As is shown in the picture, when students have dinner in the school canteen, they throw so much left-over food into the waste collector, which upsets the teachers and workers. This scene reminds me of similar problems around us. It is not uncommon to see things go to waste in schools. Some students do not turn off the lights when they leave the classroom, others leave the water running after using it, and still others throw away their pens, tapes or even notebooks just because they don’t like them. Such behavior will only contribute to students forming bad habits. To avoid wasting food at school, we should first of all realize the significance of saving and be aware of our own misdoings. Then, we need to take action and be careful with the things we eat or use in our daily life. Also, we should persuade others not to waste things. Text 1 M: What are you doing over the weekend, Sara? W: I’m planning to go bowling tonight. Tomorrow I hope to see a movie. What about you? M: Well, I have a lot of work. I’ll see how it goes. Text 2 W: You’re going to set up your own office, aren’t you? M: Yes. Now a growing number of people rely on me for legal advice, I’d rather have an office of my own. Text 3 M: I’m told you’re going to America tomorrow. I’ll see you off at the airport. W: Oh, thanks a lot. My flight takes off at 2:30 p.m. So I’ve got to check in at 12:30 p.m. M: OK. I’ll see you at the airport half an hour before your check-in. Text 4 M: Jane, could you come to my office at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon? I’d like to discuss a few things with you then. W: Of course, Mr. Brown. I’ll be there without fail. Text 5 W: How many rooms are you looking for? M: Oh, four or five. How much is the rent for this apartment? W: 150 a month. M: 150? It isn’t big enough, nor is it near enough to my office. Text 6 W: Excuse me, how can I get to the nearest branch of the National Bank? M: There’s a branch on New Street. Walk up this street and take the second right, and then keep walking until you reach a big statue of a soldier. W: OK. Where do I go then? M: You’ll see the national bank across the street. It’s the tallest building around there. You won’t miss it. W: Got it. Thank you very much. Text 7 M: Mum, shall I put all these old things in the box? W: It’s up to you. If you think it isn’t of much use, you may throw them out. M: OK, but it’s difficult for me. Many of them remind me of my childhood. W: You may keep what has memory for you and what can be used to decorate our new house. M: Ur, Mum, what should I do with these old newspapers? W: You may sell them for some money. That would be your income for today. Text 8 M: Many people have put on a lot of weight over Christmas, and it’s definitely going to be a challenge for them.  W: One tough thing about trying to lose weight in January is that it’s not a friendly month. M: What do you mean by that? W: Well, it’s cold in January, it’s dark outside, it’s windy and it’s rainy. Really miserable months, so how could you possibly be motivated to do anything? And there’s no chance to go out in the sunshine and do a nice run in the parks. A lot people don’t like going to the gym. M: Why not try and do something that suits you? If you love swimming, go swimming, but if you don’t, don’t. Try and find a fitness friend who will go with you and encourage you, that will really help. W: That’s an idea! Text 9 M: The cheap fashion business is booming at the moment. W: Yeah, so it’s not unusual to come back from buying your weekly food with a nice new pair of jeans or shoes that probably doesn’t cost a lot of money. M: Why are cheap fashions suddenly so popular? W: I think consumers these days want to look good and fashionable, but don’t want to spend much money doing so because they have a lot of other priorities for spending their cash on. M: Then do you think we needn’t buy any expensive clothing? W: It depends. If you’re going to buy something that you’ll only wear for two weeks that costs you £10, fine, but if you’re going to buy a handbag or shoes or coat you know you need to spend a bit more money on it because you need it to last. Cheap clothes don’t last. Text 10 An English Club is a place for language learners to use English in a casual situation. Practising your skills in the classroom is important, but it is not like real life. In the classroom, you often focus on one skill and one item (for example: grammar - future tense). After learning the rules your teacher gives you time to practise using the item. You have your papers in front of you and the rules are fresh in your mind. Will you remember how to use your skills next week, or next year? In an English Club, you get a chance to practise many different skills in a situation that is more like real life. Though your English teacher understands your English, your English Club friends will require you to speak more clearly and listen more carefully. Starting an English Club is a great way to make new lasting friendships. It is important to have good friends who learn English as a second language because your confidence will increase if you do. You will feel more comfortable using English around people you trust and have fun with. Don’t limit your friends to the people in your class. You can invite anyone to join your English Club, including friends, family members, fellow students, and people from other schools. If your best friend is joining, why not ask her grandmother to join too? English Club members also work well when members have varying English language abilities. One member may be able to teach you something new, and another may benefit from a skill that you can share. Teaching someone else a grammar point or explaining how to use a new word is one of the best ways to review your skills.
