Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence (肠胃气胀) contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who produce large quantities of the harmful gas. While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack, pushing out carbon dioxide, farm animals’ passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries. “Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia are from enteric methane from cattle and sheep,” said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the greensland state government. “And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they are actually up around 50 percent,” he said. Researchers say the bacteria also make the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers. But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep. Another group of scientists, meanwhile, have suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos. And about 20 percent of health-conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already. It’s low in fat, it’s got high protein levels and it is very clean in the sense that basically it is free-range(放养的) animal,” said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales’ institute of environmental studies. 1、Scientists intend to put bacteria into cattle and sheep ________. The departure is likely the result of Tesla’s moving into the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he said in 2017 would be the “best in the world” and would even be able to “predict your destination.” Musk will continue to “donate and advise the organization,” Open AI said in a blog post on Feb. 20, adding that “As Tesla continues to become more focused on AI, this will avoid a potential future conflict for Elon.” Musk and Y Combiner CEO Sam Altman co-founded the nonprofit enterprise in December 2015, its mission is to develop safe artificial general intelligence and ensure those developments are made public. Open AI researchers published a paper on the site arXiv. org, detailing the possible secure threats that come with “malicious” A I. In fact, Musk has heard of the “evil AI” alarm several times. On Aug. 11, 2017, he warned that artificial intelligence poses a bigger threat to humanity, and he told a gathering of state governors that the government needs to regulate AI before robots start “killing people.” Musk’s departure from the Open AI board could mean big things for Tesla. As Elon Goodbye, a financial reporter, noted on Futurism, the move “could signal that Tesla is more deeply committed to their own AI projects than we thought.” He added, “Those who have had their ears to any rumors that Tesla is ready to deliver vehicles capable of Level 5 autonomy could take this new Open AI development as a sign that the company is inching closer to that unapproachable goal.” No company has reached that level of autonomy, which means that a driverless car could navigate any road under any conditions and that all the human “driver” would need to do is to input a destination. 1、Why does Elon Musk leave his position? A.To create safer AI. B.To build the powerful Internet. C.To develop social communication. D.To avoid a possible conflict with Tesla. 2、What is the Elon Musk’s attitude towards the AI? A.Ambiguous. B.Negative. C.Supportive. D.Sympathetic. 3、What does the underlined word “malicious” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Advanced. B.Unpopular. C.Poisonous. D.Traditional. 4、What can we infer from Elon Goodbye’ comments? A.Level 5 autonomy is impossible. B.The rumors about Tesla is meaningless. C.He has no confidence in Open AI. D.Level 5 autonomy could set human drivers free. 24.(8分) One night I received a Facebook message from Laura, a former classmate. “Hey Steve,” she said, “I know you’ve always been an animal lover. I’ve just had a baby and I can’t keep my mini pig.” Being fond of animals, I knew I wanted the pig. I just had to figure out how to make it happen. I lived in a two-bedroom single-level house in Georgetwon, Ontario. It’s tough to bring a pig back to the house I share with two dogs, two cats, and my lifelong partner. But I was not letting that pig go. So I told Laura I’d take the animal. When I got home with the pig, I hid her in the bedroom, and began to prepare a dinner for Alisha — her favourite bacon cheeseburgers. It’s better to make her happy before introducing the new member to her. When I led her to the bedroom and showed her the surprise, Alisha stood in the doorway like a statue. It took her a few seconds to know what I had done. She complained about my unreasonable action. She insisted there was no more room in the house. I knew I was wrong, but I hoped I could smooth things over. Soon enough, the lovely pig did the smoothing for me. Never had we felt such joy as she brought to us. We got her a name “Esther”. Esther’s arrival changed our lives. A few weeks later, we decided to stop eating bacon. We figured it was our turn to try to change the world for other animals. A few months later, we moved to a farm where we cared for abandoned animals — so far, six rabbits, six goats, two sheep, one horse, three cows and three chickens. 1、Who does the underlined phrase “my lifelong partner” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Laura. B.Steve. C.Alisha. D.Esther. 2、Why did the author cook Alisha a meal? A.To please her to accept the pig. B.To make an apology to her. C.To celebrate Esther’s arrival. D.To show off his cooking skills. 3、What was Alisha’s reaction the moment she saw Esther? A.She burst into tears. B.She showed interest in her. C.She quarreled with Steve. D.She was frozen for a while. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.A Small Pig Making a Big Difference B.An Abandoned Pig Finding a Warm Home C.A Little Pig Bringing Happiness to a Family D.A Lovely Pig Removing a Couple’s Disagreement 25.(10分)In a study published in the U. S. journal Science, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) and the University of Florida identified the chemical combinations and genetic recipe for better tomato flavor(味道). “In recent years, consumers often complain that the modern tomato is less flavorful than it once was” said co-principal researcher Sanwen Huang. “Our results provide a practical road map for breeding tomato varieties with better flavor.” For the study, a 170-person consumer group was created to evaluate 160 tomatoes representing 101 varieties, based on qualities such as “overall liking” and “flavor degree”. The results pointed to dozens of chemical compounds of interest, and further research using a statistical model discovered 33 flavor compounds connected with consumer liking, such as glucose(葡萄糖). The reason why modern tomatoes don’t taste good anymore is that a total of 13 of these flavor-associated compounds “were significantly reduced in modern varieties,” their paper wrote. Moreover, the researchers found that smaller fruit tended to have greater sugar content, suggesting that “selection for more sizable tomatoes has cost sweetness and flavor”. Based on this knowledge, Huang and Professor Harry Klee of the University of Florida studied the whole genomes of 398 varieties of tomato, identifying about 250 positions of genes on a chromosome(染色体), which controlled tomato flavor. “We’re just fixing what has been damaged over the last half century to push them back to where they we
