song “Memory”. In fact, Broadway has been famous for its theatres since the early twentieth century.
(1) Use the correct prepositions to fill in the blanks.
(2) The usage of “since” and “for” in the present perfect tense.
Exercise: Complete the sentences with the correct forms of the words in the brackets.

Make an introduction
T: OK, we’ve learnt a lot about New York. Who would like to give a brief introduction to the city? You can use the mind map on the screen to help you.

V. Homework
1. Review the important language points.
2. Write a report about New York and exchange it with your classmates.
