U4 L4 Language points
1. It has a population of just under a million people and is located on North Island.
1) have /has a population of… “拥有…人口”
e.g.这个城市的人口超过一百万.
This city has a population of more than one million.
population单独作主语,谓语动词用单数,若说 population的几分之几或百分之几,或强调这一整体人口中的成员或成分时,谓语动词用复数.
不用many, much及其比较级修饰population,可用 large, small, big修饰
e.g. The population in China is large, and eighty percent of the population in China are farmers.
询问某个地方的人口有多少时,不用How many
/much 提问,而要用What is the population of…?
e.g. 这个城市的人口是多少?
--What is the population of this city?
--It has a population of …
/ The population of … is …
2) be located on/in/at+地点 “位于…”
e.g. 我们村坐落在一座山的山脚下.
Our village is located at foot of a mountain.
这所学校位于城市的中心.
The school is located in the center of the city.
我国位于太平洋西岸.
Our country is located on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean.
* locate:
1) discover the exact position or place of sb./ sth.
e.g. locate a town on a map
2) (esp. passive) establish sth. in a place
e.g. A new factory is going to be located in the city center.
* location
[C] place or position
e.g. a suitable location for new houses
[U] finding the position of sb./ sth.
e.g. The general was responsible for the location of the missing yacht.
2. The history of the city goes back 650 years when the Maoris settled in the area. European settlement began in 1840 when the British arrived.

3) He never goes back on his word.
4) She decided to go back to teaching.
5) His family goes back to the time of Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ.
b) settle 定居,安家落户
e.g. After years of travel, we decided to settle in Canada.
*settle down 安顿,安心;过着宁静的生活;舒适地坐或躺
e.g. She settled down in an armchair to read a book.
When are you going to marry and settle down?
After all the recent excitement things have begun to settle down again.
*settle down to 开始注意某物
e.g. The constant interruptions stopped me settling down to my work.
c) when 用作关系副词,引导定语从句修饰时间名词所作的先行词,when在定语从句中作时间状语.
e.g. 他永远不会忘记结婚的那一天.
He will never forget the day when he got married.
=He will never forget the day on which he got married.
3. In 1985, the New Zealand government, made the whole country a nuclear-free zone.
make后的 the whole country是宾语, a nuclear-free zone是宾语补足语,可以由名词、形容词、介词短语、过去分词等.
e.g.我们都选他作我们的班长.
We all made him our monitor.
make + sth +n. /adj./过去分词/介词短语
make: causing to become, do or appear
1) The news made her ________ (高兴).
2) Can you make yourself ___________ in English?
3) Her jokes made us all _________ (笑).
4) The conference made him ___________(发言人).
5) We were asked to make ourselves ___________ (在家) on the weekend.
4. Famous sights include Mt. Eden, one of many large volcanic hills, as well as the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
as well as: in addition to sth. else “又,也,还”
e.g. 她既漂亮又聪明.
She’s clever as well as beautiful.
She’s not only beautiful but also clever.
除了汤姆外还有很多学生是我的朋友.
Many students as well as Tom are my friends.
Not only Tom but also many students are my friends.
* as well as连接两个主语时,重点在前面,谓语动词的形式应根据前一个主语确定;not only… but also连接两个主语时,重点在后面,谓语动词的形式由后一个主语确定.
e.g. 不但你而且我也急着知道真相.
Not only you but also I am anxious to know the truth.
= I as well as you am anxious to know the truth.
as well 多用于句末,除此以外还有别的
too 多用于句末,也可紧接在主语后
also 用在肯定句,不用于句末,通常与动词连用,助动词之后,行为动词之前.
e.g.她不但数学好,英语也好.
She is good at maths, and she is good at English as well.
She is good at maths, and she is good at English, too.
She is good at maths. She is also good at English.
我也知道怎样解这道数学题.
I, too, know how to work out the maths problem.
I also know how to work out the maths problem.
I know how to work out the maths problem as well.
as well (as sb/ sth)除…之外,也,还,而且
Ex. too, as well, as well as, either
1) Are they coming ___________?
2) He grows flowers. He grows vegetables, ____________.
3) I don’t know where she has gone, I don’t care, ____________.
4) She is a talented musician ______________ being a photographer.
5. be known for = be famous for “因…而出名”
be know as = be famous as “作为…而出名”
Ex.
China is famous/known _____ the Great Wall.
He was well known ___ a good actor.
