My Hometown’s Market
By QinZhouwei
At the centre of our town lies a big parterre, the intersection of Yudai Street and Yanhe Street. And those two streets form our town’s major market .Although no name, the market is closed associated with our daily life. So what it sells but what it is named is significant for us.
Every morning, at 5:30—6:00,farm produce fair in the southern part of Yanhe Street begins to work and 7:00—8:00 is the busiest time. At that time, besides farm produce fair, breakfast shops, occupied the eastern part of Yudai Street, also have their nice time. However the eastern part of Yudai Street is less as a market more as a residential quarter and could be just related to business in the morning.
That the western part of Yudai Street becomes crowded should be in the afternoon. Go along the street, there are almost clothing stores, big or small, for women or for men. Of course, you also can get hats, shoes and other wearing.
The last part of the market is my favorite place. The northern part of Yanhe Street is mostly occupied with bookstores and barbershops. And you also could uncle Wang’s Toy shop, aunt Zhao’s Make-up store, uncle Zhang’s Repairing store, and so on. My uncle’s bookstore SanWeiShuZai also lies there. Referring to the name of the bookstore, you may recall LuXun’s essay From BaiCaoYuan to SanWeiShuWu. LuXun is my uncle’s favorite writer and thinker, so you can find all of LuXun’s works on the second floor. Besides LuXun’s works, there are many other kinds of books like most other bookstore for example, books about history, science, literature, art, music and so on. On the first floor, there are textbooks and stationery to sell. Sometimes, I would help my uncle run his bookstore, so I had to learn how to meet customer’s need, and I should say “what can I do for you?” with smile when customers came in and “see you next time” still smiling when they left. It’s not bad experience in my childhood. When I was a child, I often came with my mother to the farm produce fair to buy cooking material of a whole day for our family on weekends. Then mom would send me to my uncle’s bookstore and she had to be busy with her housework. So I would kill my day by staying at the second floor for reading fairy tales or going downstairs to seek textbooks to finish my homework.
The deepest memory of my childhood is the travel to the farm produce fair with my mom and the days spent on uncle’s bookstore.
