Chinese people around the world celebrate their most important holiday, Chinese New Year. But for one man in Taiwan, Yao Guan Cheng, it's all about business as he washes dirty banknotes for gifts.
According to Chinese tradition, parents give their children clean, fresh banknotes at the start of the New Year. But there is a serious shortage (短缺) of such banknotes as the holiday period draws near, and Yao Guan Cheng noticed that. He thought there might be a good chance to start a business to meet the needs of the market.
"When I first started this money-washing business, it was for family members who liked to collect old precious banknotes. But later on, it hit me that this service would bring convenience to people as they are preparing for the Chinese New Year. It is one of our customs to put banknotes inside little red envelopes in order to bring our children good luck. To do that, people change old notes for new ones at the banks. But here in Taiwan, there are all kinds of rules about how much you can change, what days you can do that and which banks you can go to. That's inconvenient. So I thought: why not give people another choice? If they like, they can just have their old notes washed and cleaned, and they will be as clean as new."
He doesn't just put the notes in water, he uses special chemicals and no one knows what it is. His services don't come cheap, he charges about $10 for washing twenty banknotes. But as there is one month to go before the New Year holiday, he's been very busy, cleaning people's banknotes and in the process, giving a new, clean image (比喻) to the expression 'money laundering' (洗钱).

For many kids in Africa, the colorful PlayPump (踏水车) is the first playground equipment (器材) they’ve ever seen. When they give it a push and jump in for their first ride, smiles of wonder break out on their faces.
The fun of going round and round in a circle is just part of the wonder. This invention doesn’t just change their play-time. It changes their lives.
As the merry-go-round (旋转木马) starts, it pumps (泵送) clean water up from deep underground and keeps it in a huge tank (桶). People are welcome to come and help themselves to the water for free.
In the countryside of Africa, few people drink clean water. They don’t have water equipment in their homes. Instead, they often walk a long way to carry water back.
Patricia Molope, 15, explains that before her South African village got a PlayPump, people would pay a taxi driver to take them to a well far from their homes. "Sometimes the taxi drivers were busy and we would have to stop bathing in order to save water. It was too far to walk there, but now we have our own clean water in our village, and life is better."
The hard job of carrying water usually is done by women and girls. Carrying water for miles, and hours each day is such a big job that it sometimes prevents girls from being able to go to school.
Thanks to the PlayPump, getting water is quick and easy—and even boys join in. The pumps have become a new activity. Kids and adults seem to love playing with them while collecting water.
Twelve-year-old boy Khumalo says, "I have seen many kinds of water pumps, but never one that can keep water. When I grow up, I want to be an inventor so I can invent clever things like the PlayPump that will help my country."
