Lesson 9: China’s Most Famous “Farmer” Title Lesson 9: China’s Most Famous “Farmer” Teaching aims Knowledge By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to read, understand and use the new words and phrases e.g. introduction, leader, produce, together with, since then. Ability 1. To be able to talk about great people and their lives 2. To use their imagination boldly and talk about their inventions. Emotion To encourage them to have a great dream and work hard for it Teaching difficult points and important points To use the new words and phrases to talk about great people and their lives and their inventions. Teaching tools PPT, radio Teacher’s activities Students ’activities Aims Step1: Warm up 1. Show some pictures and teach new words and phrases in the lesson. Learn new words and phrases in the lesson. To motivate the Ss and prepare for the new lesson. Step2:Lead-in 1.Ask: 1) Did you have a dream when you were a child? What was it? 2) Do you think great people work all the time and have no other interests at all? 2. Play the audiotape for the last paragraph. Discuss the questions in every group. The Ss Listen and circle the hobby about Yuan Longping that is NOT mentioned in the lesson. To motivate the Ss and lead in the new concept. Step3: New Concept 1. Play the audiotape for the lesson. 2. Read the lesson and write true (T) or false (F). 1) He grew a new type of rice as a child. ( ) 2) He had an idea for hybrid rice in the 1960s. ( ) 3) He studied agriculture at university. ( ) 4) He is working hard on developing super hybrid rice now. ( ) 5) He plays the violin for half an hour before he goes to bed. ( ) 3. Read the lesson again and fill in the blanks. Listen and read after the tape. Read the lesson and finish the exercises. The Ss complete the exercise independently and then discuss the answers in groups. Step 4: Retelling Show some key words and help the Ss to retell the text. Retell the text in groups. To practice their speaking abilities. Step 5: Exercise Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in the box. The Ss try to fill in the blanks with the words and phrases in the lesson. To check if they grasp the main words and phrases in the lesson. Step 5: Group Work 1. Show a picture about the interesting inventions. 2. Talk about an invention to make life better with their group members. Discuss it in groups and choose some of them to talk in class. To give Ss time to practice their speaking abilities. Step6: Writing Ask the Ss to write a short passage about their invention. . Write a short passage about their inventions. To give Ss time to practice their writing abilities. Home-work 1. Finish off the exercises in the lesson. 2. Copy your passage on the exercise book.
