Planning a holiday for your family
Teaching aim
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to
1. recognize dates and place names
2. understand the travel information in leaflets
3. develop the ability of how to make a family travel plan
4. write an informal email to family members
Teaching steps
I. Introductory
It is getting colder and colder now. The temperature today is only 4 degrees. I can’t believe it’s already in winter. On my way here, my eyes were filled with pretty falling leaves. If it is not raining now, the scenery will be very breathtaking. A lot of people will go to some famous vacation spots and enjoy their vacation. Speaking of vacation, have you ever thought about making a travel plan for your family?
II. Brainstorming --- traveling preparation
First, write down your answer on the paper and later we will have a little competition to see which group tells me the most answer. If you want to answer the question, just put up your paper. Each color stands for a group,I hope that your group will win.
1. What is the most important question that people always ask themselves?

2. Your destination actually depends on something. What is it?
Time/ money.
3. If your time is limited, you really have to think about how to get to the destination faster. What is it?
Transportation
4. If you fly to the destination, you will have to worry about the money you are going to spend, right?
Cost
5. Once you get to the destination, what is usually the first place to go to?
Accommodation
6. After you leave your bags behind, what will you do?
Go to the vacation spots, sights or places of interest.
7. When you get hungry, you will find a place to try some food.
Local food
8. What type of trip is it? Is it just a trip for shopping? Is it a trip to gain more knowledge? Is it a trip to experience the traditional way of life in some place?

III. Reading + Listening
Task1 Reading leaflet 1 Hunan Province
Objective: Read travel leaflets.
Form: 1. Divide the class in two groups. Have one student raise questions and another one from the other group answer the question.
2. The class read the leaflet and find the answers in the reading material.
Plan A Student A from Group A asks a question.
Student B from Group B gives an answer.
Plan B The teacher asks a question.
Students take turns to answer the questions.
1. What is the destination of this place?
2. What is the length of the trip? How did you find out?
3. What is the tourist sight we will be visiting on the first day?
3. What are we going to do there?
4. How are we going to Fenghuagn?
5. What can we do there?
6. What activity can we enjoy on the third day?
7. What is white-water rafting?
8. Where can we enjoy the beauty of nature?
9. What is the plan for the last day?
10. *Why do you think this trip is an adventure? Does it look like an adventure to you?
Task 2 Listening leaflet 1
Objective Obtain information from listening material
Form Blank-filling exercise on a handout.
Have the students read out the answer together.
1. What kind of information have you got from the tape?
The information about why the places in Hunan are worth visiting.
2. Would you like to make up your mind to pay a visit to Hunan or do you want to have some other information?
Task 3 Reading leaflet 2
Objective Find out the information through communication
Form: 1. Have two students who know Shandong province very well answer some questions about this place.
2. The class read the leaflet and raise questions according to the reading material.
Plan A Student A from Group A comes to the front with Student B from Group B. Two of them raise questions to get answers. Retell if possible.
Plan B Student A and B come to the front. The rest of the class read the material and ask them questions.
[1] Student : What is the name of the most famous spring in Shandong?
Expert: It’s called Baotu Spring.
[2] Student: What is the most famous river that goes through this province?
Expert: It’s the Yellow River.
[3] Student: What is the highest mountain in the province?
Expert: It’s Mount Tai.
[4] Student: What is the best activity that we can do on top of Mount Tai?
Expert: We can watch the sunrise on top of the mountain.
[5] Student: How about Qufu, what kind of place is Qufu?
Expert: It’s the place where Confucius was born and buried.
Task 4: Listening leaflet 2
Objective: Find out more information from the listening material.
Form: Blank-filling exercise on a handout.
Ask follow-up questions.
IV. Speaking
Task Plan your family trip.
Objective Work on your own about the ideal destination for my family
Make a presentation on your plan.
Have the whole class raise questions about the trip as family members and finally vote for the better plan.
The two trips both sound fun and exciting. I definitely want to pay a visit. Everybody has his or her dream place. Maybe it’s the place you have already been to. Maybe it’s the place you have heard about and always dreamed about. Now it’s your great chance to plan a trip for your family. If you turn to the back of the handout, you will find a table there. Fill in the information and be a good planner. When you finish, I will invite two students to come up here and introduce your plan to everyone.

2. Content
You can follow the example here.
All you need to write is where you will be visiting, what you will do there and why
you should be going there.
3. Presentation
Four people work in a group. You are family members now. Decide which place you would like to go. Three students will write the plan for the three days, the last student will come to the front to report.

Objective Writing an informal letter.

Traveling means a lot to us. If you have a fun and unforgettable trip, I am sure both
your body and mind will be greatly relaxed and you will forget about the stress and
pressure. The opportunity of traveling is an enormous gift that everybody should learn
to cherish.
