After you have heard each sentence, interpret it into English. Start interpreting at the signal (请翻译) and stop it at the signal (叮咚声). The passage will be read to you TWICE. During the first reading, you may take notes while you are listening. The second reading will be read segment by segment, with intervals of 40 seconds. (请翻译)(间隔20秒)(叮咚声)(以下同) 2) The world is still undergoing complex and profound changes. 3) I feel honored to come here on my first visit to your beautiful city. 4) China’s entry into WTO has caught worldwide attention. 5) E-business has facilitated transactions. 6) Ladies and gentlemen, I’m delighted to meet you on this occasion. 7) Promoting trade and investment liberalization among its members is another important task of APEC. 8) The United States is now the largest developed country in the world, with broad markets and abundant capital. 9) It is wrong to keep China, an economic power, out of the WTO. 10) Of course, we face a big challenge ahead. 11) Some people say that the problem with globalization is that it lacks a “human face”. 12) China’s rapid development and sustained economic growth have caught the attention of investors of around the world. 13) With the Internet, it becomes much easier to provide services of all types, such as education and banking. 14) The World Tourism Organization has forecast that by 2020 China will be the largest tourist receiving country in the world. 15) Effective measures must be taken to protect farmland, grassland and water resources. 16) FIFA (The Federation Internationale de Football Association) was set up in 1904 when the game had spread across the continent of Europe. 17) China is a developing country with the biggest population in the world. 18) On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts planted the first human footsteps on the moon. 19) Shenzhen has best environment for investment and offers most favorable policies for investors. 20) China’s forest coverage is only 12.89 percent, far lower than the world average. 21) China is one of the countries with the most serious desertification problem. 22) Ancient Chinese people used a dozen animals to symbolize the 12 Earthly Branches. 23) China attaches great importance to improving and developing relations with the developed countries. 24) Significant progress has been made in the implementation of the nine-year compulsory education. 25) It is essential to adhere to the principle of mutually beneficial cooperation. 26) As two great nations, China and USA have a special responsibility to the future of the world. 27) In China, primary and secondary education takes 12 years to complete, divided into primary, junior secondary and senior secondary stages. 28) The World Trade Organization, established on January 1, 1995, is an open, non-discriminatory trading system. 29) It established the historical convention of conferring honorific titles on the two Living Buddhas Dalai and Panchen lamas by the Central Government. 30) Economy sets the tune, whereas financial developments interact with economy. 31) The insurance sector undertakes a transferred risk from others and the sector per se has to deal with risk prevention. 32) We should be fully aware of the great strength IT is generating and give a greater impetus to its growth. 33) At the end of 1999, the number of Internet users was 260 million. China is a unified multi-ethnic country. Besides the majority Han Chinese, there are 55 ethnic minorities. China follows the policy that all ethnic groups are equal and all minority ethnic groups enjoy special protection. The people of all minority ethnic groups not only enjoy the same rights offered by China’s Constitution and laws as the Han people, but alos enjoy special rights designated for minority ethnic groups. 4. China would like to establish and develop relations of friendship and cooperation with all countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-Existence, namely, mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence. 5. Since the end of the Cold War, the world has been moving toward multipolarity and the overall international situation toward relaxation.// The maintenance of peace, the pursuit for stability and the promotion of development have become the common aspirations and demands of the people of all countries.//Nevertheless, the harsh reality suggests that the world is far from being tranquil. The Cold War mentality still lingers on. Hegemonism and power politics have manifested themselves in new expressions.//Triggered by ethnic, religious and territorial issues, regional conflicts and disputes keep cropping up one after another.//The disparity between the North and the South has become ever more striking.
