Step One : Lead-in.
Read the explanation at the top of page 58 aloud. Make sure that students understand the concept of idioms. Encourage students to ask questions if they are unsure of.

Step Two: Presentation.
1. Ask students to read the sentences in the box and find out what
these sentences mean. Then ask students to work in pairs and match the
meanings with the correct idioms. Encourage students to ask questions if they are unsure of anything.
2. Review some phrases:
a. be involved in
e.g. It’ said that he has involved in the case.
b. be close to
e.g. Our teachers are close to us.
c. in power
d. be absent
e.g. He is absent without excuse. (他无故旷课。)
He is absent from school.
(他旷课了。)
Read the sentences in the box and find out what these
sentences mean.
Then work in pairs
and match the
meanings with the
correct idioms.
Understand the phrases and try to make sentences with
them.
To present the explanations of the idioms so that students can guess the meanings of them easily.
Step Three: Learning and reading.
1. Check answers as a class. Ask one student at a time to read out one idiom and its meaning. Listen for mistakes and mispronunciation.
2. Explain: on the other side

Ask more able students to think of Chinese idioms which have similar meanings to those on pages 58 and
