Maybe you were standing by a door or in a hallway and you heard people talking about someone else. You paused ... you perked up your ears ... and you listened. These people were not speaking to you. You eavesdropped. To eavesdrop means you secretly listen to something said in private. Nosy people, people who like to gossip and spies are all good eavesdroppers. When it was first used in the 1600s, "eavesdrop" was the water that fell, or dropped, from the eaves of a house. After even more time passed, "eavesdropper" described someone who stood near a house to secretly listen to a conversation happening inside. English has another expression related to eavesdropping and the home: the walls have ears. This means be careful what you say as there might be people listening. Some word experts say this expression may come from story about an ancient Greek ruler who had an ear-shaped cave cut and connected between the rooms of his palace. This form of eavesdropping became common practice with rulers from many cultures. There’s a great one more for eavesdropping – to listen in on. When you listen in on something, you listen to people speaking without joining in, usually secretly. But not always. You can listen in on a class at university or listen in on a meeting at work. These examples do not suggest that you were listening secretly. Now, maybe you were minding your own business. Maybe you just happened to have overheard a private conversation. Overhearing is more innocent than eavesdropping. You can overhear something by being in the wrong place at the right time. 1、How many expressions are mentioned on listening in different ways? A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6. 2、Which is TRUE about the word of “eavesdrop”? A.It means the fallen water from a house now. B.It was first used in 1600 in ancient Greece. C.Rulers seldom eavesdrop in many cultures. D.It didn’t originally mean “to listen secretly”. 3、Which word or phrase means to listen to something by coincidence? A.Eavesdrop. B.Listen in on. C.Overhear. D.The walls have ears. 4、What can we learn from the passage? A.Overhear and eavesdrop take on the same meaning. B.A gossip or a spy is good at eavesdropping. C.The walls have ears means be careful when listening. D.“Listen in on” always means listen secretly. 22.(8分)Dec 11, 2016 marked the 15th anniversary of China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Now the country has grown into the world's second-largest economy and the largest trading country, while millions Chinese have been lifted out of poverty. And 15 years on, being a WTO member has transformed the nation s everyday lives for the better. Imports are now a common sight in Chinese stores and supermarkets, while they were previously rarely seen on shelves. The Chinese now have access to many imports varying from luxury goods like high-end cars and famous brand watches to daily necessities like vegetables and fruits. China’s WTO membership has also made imports less expensive for the Chinese public. For instance, since 2005, no tariffs (关税)have been charged on Chinese imports of digital cameras and video games, along with other devices. This has made them less expensive. Chinese education industry has also benefited from China’s WTO membership. Many top global universities have joined forces with Chinese ones to establish cooperative education institutions, bringing foreign teaching concepts to Chinese students. For example, New York University Shanghai was jointly founded by New York University and East China Normal University. In addition, an increasing number of Chinese students are furthering their studies abroad. According to the Ministry of ducation , 523,700 students studied overseas last year, and the number is expected to continue growing this year. China's WTO entry has brought benefits not only to the country’s people, but also to the rest of the world. However, some drawbacks also come along with the membership. Since 2005 many Chinese have been unemployed in many fields, which results in some social problems. 1、What do we know about WTO? A.It focuses on wiping out poverty. B.It accepted China as a member in 2001. C.It celebrated China’s entry into WTO last year D.It has turned China into the largest trading country. 2、As for Chinese imports, what attract(s) people most? A.Advanced electronic devices. B.High-end cars and famous brand watches. C.No tariffs since the year 2005. D.Their varieties and more reasonable prices. 3、What does the membership bring to Chinese education industry? A.More large campuses. B.Advanced teaching devices. C.Different teaching ideas. D.Increasing foreign students. 4、What does the passage mainly talk about? A.The characteristics of Chinese imports. B.The social problems in the past fifteen years. C.The apparent benefits of China's WTO membership. D.Advantages and disadvantages of China’s WTO membership. 23.(8分) Dolphins, African gray parrots and some other animals understand the idea of “zero,” but researchers were surprised to find that honeybees also comprehend this abstract concept, considering the insects’ tiny brains, according to a new study. Honeybees have fewer than one million neurons (神经元), compared with the 86 billion neurons in humans—and yet, they grasp a concept that humans, by some measures, don’t start to understand before preschool. The researchers set up two cards, each of which had a set of symbols on them, like triangles or circles. Then, they trained a group of the bees to fly to the card with the lower number of symbols. The bees quickly learned what the humans wanted them to do to get their delicious, sweet rewards. The trained bees were then shown a card that was empty and one that had symbols on it. There is no need for the bees to be trained to fly more often to the empty card—thus showing that they understood that “zero” was a number less than the others. Although they flew more often to an empty card than to one that had one symbol on it, it became easier for them to distinguish when the symbols on the card increased in number. For example, they more often flew to the zero when the other card had four symbols than when it had one. Perhaps these findings will explain the brain mechanism (机制) behind what allows us to understand the concept of “nothing,” Adrian Dyer, a researcher said. This understanding, in turn, could help in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that also understands this concept. “If bees can understand ‘zero’ with a brain of less than a million neurons, it suggests there are simple, efficient ways to teach AI new tricks,” Dyer said in the statement. 1、What is a surprising finding for the researchers? A.Many animals also comprehend the meaning of “zero”. B.The number of neurons of honeybees is much smaller. C.Honeybees can understand “zero” with their tiny brains. D.Humans fail to recognize abstract ideas before preschool. 2、What can the bees do without further training? A.Fly directly to the card with more symbols on it. B.Fly less often to the card with fewer symbols on it. C.Fly quite slowly to the card without anything on it. D.Fly more often to the card without any symbol on it. 3、What does Adrian Dyer say about these findings? A.They offer inspiration to the development of technology. B.They enable people to understand more abstract concepts. C.They suggest ways to teach humans some complex tricks. D.They allow people to set a new type of brain mechanism. 4、What is the main idea of the text? A.Honeybees know about the concept of “zero”. B.Honeybees can understand much as humans do. C.Honeybees will help to improve AI in the future. D.Honeybees can be trained to comprehend “zero”. 24.(8分) Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers, desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns. Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough. Harry Morrison, chief executive (主管) of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes: “I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.” Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions (排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted (授予) the standard, they can use a logo (标识) in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. Morrison said. 1、What’s the main idea of the passage? A.Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers. B.Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions. C.Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home. D.Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers, environmental awareness. 2、The underlined word “inform” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”. A.affect B.change C.disturb D.reject 3、According to Harry Morrison, businesses . A.will benefit from cutting carbon emissions B.should buy carbon allowances for shoppers C.are required to make up for their carbon emissions D.have encouraged shoppers to take their custom elsewhere 4、We can learn from the passage that businesses will . A.have a strong desire to reduce costs B.use the same logo in their marketing C.gain advantages by taking early action D.attract more shoppers by storing goods 25.(10分)Joining Us as a Games Volunteer!
