Step I Revision
T: In the last lesson we read the passage Zhalong, a special place, and learned much about it. Now, can you tell me something about it? Wang Feng, you try, please.
S: Zhalong, a special place, means Zhalong Nature Reserve. It lies in the west of Heilongjiang province. It is a vast expanse of Wetland in the world, and there are rich fish and wildlife. It is an ideal living area for the rare red-crowned cranes, and other seabirds. There are more than 200 kinds of birds there, and especially the red-crowned cranes stand out. The study and protection of the red-crowned cranes has been very successful so far.
T: Well done. We couldn’t think of Zhalong without the red-crowned cranes. Yesterday I asked you to use a library or the Internet to find out more about World Wetlands Day. Who’d like to say something about it?
S: In order to help people to understand the importance of protecting Wetlands, February 2nd was made World Wetlands Day in 1996. Wetland just like woods and oceans is called ecosystems of the earth. Wetland not only provides food and shelter for wildlife, it but also plays an important part in keeping the balance of nature.
T: Nice work. Today let’s come to vocabulary.
Step II Word formation
This activity leads to the new grammar – prefix.
1. Use an adjective and its opposite to make a sentence in class
e.g. Wetland is a countable noun, but it is usually used as an uncountable noun.
Write “countable” and “uncountable” on the black board. Tell Ss about the word formation. We can change the meaning by adding a prefix. Adding the prefixes dis-, im-, in-, ir-, or un- to an adjective will express the opposite meaning of the word.
2. Let’s the students guess some meanings of the underlined words in the sentences on the screen.
1) If you tell the truth, you are honest. If you tell a lie, you are dishonest.
2) If someone shows good manners to others, he is a polite person. If not, he is impolite.
3) His answer is correct, while mine is incorrect.
4) The new chair is comfortable to sit in, while the old one is uncomfortable.
5) It is necessary for us to get more information about Zhalong, so it is not unnecessary.
6) It is important to take action to protect wildlife, so it is not unimportant.
7) A sparrow is a common bird, but the red crowned crane is an uncommon bird.
8) If we have enough time, it will be regular for us to do a bird count. If not, it will be irregular.
Write the pair words on the Bb. for Ss to watch carefully and guess the meanings of the sentences.
