I was playing against a fine opponent. The score was 20 to 17 in her favor. I won the next three points which made the score 20 to 21. I placed my bat on the table and thanked my opponent and began to walk away. She called me back and said we had to continue until one of us won. “Look,” I said, “if we continue, one of two events will take place. Either you or I will win. If you win, I will begin to doubt my skill. If I win, you will be unhappy. Isn’t it better to know that we both played well, that we enjoyed the competition, and that we played to an equal score?” This was a surprising ending for my opponent and for the persons watching this contest. It made sense to me to leave with a tie game, an impasse(僵局):no winner, no loser! So, my friends, here is the problem troubling me. Our present technology makes it possible for nations to destroy other nations. In such a nuclear time there can be no winners, only losers. Under these conditions, the only choice to avoid global destruction is global impasse. This would be a huge “tie game” where no nation wins and no nation loses. An impasse reached through compromise(妥协). This is because compromise becomes the only means of surviving. We can not destroy this beautiful planet by holding on to an old understanding of victory. The only victory is in achieving a satisfying impasse. No one wins, but no one loses, either. 56.Who would feel surprised, if the game ended with a tie? A.The writer’s opponent B.The audience C.The writer D.A and B 57.This passage implies that the writer worries about________. A.some nations may destroy other nations. B.each nation will try to be the most powerful. C.each player will try to be best. D.no man will accept failure. 58.In the write’s opinion, world peace can be gained by_________. A.present technology B.compromise C.the old understanding of victory D.refusing competition 59.What is the best title of the passage? A. Never win in a table tennis game B.Try to make an impasse C. How to play a tie game D.How to understand victory? B Most young, wealthy Americans believe it’s important to pass money on to their kids. They may be disappointed to learn that their parents don’t feel the same way. In an annual survey of the wealth released on Monday by US Trust, a division of Bank of America Corp, three-quarters of wealthy adults age 46 said it’s a priority(优先)to leave money for their kids. But just 55 percent of Baby Boomers—those age 47 to 66 said they share that sentiment(观点). In fact, one of every three survived said they’d rather leave money to charity than to their kids. Their reasoning? Most of those surveyed don’t even talk to their kids about money: just 37percent said they’re fully disclosed their net worth to their children.
