China's Steel Trap

China's continuing growth is great for anyone feeding the dragon. It is less welcome for those competing with it. Steelmakers are a case in point.
China churned out a record two million metric tons of steel a day in June. To put that in perspective, China produced more steel in one month than North America likely produced in the entire first half of the year.
The data lent some credence to China's bear-defying second-quarter gross-domestic-product growth numbers, also released Wednesday. But headline growth conceals deeper problems. Steel consultant Michelle Applebaum reckons that at current high prices for key ingredients iron ore and metallurgical coal, most Chinese steelmakers are losing money.
China is no stranger to the triumph of growth over profitability. Just a few days ago, Beijing announced new targets for closing obsolete steelmaking capacity. Yet such targets are nothing new and haven't reined in output to date. With the vast majority of China's steel mills state-controlled, economics must compete with employment and social stability issues in decisions to close capacity.
Structural overcapacity isn't just bad for some steelmakers. China's net exports of steel rose 20% in the first half of the year, according to J.P. Morgan Chase. On Wednesday, Taiwan's China Steel cut prices for steel to be delivered in September, reinforcing a downward trend in regional pricing since March. Further afield, Brazilian steel producers such as Gerdau face a combination of excess Chinese production and a strong domestic currency making imports more competitive.
Absent a sustained pullback in Chinese output, pricing power for global steelmakers will be constrained. Combine that with the upward pressure China exerts on raw-materials costs, and there is potential for the vice to tighten on steel margins.
How to Marry Rich in China
Robert Frank
With wealth comes gold-diggers and China now has a bounty of both.
A new school called in Beijing called the Moral Education Center for Women is offering courses in how to snag a billionaire or millionaire. The 30-hours of training, which costs $3,000, teaches them everything from proper make-up application to conversational skills and traditional tea-pouring techniques, according to this Reuters article. They also learn how to read a man's character and status. (China has yet to launch an equal-opportunity school for male gold-diggers.)
The school has attracted 2,800 women.
As one student explained: 'I thought to myself, if I can marry a rich man, at least I won't have any worries.'
The school also serves as match-maker between the gold and diggers. Rich bachelors can pay $4500 for an 'introductory fee' to the students.
The approach is refreshingly direct in a country where many women see the surest path to wealth as being down the wedding aisle. The U.S. doesn't have anything quite like it despite the plethora of VIP match-making services.
Yet the syllabus for the Moral Education Center seems to lack a few essentials for meeting today's global super-rich. To me, the school would do well to add courses in:
Auction-Paddle Skills Anyone who's anyone in China these days is buying wine, art and jewelry at auction. The wives of the rich should be proficient in paddle raising, lowering, waving and seven-figure math.
Mastiff Management. With prized dogs in China fetching more than $1.5 million, today's wealthy wives need to understand how to pamper, maintain and effectively maintain canine values.
Polo Couture. Polo (real polo, not the Ralph Lauren apparel kind) is hot in China, especially as a fashion trend among wealthy wives. Argentina recently reached a trade deal with China that includes the sale of large quantities of female polo boots. Since so few women play polo, the get-ups will clearly become the preferred uniform of the Chinese ladies of leisure.
What other courses would you require at Chinese gold-digger school?
If You Dream About The Boss...

Dana Anderson, a 31-year-old in Farmington, Utah, dreamed that her boss at the department store where she works called her into his office to talk about her performance as a marketing representative. He said she was a great team player but had to get to work on time.
Ms. Anderson climbed onto the boss's desk and did a striptease. He grabbed her and kissed her.
'Whoa,' she thought when she woke up. 'Why him? That was gross.'
Most of us, if we're honest, will admit to having a steamy dream or two about a work colleague. Sometimes, it is someone we really are attracted to when we're awake.
But often our dream date is the loudmouth down the hall, our office adversary, even the scary boss -- in short, someone we avoid even standing near in real life. So why pay attention to dreams like this? Are they trying to tell us something?
With imagery and symbolism, dreams can reveal important insights that we might not consciously notice otherwise, experts say. Dreams are 'a different mode of thought,' says Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist, professor at Harvard Medical School and author of the book 'The Committee of Sleep.' Most of our sex dreams, though, aren't really about sex. Your dream about the nerd in the next cubicle might be a suggestion from your unconscious to adjust your view and learn to work better with this person. Or maybe your co-worker has a trait -- computer skills, a genial personality -- that you would do well do emulate. If your dream lover is the boss, your unconscious might be telling you to take control at work or in some other area of your life.
'Dreams are a conversation with the self,' says Lauri Loewenberg, dream analyst and author of the book 'Dream On It: Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life.' When we sleep, the anxieties, fears and prejudices of the conscious mind fall away, she says. 'We are left with our deepest, most insightful and brutally honest thoughts.' What was my unconscious trying to tell me, years ago, when I dreamed of being on a romantic date with a colleague whom I couldn't stand in real life? The narrative began with us playing footsie under the table at a restaurant. I asked Ms. Loewenberg for help interpreting the dream, mentioning I was unhappy in my job at the time and coveted my colleague's position. She said by bringing attention to my feet, my sleeping mind was telling me I needed to take steps to get the job I wanted. 'Nothing in a dream is random,' she says.
Ms. Anderson had her dream of dancing naked for her (now former) boss after she got a poor job-performance review earlier that day. She says she thinks the dream was telling her to demonstrate that she was a good performer. She remembers thinking in the dream, 'I will show him a progress report.'
The dream even offered her compelling evidence that her new attitude would pay off -- when the boss shed his clothes and the two of them began having sex. In the dream, the office door opened, and the store's human resources director walked in.
Do you know someone who says he doesn't dream? He's mistaken. All mammals experience REM sleep, which is associated with dreaming, and Dr. Barrett and other researchers believe they do dream.
Vickie Jacobson, a 45-year-old computer drafter from Nashville, Tenn., remembers a dream in which she had sex with her boss on a Victorian couch in an old-fashioned parlor. She took it as an expression of her desire to assimilate in the corporate culture at her new job.
'I had come from a company where all you did was work, work, work. And this was a company where it's all about interacting and communicating and taking an interest in one another,' she says. She kept her dream to herself.
Are there ever circumstances where you should tell a colleague that he or she had a starring role in one of your sex dreams? Only if you are attracted to the person and open to exploring a relationship. Otherwise, keep mum.
In a 2007 study of 3,500 dream reports, researchers at the Universite de Montreal determined that we have sex dreams about 8% of the time.
Other studies have shown that both men and women have more negative sexual dreams than positive ones, and men have slightly more negative sexual dreams than women do, says Dr. Barrett.
For men, the anxieties often relate to sexual performance. A common scenario is of having sex when a group of people walk in. Or a sexual partner will morph into something scary, maybe growing scales or fur. Women often dream about fending off unwanted advances, or of being sexually assaulted.
In the medieval Christian church, nuns and priests sometimes reported that demons, called incubi and succubi, had sex with them while they were sleeping, Dr. Barrett says. Some accounts were scary, but others were of pleasant sexual experiences. Scholars believe they are accounts of sexual dreams.
An unwanted advance from an evil spirit in the middle of the night is one thing. But a roll in the hay with the office bore? Now that's a real nightmare. As for the hot new hire, Ms. Lowenberg says, 'Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, as Freud put it. The dream can be an innocent little pressure reliever.'
PATRICK CHOVANEC

Investors are worried about the health of China's banks. They're afraid─with good reason─that the massive, state-directed lending binge that was instrumental in pumping up China's GDP figures the past two and a half years will end up producing an equally massive pile of bad debt. Barely a week goes by without new word of a troubled project or impending default.
Never fear, say the banks and some analysts. They point to the extraordinarily low loan-to-deposit ratios of Chinese banks, averaging around 65%, as evidence that these banks have plenty of cash to cushion themselves against any future loan losses they might suffer. Everything is under control.
This argument is misleading, and offers a false sense of comfort.
First of all, the loan-to-deposit ratio is a measure of liquidity, not of solvency. A high ratio suggests that a bank may be relying too much on volatile short-term borrowing rather than stable long-term customers to fund its lending. It risks getting caught without enough cash reserves on hand to satisfy its creditors, forcing it to sell other a
