1. Global warming is the most serious problem we face in the 21st century. Most scientists have been saying that human activity, not natural factors, is the primary cause of the warming. Many people, both in China and abroad have realized that while we are developing the world, we are also destroying the land on which we are living. We see garbage sometimes thrown into streams that supply drinking water. We find forest fires caused by careless people. Beaches and city streets are littered with rubbish.

2. The more beautiful cars are produced, the more gases are poured into the air. More and more tall buildings are being built, but the waste from the factories has polluted the water, and the gases from the factories have poisoned the air. All of this pollution produces a lot of carbon dioxide which prevents heat from escaping.

Yesterday the police were joined by more than 20 volunteers in the continuing search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones. The police said that they had disappeared during an adventure (冒险) tour of Cape York Peninsula.
This was the second day of the search and the police were now very worried about the safety of the three missing people.
The police said that the search had covered a wide area, but the rainforest was thick and their work was made harder by the recent rain. Later on Chief Inspector (警官) Roger Fleet said, “The travellers had a radio with them. If they had been in trouble, they would have called us.”
The three travellers left Cooktown very early on Saturday morning in a Toyota car. They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles (鳄鱼). Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down? There’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets（布景） in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies(公司) in the USA.

New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don’t need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.
But Hollywood is fighting back. The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry.
