Beware (当心) of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression.
For example, someone might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"
This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might boast, "Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples (粉刺)." It fails to mention that they only ask ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of deception (欺骗) happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
1. Which statement of the following is true according to the article?
A. Whenever people tell truth, they are really lying.
B. The person saying he won 100 dollars in the example lost 200 dollars in
fact.
C. You can't trust any of the advertisers.
D. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.
2. The underlined word deliberately in the passage probably means ________.
A. by chance B. in brief C. on purpose D. with care
3. The author clearly wants people ________.
A. to think carefully about what they read and hear
B. not to treat pimples on their noses
C. never to trust anyone
D. to beware of doctors
4. The appropriate title for this passage would be _________.
A. Life Is a Lottery B. Everyone Lies
C. Lying with the Truth D. Nose Pimples

There was no improvement in air quality in Shanghai last week which stayed in class 3, meaning the air was lightly polluted, according to the report from the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Centre.
The average Air Pollution Index (指数) for sulphur dioxide (二氧化碳) and total suspended particles (微粒) (TSP) remained almost unchanged last week from the previous week but the API for nitrogen oxide (氧化碳) went up 19 per cent.
Nitrogen oxide, caused by the burning of cooking gas and vehicle exhaust (排气管) fumes, was still the main pollutant.
The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Centre now operates six automatic air monitors in the city's Putto, Yangpu, Luwan, Hongkou, Jing'an and Xuhui districts.
Data is collected every 30 minutes and a daily report is released every day after lunch.

Have you ever seen a real night sky that looks like van Gogh's Stary Night? I hope not! So why would an artist paint the sky this way? Perhaps I can answer that with another question. When you're happy, why do you sing instead of speaking? Or when you're in love, why do you speak of roses and honey? When we do these things, we, too are artists. We're using something that goes beyond a mere scientific description in order to communicate our feeling more powerful than straightforward words can. So consider for a moment that van Gogh might not have been hallucinating (产生幻觉) on the night he painted this. Maybe he felt something so powerful that he had to go beyond the familiar to express it.
I hope I'm reminding you of something you already know as I describe the experience of being outside at night under a crystal clear sky that makes everything seem clean and refreshing. So you look up. And suddenly you see the sky that you've seldom seen before. It's not just the same old dark night sky tonight. Instead, the blackness is a deep, rich blue that is more bottomless than any ocean. The stars are not spots of light but brilliant, magical diamonds that dance like tiny angels. In just this special moment, the sky is somehow alive, and it seems to speak to you silently about the meaning of infinity (无限).
Now look at the painting again. Can you see something of what makes this such a famous and well-loved image? But there's more here than that. Van Gogh painted this while he was quite struck down by a mental disease. It is natural to imagine that he frequently battled the fear that he would never escape his prison to true freedom. It is natural for us to imagine this because each of us has faced our own personal prison, whether it be disease, the loss of a loved one, serious financial problems, ... In such moments it is tempting to give up to despair and collapse in hopelessness.
Looking at this painting, I imagine van Gogh in just such a moment of despair, when he is struck by the memory of one of those amazing night skies. He recalls the sense that he is not alone, that there is a living, infinite world with rich colorful creatures and scenes all around.
And so the sky flows across the canvas full of vitality (活力) and power. The stars don't just sparkle (闪烁); they explode. Looking closer, we notice that the earth itself seems to respond to the movement in the sky, forming its own living waves in the mountains and rolling trees. In the sleepy village, the windows of the houses glow (发光) with the same light that brightens the universe. The giant trees at the left seem to capture the joy by stretching upwards toward the sky.
What a tremendous message of hope there is in this masterpiece! Even if our trouble persist, the world around us assures us that life is worth living. That's what the angels sing about. Doesn't it make you want to sing, too?
1. Looking at the painting Starry Night, we can see all the following except
________.
A. The singing angels. B. The giant trees.
C. The sleepy village. D. The sparkling stars.
2. According to the writer, van Gogh does NOT describe a feeling of _______
through the Starry Night.
A. happiness B. vitality C. power D. despair
3. The underlined word prison in the third paragraph probably means ________.
A. trouble in one's life B. mental illness
C. control from the authority D. a place where criminals are kept
4. What's the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain how van Gogh painted the Starry Night.
B. To tell us how to appreciate the Starry Night.
C. To prove van Gogh was in a hallucinating state of mind while painting the
picture.
D. To show us the beauty of the sky on a starry night.

The best antistress (抗紧张) medicine we have may be right under your nose! Think you know how to do it? Try this simple test: sit or stand wherever you are and take a deep breath, then let it out. What expanded more as you breathed in, your chest or your abdomen (腹部)? If the answer is your chest, you're like most people and you're doing it wrong. Take another deep breath-and keep reading.
The technique is so powerful that physician James Gordon, director of the Centre for Mind/Body Medicine in Washington, teaches it to nearly every patient he sees.
"Slow, deep breathing is probably the only best antistress medicine we have," says Gordon, "When you bring air down into the lower part of the lungs, where oxygen exchange is most efficient, everything changes. Heart rate slows, blood pressure decrease, muscles relax, anxiety(焦虑) ceases and the mind calms."
Obviously, everyone alive knows how to breathe. But Gordon and other experts in the field of mind-body medicine say that few people in industrialized societies know how to breathe correctly. They are taught to suck in their guts (内脏) and puff out (鼓起) their chests. At the same time, they are attacked with constant stress, which causes heart rate to increase. As a result, they become shallow "chest breathers", using primarily the middle and upper portions of the lungs. Few people - other than musicians, singers and some athletes - are even aware that the abdomen should expand when they breathe in.
"Watch a baby breathe," says Gordon, "and you'll see the abdomen go up and down, deep and slow." With age, most people change from this healthy abdominal breathing into shallow chest breathing.
At Duke University Medical Centre, Dr. Jon Seskevich has taught abdominal breathing to most of the 18,000 patients he's worked with since 1990. About half the people he sees have cancer.
One of his most dramatic cases involved a lung-cancer patient. "I walked into the room to find this large man actually fighting for breath," Seskevich recalls. "I had his sit back in hi
