Blind Dad Watched Me Play Football
盲爸爸看我橄榄球比赛

  Bob Richard, the former pole-vault champion, shares a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship. Even though his son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game.
  This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him, but also make it very clear that he did not have to play football if he didn’t want to.
  But the young man loved football and decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice or a game, but remained a bench warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him.
  When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a walk-on. Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him on the roster because he always put his heart and soul into every practice, and at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit.
  The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game.
  It was the end of the senior football season, and as he trotted on to the practice field shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram and he became deathly silent.
  Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?”
  The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come to the game on Saturday.”
  Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon.
  “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man.
  The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in.
  Before long, the coach, the players, and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before was doing everything right. The score was soon tied. Finally, the young man’s team won the game!
  The coach asked how he did it. He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you know my father died, but did you know that my father was blind?” the young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “today was the first time he could see my play, and I wanted to show him that I could do it!”

Don’t Wait Till the Flowers Wilt
莫等到花儿都谢了

  Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches along the highway I travel daily to work.
  There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I’ve noticed that it blooms only in morning hours, for the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.
  This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I’ve often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers.
  Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, “I’ll stop on my way home and dig them.” “Gee, I don’t want to get my good clothes dirty…” Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel one year for my trunk to be used for that expressed purpose.
  One day on my way home from work, I was saddened to see that the highway department had mowed the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them blooming this spring.”
  A week ago we were shocked and saddened to learn that my oldest sister-in-law had a terminal brain tumor. She is 20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because of age and distance, we haven’t been close as we all would have liked.
  I couldn’t help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband’s sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.
  And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I’ll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.

  Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
  One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her. “Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while. “What?” she replied, still doing her work. “Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
