Iknowthatformanyofyou,today isthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayinane
3、wschool,soitsunderstandableifyourealittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow-withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucouldvestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,m
4、yfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.Butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddo
5、itwasat4:30inthemorning.Now,asyoumightimagine,Iwasnttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Andalotoftimes,Idfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.ButwheneverIdcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshedsay,Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster. SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool
6、.ButImheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.ImherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhatsexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.Now,Ivegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndIvetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.Ivetalkedaboutteachersresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushing
7、youtolearn.Ivetalkedaboutyourparentsresponsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andyougetyourhomeworkdone,anddontspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox.Ivetalkedalotaboutyourgovernmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarentwor
8、king,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld-andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupaya
9、ttentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontoday:theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation.Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.Everysingl
10、eoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter-maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper-butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishpaper-thatEnglishclasspaperthatsassignedtoyou.Ma
11、ybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor-maybeevengoodenoughtocomeupwiththenextiPhoneorthenewmedicineorvaccine-butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.MaybeyoucouldbeamayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice-butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.Andnomatter
12、whatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyoullneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?Youregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.Youvegottotra
13、inforitandworkforitandlearnforit.Andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.Whatyourelearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.Youlln
14、eedtheknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDS,andtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenvironment.Youllneedtheinsightsandcritical-thinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournation
15、morefairandmorefree.Youllneedthecreativityandingenuityyoudevelopinallyourclassestobuildnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureconomy.Weneedeverysingleoneofyoutodevelopyourtalentsandyourskillsandyourintellectsoyoucanhelpusoldfolkssolveourmostdifficultproblems.Ifyoudontdothat-ifyouquitonschool-y

17、ledattimestopaythebillsandwasntalwaysabletogiveusthethingsthatotherkidshad.ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavingafatherinmylife.ThereweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandIfeltlikeIdidntfitin.SoIwasntalwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeenonschool,andIdidsomethingsImnotproudof,andIgotinmoretroublethanIshouldhave.Andmylifeco
18、uldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.ButIwas-Iwaslucky.Igotalotofsecondchances,andIhadtheopportunitytogotocollegeandlawschoolandfollowmydreams.Mywife,ourFirstLadyMichelleObama,shehasasimilarstory.Neitherofherparentshadgonetocollege,andtheydidnthavealotofmoney.Buttheyworkedhard,andsheworkedhard,sothats
19、hecouldgotothebestschoolsinthiscountry.Someofyoumightnothavethoseadvantages.Maybeyoudonthaveadultsinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyouneed.Maybesomeoneinyourfamilyhaslosttheirjobandtheresnotenoughmoneytogoaround.Maybeyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudontfeelsafe,orhavefriendswhoarepressuringyoutodothi
20、ngsyouknowarentright.Butattheendoftheday,thecircumstancesofyourlife-whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyyouhave,whatyouvegotgoingonathome-noneofthatisanexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitudeinschool.Thatsnoexcusefortalkingbacktoyourteacher,orcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofschool.T
