Step Ⅰ. Warm-up ( 5 mins )
1. Greetings.
T: Good morning, boys and girls. Nice to see you.
Ss: Nice to see you, too.
2. Talk about the tourist city Ezhou.
T: I’m so glad to have a chance to study in your school, and today it’s my honor to have the class.
This is my first time to stay in Ezhou for a month, when I see this city, I can feel it’s so beautiful and lively. On my way to your school, I have seen the sign of China excellent tourist city, a horse stepping on a flying swallow. So I decide, before I leave this city, I will visit the tourist attractions. Can you tell me the tourist attractions in your city?
Ss: Yes. You can visit West mountain, Lian Zi Lake...
T:Are you willing to be my tour guide?
Ss: Yes.
T: Thank you. You are so kind and lovely. You’re volunteers.
T: Do you know the meaning of ‘volunteer’?
Ss: Yes./No.
T: I’ll tell you the meaning of ‘volunteer’, you are willing to offer sb help without expecting reward. Are your clear?

3. Lead the topic how to offer help to others.
T: Let’s guess a person who always helped others in our memory, there is a song to sing him and remember his spirit. Who is he?
Ss: Leifeng.
T:You’re so clever. We need to develop the spirit of Leifeng. So can you talk about the things you offer help to others.
S1:I gave my seats to old people on the bus.
S2:I help a blind people cross the road.

Step Ⅱla ( 5 mins)
This activity is to learn how to use phrasal verbs and target language to offer help.
T: All of us did the good things to help others. OK, today we will learn how to offer help as a volunteer. Now, Let’s look at the three posters of 1a. What can you see in the first poster.
S1: A boy and a girl are helping clean up the city parks.
T: Good answer. There is trash in the park. There are papers on the ground. We can help clean up the park by picking up papers and trash. We can make the park clean.
T: What about the second picture?
S2:He is visiting sick children in the hospital.
T: OK. Good. How about the last one?
S3:A man is helping stop hunger.
T: What would you like to do if you want to be a volunteer?
S1: I’d like to work outside. I can help clean up the city parks.

T: Now, please come up with other ideas to help others, and list them on the textbook.
(ask some students to share their ideas with the class. Write any new words or phrases on the board and explain these words to the class, if necessary.)

Step Ⅲ1b (10 mins)
This activity gives students practice in understanding the target language in spoken conversation.
T: Let’s do some listening, listen carefully.Complete the sentences in 1b
(check the answers ,read the sentences together).
T: Let’s look at the first line.there is a phrasal verb “clean up”. "clean up means make a place clean and tidy, put things there in order". Let’s see another example, We should always clean up after a picnic. Who can explain this sentence in your own words?
Ask one student to explain the sentence.
He or she may say like this. This sentences means we should burn wastepaper, collect litter and empty bottles, etc.
Then say to the class. Who can make more sentences with clean up?
Ask several students to share their sentences to the class.
Do the same with the other phrasal verbs.
Some sample sentences (Let Ss to explain the phrasal verbs in their own words).
1. clean up—make a place clean and tidy, put things in order
We should always clean up the dirty parts of the sea.
2. cheer up—make someone feel happy
The good news cheers everyone up.
3. give out—hand out, distribute
Lin Tao helped the teacher give out the new textbooks to the class.
4. homeless—people have nowhere to live, and who often live on the streets.
It’s an adjective word. Can you think more words have the suffix with “less”.
Samples: care-careless, hope-hopeless, help-helpless, use-useless
5. Volunteer. V.—It means a person who offers to help others, usually something that other people do not want to do
Volunteer is used as a verb here.
Step Ⅳ1c ( 4 mins )
This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language.
Read the instructions with the class.
Call their attention to the example in the speech bubbles in Activity la. Ask a pair of students to read this conversation to a class. Then let them practice in pairs.
After they’ve finished practicing the sample conversation, ask them to make up similar conversations based on the other two posters. Get two pairs to demonstrate two conversations first. They may say like this:
SA: I’d like to cheer up sick kids.
SB: You could visit sick children in the hospital.
SA: I’d like to help homeless people.
SB: You could give out food at a food bank.
Then let the whole class practice in pairs.
Ask them to practice similar conversations using the information in Activity 1b.
Step Ⅴ 2a&2b ( 15 mins)
T:Look,a group of students are planning a City Parks Clean-up Day.How to get everyone know the day or do something useful on that day?Can you help them come up with some good ideas?
S1:They should advertise on TV or in a newspaper.It’s fast and popular.
S2:They can put up some signs in parks or nearby neighborhood.
S3:They should call up some good friends.The more,the better.
S4:They could hand out some ads on the street or near the supermarket.there are many people there.It’s very convenient.
