In the 1940s, Guangzhou was a beautiful and busy city. But the city was quite different back then. The Pearl River was very clean. There were many boats on it. Some people even lived in the boat. You could see old and low buildings. They called them Qilou. People sold and bought things on the first floor of Qilou. And Aiqun Building was the tallest building in Guangzhou. Most of people went to work on foot. Some people took the boat. At that time, children often helped parents with housework after school. Sometimes we looked after little sisters and brothers, because parents were busy with work. If we were free, we enjoyed stories from the old people under the tree. It was very interesting! The life then was simple and quiet and I miss the life!

Miss Li: Hello, Mr. Zhang. When did you come to Guangzhou?
Mr. Zhang: I came to Guangzhou and worked here in 1981. I was young then.
Miss Li: What was Guangzhou like in the 1980s?
Mr. Zhang: There were a few new buildings, like factories, Guangzhou train station and department stores. The tallest building was the White Swan Hotel.
Miss Li: Was the Pearl River still clean?
Mr. Zhang: No, the Pearl River became dirty. Many people were sad about it.
Miss Li: How did you go to work?
Mr. Zhang: Many people went to work by bike, and I usually walked to work. When I was walking in the street, I saw many buses and motorbikes running in the street. The streets became very busy and crowded.
Miss Li: What did children usually do after school?
Mr. Zhang: Children were really happy back then. They didn’t have much homework. They usually played games after school, like skipping ropes, playing cards and running with hoops.
Miss Li: How about your children? Did they live with you in Guangzhou then?
Mr. Zhang: No, my children lived with their grandparents in my hometown. My wife and I seldom met them, so we missed them very much.
Miss Li: Thank you for what you did for Guangzhou.
Mr. Zhang: I am happy that I made changes for Guangzhou.
