Procedures
Warming up by learning about the grammar focus
Turn to page 77, and look at the grammar focus.
How is the Past Perfect formed?
By the time she got up, her brother had already gone into the bathroom.
By the time she went outside, the bus had already gone.
By the time she got to class, the teacher had already started teaching.
When she got to school, she realized she had left her backpack at home.
FORM: Past Perfect
[HAD] + [PAST PARTICIPLE]
Examples:
I had studied a little English when I came to the U.S.
They had never met an American until they met John.
Use 1: Completed Action Before Something in Past
The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.
EXAMPLES:
I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.
Had you ever visited the U.S. before your trip in 1992?
Yes, I had been to the U.S. once before in 1988.
Use 2: Duration Before Something in the Past (Non-continuous Verbs)
With Non-progressive Verbs and some non-progressive uses of Mixed Verbs, we use the Past Perfect to show that something started in the past and continued up until another action in the past.
EXAMPLES:
We had had that car for ten years before it broke down.
By the time Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for over eight years.

Tapescript
Boy: Hi, Tina. You look stressed out.
Girl: I had a bad morning.
Boy: Really? What happened?
Girl: Well, first of all I overslept. By the time I got up, my brother had already gotten in the shower.
Boy: Oh, what a pain!
Girl: So, after he got out of the shower, I took a quick shower and got dressed. But by the time I went outside, the bus had already left.
Boy: Oh, no!
Girl: Oh, yes! So I ran all the way to school. But when I got to school, I realized I had left my backpack at home.
Boy: No wonder you look stressed out.
After you listen to the tape complete the sentences in the box on page 76.
1. By the time I got up, my brother had already gotten in the shower.
2. By the time I got outside, the bus had already left.
3. When I got to school, I realized I had left my backpack at home.

Tapescript
Boy: So then what did you do, Tina?
Girl: Well, I ran home to get my backpack. But when I got home, I realized I had left my keys in the backpack.
Boy: You’re kidding!
Girl: So I ran back to school without my keys or my backpack. And by the time I got back to school, the bell had rung.
Boy: Oh, no!
Girl: And by the time I walked into class, the teacher had started teaching already. She asked for our homework, but of course I didn’t have it.
Key:
3: I walked into class.
1: I realized I had left my keys in the backpack.
2: I ran back to school without my keys or my backpack.
4: The teacher had started teaching already.
2b Filling and listening
On page 77 there’s a box. In it there are three sentences. Read them and fill in the blanks with the correct verb forms.
When I got home, I realized I had left my keys in the backpack.
By the time I got back to school, the bell had rung.
By the time I walked into class, the teacher had started teaching already.
2c Doing pairwork
In pairs you are going to make up an ending for the story and share it with the other pairs.
The teacher looked at Tina and asked why she looked stressed out. Tina told her that she had a bad morning. The teacher asked what had happened. Tina said that first of all she had overslept. By the time she got up, her brother had already gotten in the shower. Tina continued that after her brother got out of the shower, she took a quick shower and got dressed. But by the time she went outside, the bus had already left. The teacher asked what Tina did then. Tina told the teacher that she ran all the way to school. But when she got to school, she realized she had left her backpack at home. And the teacher realized why Tina looked stressed out. The teacher wanted to know what Tina did then. Tina answered that she ran home to get her backpack. But when she got home, she realized she had left my keys in the backpack. So she ran back to school without her keys or her backpack. And by the time she got back to school, the bell had rung. When Tina walked into class, the teacher had started teaching already. Then the teacher asked for their homework, but of course Tina didn’t have it.
3a Reading and writing
On page 78 is a story about a school student. Read it aloud to the tape, underlining all the expressions and circling the uses of past perfect.
I’ve never been late for school, but yesterday I came very close. My alarm clock didn’t go off, and by the time I woke up, my father had already gone into the bathroom and I had to wait for him to come out. I had to really rush. I took a quick shower, and had some breakfast, and then ran off to the bus stop. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, the bus had already left. I started walking, but I knew I couldn’t get to school on time. Luckily, my friend Tony and his dad came by in his dad’s car and they gave me a ride. When I got to school, the final bell was ringing. I only just made it to my class.
Now you are going to list the events in the correct order.
1. wake up late 2. go into the bathroom 3. wait for him to come
out 4. have to really rush 5. take a quick shower 6. have some breakfast 7. run off to the bus stop 8. bus left 9. start walking 10. get to school on time 11. come by in his dad’s car 12. give me a ride 13. bell ringing 14. make it to my class
