According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention(CDCP)(疾病预防控制中心), if you don’t often wash your hands, you can pick up viruses(病毒) from many places and make yourself ill. You’re at risk(危险) every time you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. In fact, one of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing(揉) their noses or their eyes when there are cold viruses on their hands. If you don’t often wash your hands, especially when you’re sick, you may spread the viruses directly to others. You should wash your hands in the following situations:
◇after using the bathroom;
◇after blowing your nose or coughing;
◇before eating, serving or preparing food;
◇after touching pets or other animals;
◇after visiting anyone who is sick;
◇when your hands are dirty.
There’s a right way to wash your hands. Follow these simple steps to keep your hands clean: use warm water(not cold or hot); wash for 15 seconds; rinse(冲洗) your hands well in warm running water and dry them with a clean towel.

I’ve got some information for everyone going to Britain next month. As you know, you’ll be staying with a family for two weeks. Now the most important thing is money. You should take about £30 in cash(现金) and about £200 in travelers cheques (支票). Then when you arrive at the airport you’ll be met by our host(主人) family. You must remember to wear a red shirt so the family will find you easily. I’ve told them to look out for the red shirts. You’ll also need to take with you 4 photos of yourself and, of course, it’s very important that you take the school letter. While you are there, if you have any problems, you can call our agent(代理人). I’ll give you her office phone number now: It’s 580-4436 and the person to ask for is Mrs. Belcher, that’s B-E-L-C-H-E-R. She’s in the office from 9-5 every day. OK! That’s everything. Have a good trip.

In junior middle school, kids study English writing, maths, science, and so on. At noon, the students eat lunch at school. The usual lunch is meat, vegetables, fruit, bread and a drink. However, students prefer pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers with a soda to drink. American children like sugar, and after the meal they can have a small piece of cake or a cookie. Students don’t sleep for a short time in the afternoon. After lunch, they don’t begin classes again until 3 o’clock. They go to school on weekdays and take classes for six hours each day and then return home.
Parents allow their kids to play or watch TV until supper at 6 p.m. After supper, they do their homework. Sometimes there is a family activity where children can be with both parents after dinner. Saturdays and Sundays are kids’ free days. They can do what they want to do at home.

What do you think of the most important inventions in the world? The TV? The printing? The telephone? Or the computer? A report shows that they are not the only important inventions. Here are three other important inventions.
One of the simplest inventions is the toilet. Before toilets, waste ran into rivers from people’s houses. Illnesses were common in big cities, and it was often difficult to find clean drinking water.
Animal food is another important invention. Before the invention, most animals were killed every autumn because there was not enough food for them in winter. After hay became a kind of common animal food, animals could live through the long winter.
The third great invention is glasses. Glasses help people read, write and do “close work” after the age of forty-five. Without glasses, the world would be difficult for the people above forty-five.

The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also want their children to take extra-curriculum activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is, so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children's skills vary; they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well--cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence.
An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him curious and arouse his interest. If he will spend hours looking at it, and try to mend it; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. Such activities do more than teach a child to read a book; but rather they teach them to think, and to use their minds. This is much more important than learning by reading a book.

It was already late when we started going to the next town. It was about 15 miles away on the other side of the hill. There we felt sure that we would find a bed for the night. Darkness fell along the narrow road to the hill. As se climbed higher, it became colder and rain began to fall. It was difficult at times to see the road, so I asked my friend John to drive slowly.
We traveled for about 20 miles but we couldn’t find the town. We were beginning to feel worried. Then the car stopped. We found that we were out of petrol (汽油), so we decided to spend the night in the car.
After eating some bread, I tried to go to sleep at once, but John, a poor sleeper, got out of the car after a few minutes and went for a walk up the hill. Soon, he came running back. From the top of the hill he saw the lights of the town in the valley below. At once, we tried to push the car to the top of the hill. In less than an hour we were in the town, and we found a hotel there easily.
